Capture a website using Astral’s documented flow
The steps below describe what Astral’s JSR example does. Consult its current package page for the exact runnable syntax and setup: the available documentation details establish the sequence but do not provide enough verified API calls here to reproduce a complete script safely.
- Import the package. The documented example imports
launchfromjsr:@astral/astral. Check current JSR and Astral setup instructions for the package import and any required browser installation. - Launch a browser. Create the browser using the package’s documented launch method. Browser binaries, operating-system dependencies, and any remote-browser configuration depend on the selected setup.
- Open a page and navigate to the target. Use the package’s current page and navigation API to load the full target URL, including its scheme, such as
https://example.com. - Capture screenshot bytes. Call the documented
page.screenshot()method. The package example obtains bytes rather than specifying a file path. - Write the image. Save the returned bytes with
Deno.writeFileSync("screenshot.png", screenshot). The output path is relative to the process’s working directory unless you choose an absolute path. - Close resources. Close the page and browser when finished. Astral’s example uses
await usingand says cleanup is performed automatically; follow the current package guidance for its resource-management pattern.
The example’s output is a PNG file named screenshot.png. Do not assume the package supports full-page capture, JPEG or WebP encoding, clipping, or other options unless its current documentation confirms them.
Grant only the Deno permissions the setup needs
Deno denies most system I/O by default. A screenshot script may need permission to reach the target website, write the image, import a package, or launch and access browser processes. The precise set depends on the package, browser installation, and whether the browser runs locally or remotely; do not grant every permission just to make an error disappear.
Scope network and file access
Deno’s permission system supports restricting network permission to hostnames and ports, and filesystem permission to paths. For example, a narrowly scoped command might conceptually grant network access to the target host and write access to a specific output directory. The exact flags you need depend on the script and package; verify them against Deno’s current permission reference rather than treating a broad permission set as a standard requirement.
Put runtime flags before the script name
Deno’s run guide notes that permission flags go before the script filename. If you put a runtime flag after the filename, Deno passes it to the script as an argument instead of applying it as a permission. This is a common reason a script still reports a permission error after a flag appears in the command.
Choose viewport, full-page, and output behavior
For a viewport screenshot, capture the currently visible page. A full-page image instead attempts to include content beyond the viewport. The distinction matters for long pages: full-page output can be much taller, and content that loads only as you scroll may need additional handling.
Playwright’s documentation illustrates screenshot options including full-page capture, clipping, PNG/JPEG/WebP output, CSS-pixel versus device-pixel scaling, masking, animation handling, and returning bytes versus saving to a path. Troubleshoot common screenshot failures
Deno reports a permission error
Identify the denied operation in the error message. It may be network access, output-file writing, package access, or browser process access. Add only the permission needed for that operation, scoped to the relevant host or path where possible. Also confirm that permission flags appear before the script name.
The browser will not launch
A browser binary or required operating-system dependency may be missing, or the launch configuration may not match the environment. Consult Astral’s current browser setup guidance and confirm whether it expects a local browser, a separately installed binary, or a remote endpoint. The package example alone does not establish a universal installation procedure.
The output file is missing or empty
Check that the screenshot operation completed before writing, that the returned value is the byte data expected by Deno’s file API, and that the process has permission to write to the chosen path. Confirm the working directory if the script writes to a relative filename.
The capture is blank or incomplete
Make sure navigation reached the intended URL and the page had time to render before capture. Dynamic sites can populate content after the initial document load. Use a wait mechanism only if the selected library documents one; do not assume a Playwright option exists in Astral. Some pages may also show consent flows, authentication screens, or bot checks instead of the content you expected.

Images differ between runs or machines
Control browser and operating-system versions, viewport, device scale, fonts, settings, and headless mode where possible. Playwright notes that rendering varies with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. If the selected Deno package does not expose controls for a variable, record the environment and treat small rendering differences cautiously.

Local execution is suitable when the browser and dependencies are available on the developer’s machine. CI and server environments need the same decisions made explicit: where the browser comes from, which system dependencies it needs, what network destinations are allowed, where files are written, and how the process cleans up browser resources. Do not assume a browser installed on a laptop is also present in a container or hosted runner.
Astral’s documentation indicates that an existing remote browser or browser-service endpoint can be used. That can move browser installation and execution out of the Deno process, but it adds a network endpoint and its access requirements. Choose local or remote execution based on the environment and its operational constraints; the available documentation does not establish a particular provider or performance advantage.
