The model does not operate a website on its own. For webpage-only work, use page-aware browser automation when possible; use screenshot-driven computer use when the workflow needs a visual interface, legacy software, or several desktop applications.
What “computer use” means in a browser automation system
A computer-use model is one component in an application you control. The integrating application supplies the browser or desktop session, gathers observations, executes approved actions, and decides when the run must stop. A typical observation is a screenshot, but it can also include page state, element references, accessibility information, or results from ordinary browser tools.
The model proposes an action such as clicking, typing, scrolling, opening a tab, or navigating to a URL. That proposal is not authorization. Your action handler must validate it, enforce the task’s boundaries, execute it, and return a fresh observation. This separation is the foundation for safety, auditing, cancellation, and reliable recovery.
Choose the right interaction layer
Use the narrowest interface that can complete the job. A page-aware tool is usually more direct for work that stays inside webpages; screenshot-driven control is broader but adds visual interpretation and observation overhead.

Prefer page-aware automation for ordinary websites
When the task is “read these pages, fill this form and submit it,” expose page contents, element references and browser actions. The agent can target a known element instead of guessing a coordinate from pixels. Screenshots remain useful for visual confirmation or unusual controls.
Use computer use for a genuinely visual or cross-application workflow
Computer use is appropriate when the task crosses a browser and a desktop application, depends on a canvas or visual layout, or must operate software that has no usable API. The trade-off is more state capture, more opportunities for coordinate errors and usually higher latency.
Use a direct API or deterministic function whenever it covers the operation
If a service exposes an API for creating an invoice, downloading a report or changing a setting, call that API directly and reserve visual control for the portion that truly requires the interface. This reduces ambiguity and makes verification easier.
The application-controlled loop
- Define a narrow task. State the intended result, permitted domains, allowed actions and explicit stop conditions. Do not give the session unrelated accounts or sites.
- Start a controlled runtime. Use a dedicated browser profile in an isolated VM, container or similarly restricted environment. Keep the session alive across model calls when cookies and navigation continuity are required.
- Send the task and current observation. Depending on the integration, provide a screenshot, page state, element references or tool results.
- Validate and execute the proposed action. Your application-side handler decides whether the action is allowed, then uses browser or desktop automation to carry it out. Google’s documented browser pattern uses Playwright as the client-side action handler.
- Capture the new state. Take another screenshot or page observation after execution and send it to the model. Continue until the model reports completion, requests human input or a policy limit is reached.
- Confirm and verify. Pause before purchases, sensitive submissions, destructive changes or meaningful consent. Inspect the actual resulting page or application state; a model’s statement that it succeeded is not proof.
Keep an audit record of the task, approved actions, observations, policy decisions, confirmation events and final verification. Apply your privacy policy to screenshots because they may contain credentials, personal information or confidential documents.
A bounded Playwright runtime you can run locally
The following Python example demonstrates the application side of the loop. The action list stands in for actions returned by a model; in production, replace that list with your model adapter, while keeping the validation and execution functions under your control.

browser.close()Install the dependency with pip install playwright and then playwright install chromium. For a real agent, constrain selectors, form fields, domains and action types in the policy layer rather than allowing arbitrary code from the model.

Safety controls that should be present before the first real run
Isolation and least privilege
- Use a disposable browser profile or VM with only the files, credentials and network routes the task needs.
- Allowlist domains and, where practical, specific paths or API endpoints.
- Use separate accounts with the minimum permissions required; never expose an administrator session for a routine task.
Untrusted page content
Text in a page, document or image can contain instructions designed to redirect the agent. Treat it as data, not as permission. It cannot replace the user’s task or expand the allowlist. This remains true even when an automated classifier flags suspicious content.
Human confirmation for consequential actions
Require an explicit confirmation immediately before purchases, transmission of sensitive data, destructive changes, account recovery, legal acceptance or other difficult-to-reverse actions. Typing sensitive data can itself transmit it, so confirmation belongs before the typing step when appropriate.
Limits, cancellation and handoff
Set maximum steps, wall-clock time, navigation count and (where relevant) spending. Provide a cancel button and a way to hand the task to a person. Stop when the agent reaches an unapproved domain, encounters an unexpected login or asks for an action outside its scope.
Independent completion checks
Verify a receipt number, changed status, downloaded file or other observable outcome in the application state. Save only the evidence needed for audit and protect stored screenshots and input data.
Reliability, latency and cost expectations
Expect pages to change, clicks to miss, sessions to expire and sites to restrict automation. Screenshot-driven runs generally need a new observation after action batches, so they can be slower than page-aware calls. Reduce unnecessary cycles by waiting for a specific selector or network-idle condition, grouping safe actions and using deterministic APIs for routine operations.
Benchmark numbers are setup-specific, not promises for your workflow. OpenAI reported 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena and 87.0% on WebVoyager for its Computer-Using Agent in a 2025 announcement. The same announcement described WebVoyager tasks as relatively simple and said more improvement was needed on complex WebArena tasks. Treat these as vendor-reported results for the named model, benchmark and setup rather than industry averages.

Google labels its Gemini computer-use capability as a preview and warns that it may contain errors and security vulnerabilities; close supervision is appropriate for important work. Tool names and compatibility change, so check the current documentation for the provider you select before deploying.
Deployment paths and tools
- Custom runtime: combine a model API with Playwright or another automation library. You own isolation, policy checks, retries, logging and credentials.
- OpenAI Computer Use API: integrate the model with an application-run browser or desktop environment. The documented integration patterns include Playwright for JavaScript and PyAutoGUI examples for Python and Ruby, plus structured computer actions.
- Anthropic computer-use tool: provides screenshot, mouse and keyboard control through a client toolset; support and version identifiers are provider-dependent.
- Anthropic browser-use tool: exposes browser-specific operations for work that remains in webpages, without requiring a full desktop environment.
- Google Gemini Computer Use: documents an application-side screenshot/action loop and a Playwright browser example, with preview-status and supervision warnings.
- Browser Use: documents a hosted cloud browser and agent path, a CLI for connecting an existing agent to a browser, and a Python library for locally run agents using local or cloud browsers.
Compare supported models, page-state access, runtime control, data handling, latency, cost and the security boundary. No single deployment path is best for every site.
Common failures and fixes
The agent clicks the wrong control
Prefer element references or stable selectors for page-aware tasks. If visual control is required, take a fresh screenshot after navigation or layout changes, reduce the action batch and require a state check before continuing.
A page contains an instruction that conflicts with the task
Stop treating the page text as authoritative. Keep the original task and policy in the controlling application, quarantine the content, and request human review if the conflict affects an account, payment or sensitive data.

The session reaches a login, CAPTCHA or unexpected domain
Stop rather than attempting to bypass the control. Confirm that the domain is allowlisted, provide a supervised handoff for legitimate authentication, or end the run.
The model reports success but nothing changed
Inspect the resulting page, URL, status text, downloaded artifact or server-side record. If the expected state is absent, mark the run incomplete and retry only within the action and time limits.

The run loops or becomes slow
Set a hard action and time budget, wait on explicit readiness signals, avoid repeated full-page screenshots and use direct APIs for deterministic operations. Preserve the last valid observation for debugging.
The browser crashes or the page times out
Capture the error and final screenshot, close the context, and retry in a fresh isolated session. Do not automatically repeat a consequential action unless you can establish whether the first attempt already took effect.
