For a cluttered article, try Reader Mode. If you need automation, choose between reading the live page’s rendered DOM and fetching its original HTML—the right method depends on whether the text is visible, dynamically added, or embedded in an image.
Choose the right extraction method
| Method | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Select and copy | A passage you can see on one page | Manual; you select the text yourself |
| Reader Mode | Reading the central text of an article without page clutter | Works only when the browser recognizes the page as an article |
| Rendered DOM | Code running in a page that is already loaded | Requires a suitable element selector; dynamic content may change later |
| Fetch and parse | Repeatable extraction when the text is present in the response HTML | May miss content added by JavaScript after the response arrives |
| Image text recognition | Words contained in a screenshot, scan, or other image | Ordinary HTML extraction cannot read text that exists only as pixels |
Copy visible text from a webpage
For a one-time copy, open the page, select the passage, and use the browser or operating system’s copy command. This is usually the most dependable option when you need a specific visible excerpt: you can see what you selected and avoid collecting navigation, footers, or unrelated page content.
If the page is a long article surrounded by ads and site furniture, try the browser’s Reader Mode. MDN describes Reader Mode as a way to hide elements such as sidebars, footers, and ads and adjust text size, contrast, and layout. It is intended for article-like pages, so it may be unavailable when the browser cannot identify a main article. MDN’s Reader Mode documentation explains the feature and its eligibility limits.
Extract text from a page already open in a browser
When your code can run in the loaded page—for example, in the developer console or in your own browser-based application—select the element that contains the content and read its innerText:

const text = document.querySelector("article")?.innerText ?? "";
console.log(text);
Replace article with a selector that matches the site’s content container. A narrower selector usually avoids collecting menus, page headers, and footers that would be included by selecting the whole document.
innerText represents rendered text and approximates what a person could select and copy. By contrast, textContent reads text from the DOM without accounting for rendered appearance in the same way. That difference matters when you want user-visible text rather than all text nodes, including ones that are hidden or formatted differently. See MDN’s innerText reference and textContent reference.
Make the selector resilient
- Start with a semantic container such as
articleif the page uses one. - If that returns nothing, inspect the page’s markup and choose a selector for the actual article or main-content element.
- Check the result before saving or processing it. An empty string can mean the selector did not match, or the content has not appeared yet.
- If the page fills its content after load, wait for that content before reading the element. A snapshot taken too early may omit it.
Fetch a page and parse its HTML
Use Fetch when the text you need is in the server’s HTML response and you want a repeatable request-and-parse workflow. Check the HTTP status explicitly: a response such as 404 does not, by itself, make fetch() reject. Then read the response body as text and parse the returned markup into a separate document.

async function extractArticleText(url) {
const response = await fetch(url);
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`HTTP ${response.status} ${response.statusText}`);
}
const html = await response.text();
const doc = new DOMParser().parseFromString(html, "text/html");
const article = doc.querySelector("article");
if (!article) {
throw new Error("No article element found; choose a selector for this site.");
}
return article.textContent?.trim() ?? "";
}
extractArticleText("https://example.com/article")
.then(console.log)
.catch(console.error);
Change the example URL and selector for your use case. Response.text() reads the response body as text; DOMParser parses the markup into a separate document. The code uses textContent on that parsed document, so it gathers text nodes without reproducing the browser’s rendered-text behavior. Use a live, rendered page and innerText instead when visibility and layout affect what you want. References: MDN Using Fetch and MDN DOMParser.parseFromString.

Know what the response does—and does not—contain
A fetched response is not necessarily the same as the page a person sees after it finishes loading. Page JavaScript may add or change DOM content later, so a request-and-parse workflow can miss text that appears only after scripts run. If the response lacks the text, inspect the rendered page or use a browser-based approach that runs the site and reads its live DOM. MDN’s explanation of browser page processing covers how JavaScript participates in building a page.
Also account for access restrictions and site rules. A programmatic request can receive an error page or other response instead of the content you expected. Check the response status and the parsed result rather than treating every response body as article text.

Handle parsed markup safely
DOMParser creates an in-memory document. Do not take markup from an untrusted source and insert its nodes into your live page without considering security: parsing and displaying untrusted content can create risks. For text extraction, read the parsed document’s text rather than inserting its HTML into the active page.
Read text from the clipboard with permission
Clipboard access is useful when a user has copied text and explicitly asks your application to read it. It is not a dependable way to extract text from a webpage automatically: the user must first copy the material, and browser security controls can deny access.

async function readClipboardText() {
try {
return await navigator.clipboard.readText();
} catch (error) {
console.error("Clipboard text could not be read:", error);
throw error;
}
}
Clipboard reads require a secure context and may require permission; readText() can fail with a permission error. Richer clipboard formats accessed through read() have additional browser and policy constraints. Build a clear user action and explain why access is needed instead of promising that clipboard reads will always work. See MDN Clipboard.readText() and MDN Clipboard.read().

Extract words embedded in an image
If the words are part of a screenshot, scan, or other image rather than HTML text, selecting DOM elements or parsing the page will not recover them. You need text recognition (OCR) that reads the lettering from the image.
Mozilla’s Firefox support documentation describes a “Copy Text from Image” feature for supported macOS configurations. That documentation is specific to its stated platform scope; do not assume the option is available on every operating system or Firefox setup. See Firefox: Copy Text from Image.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Automate screenshots when the source is visual
If the material you need is in a webpage screenshot rather than selectable HTML, capture the page first and then apply an image-text recognition workflow. For browser-based text extraction, use the live DOM or fetched HTML methods above; a screenshot alone does not turn image lettering into DOM text.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Its clean-shot options can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be switched off. The response identifies page verdict and billing status, and bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
Or skip the browser setup
Make a GET request with the page URL. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and setup. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
Troubleshoot missing or unexpected text
- Your selector returns an empty result: The selector may not match the site’s markup, or the page content may not have loaded. Inspect the page, adjust the selector, and wait for the relevant content before reading it.
- Fetch returns an error page or unexpected text: Check
response.okand the status code before parsing. The response body can contain an error page rather than the requested article. - Fetched text omits content visible in the browser: The site may add or change that content with JavaScript after the original response. Read from the rendered page after it loads.
- Extracted text includes irrelevant page furniture: Select the article or main content container instead of the entire document, and use Reader Mode for eligible article pages when working manually.
- Clipboard reading fails: Check that the page is in a secure context and handle denied permission. Ask the user to copy the text through an explicit action rather than assuming access.
- No text is found in the page markup: If the lettering is part of an image, use image text recognition rather than DOM extraction.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use innerText or textContent?
Use innerText when you want rendered text similar to what a user can select and copy. Use textContent when you want text nodes without the same awareness of rendered appearance.
Does Fetch run a website’s JavaScript?
A basic Fetch request reads the response body; it does not give you the browser’s later, JavaScript-modified DOM. Use a loaded-page approach when the desired text is added after the response arrives.
Can Reader Mode extract text from any webpage?
No. It is designed for article-like pages, and a browser may not offer it when it cannot identify an article.
