Devin Desktop is Cognition’s renamed Windsurf desktop environment for working with AI software-development agents. It combines a full interactive IDE with an Agent Command Center, Spaces, Kanban view and tools for dispatching, monitoring and reviewing multiple agents. You still decide what to build, inspect the generated changes, run tests and approve what ships.
The name change is important: Cognition’s official FAQ says an over-the-air update carries Windsurf plans, pricing, extensions, settings, workflows and in-progress work forward. Only the name and branding change. Windsurf for JetBrains remains available.
What Devin Desktop is
Devin Desktop is positioned as a command center for agent-assisted development while retaining the Windsurf IDE foundation. The vendor describes an environment with syntax highlighting, autocomplete and debugging tools, plus agent-management features for planning and supervising work.
A typical workflow is:
- Describe a feature, bug, investigation or refactor.
- Assign the work to an agent or split it among several agents.
- Let agents inspect the repository, write code and investigate edge cases.
- Review diffs, run tests and debug failures in the IDE.
- Merge only changes that meet your project’s review and release requirements.

How the desktop workflow is organized
Agent Command Center
The command center is the management layer for assigning and observing agent work. It is useful when a task involves several investigations, independent changes or a queue of issues rather than one conversation in an editor pane.
Spaces
Spaces provide a way to organize related work. A team can group a project, repository, issue stream or longer-running initiative so that context is easier to find than in a flat list of chats.
Kanban view
The Kanban view presents agent tasks by status. Treat it as an operational board: clarify ownership, identify blocked work and move completed tasks into human review rather than assuming that “done” means production-ready.
Interactive IDE
The IDE retains the conventional developer loop: navigate files, edit manually, use syntax highlighting and autocomplete, attach debuggers and inspect diffs. This matters when an agent’s implementation is directionally correct but needs architectural, security or performance changes.

Feature work and bug fixes
Give an agent a precise issue, acceptance criteria, relevant files and commands for validation. For a bug, include a reproduction and expected behavior. Ask the agent to explain its diagnosis before accepting a broad change.
Tests and maintenance
Agents can help add tests, update fixtures, investigate failures and perform repetitive maintenance. Keep test execution in your normal environment and inspect whether new tests actually exercise the failure mode rather than merely increasing line count.

Refactors and migrations
Large changes benefit from splitting work into bounded tasks: inventory affected code, make one compatible change, run the test suite, then migrate callers. Independent agents can investigate separate modules, but conflicting edits still require a human integration pass.
Documentation and scheduled chores
The broader Devin product family is presented for documentation, issue triage, performance work, migrations, scheduled chores and automation. These are Devin-family use cases; the Desktop page does not establish that every workflow is unique to Desktop or enabled by default.

Cognition’s integration list includes Slack and Linear MCP servers; Sentry, Stripe, Vercel, Datadog, Notion, Figma and Atlassian MCP servers; ESLint and Prettier extensions; and language tooling for Rust, C/C++, Go and Python.
Examples described by the vendor include searching Slack, querying or updating Linear issues, inspecting Sentry issues and stack traces, managing Vercel deployments, and accessing Jira and Confluence. Check the current integration documentation and permissions before assuming a connector is installed, authenticated or available to every workspace. The published list should not be read as exhaustive.

- Which repositories, tickets, logs and deployment environments may the agent read?
- Can the integration modify issues, deployments or documents, or is it read-only?
- Where are credentials stored, and can access be revoked per workspace?
- What data may leave your organization’s approved systems?

Is Devin Desktop the same as Windsurf?
Yes, according to the official FAQ: Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf. The over-the-air update is described as carrying plans, pricing, extensions, settings, workflows and in-progress work forward, with the name and branding changing. Windsurf for JetBrains is separately stated to remain available.

How to choose a tier
- Free: suitable for evaluating the interface before committing budget, subject to the allowance shown in your account.

- Teams: model the fixed charge and the number of full seats together. Calculate the cost for your actual roster, not just the base figure.

What the available evidence says about results
Cognition’s 2026 WPP Enterprise Solutions customer story reports that a Halfords e-commerce rebuild delivered 110% of contracted scope in 25% less time, unit-test coverage rose from 80% to 99%, and average lifecycle efficiency gains were 32%. These are vendor-published, project-specific figures, not independent estimates or a promise of typical results.
Shahil Bhimji, WPP Enterprise Solutions’ chief engineering officer, is quoted by Cognition saying: “With new clients it’s always AI-assisted software delivery, never tool-first. We’ve completely reshaped how we deliver software, augmenting every part of the SDLC so the end-to-end gets the 30-40% efficiency gains we’ve proven in live environments. And we regularly talk about our partnership with Cognition as the foundation of how we deliver that.” This is a customer statement published by Cognition.
Cognition also reports benchmark task costs of $5.84 for Fable 5, $2.68 for Fable 5.1 and $1.43 for Devin Fusion on FrontierCode 1.1 Extended at medium effort. Those are vendor-reported costs under that benchmark, not universal development costs or a total-cost comparison for every user. No independent, representative statistic establishing typical Devin Desktop productivity gains is established by these figures.
Human review and operating controls
Define an acceptance contract
Before dispatching work, state the expected behavior, files or services in scope, commands to run, compatibility requirements and what the agent must not change. Require a short summary of assumptions and unresolved risks.
Review the diff, not just the explanation
Read every changed file, especially authentication, authorization, payment, data migration and infrastructure code. An articulate summary does not prove correctness.

Run independent checks
Use your formatter, linter, unit and integration tests, type checker, dependency scanner and CI pipeline. Add a regression test for each bug fixed. For UI changes, inspect the rendered result at relevant viewport sizes and states.
Control permissions
Give integrations and agents the minimum repository, ticket, deployment and production-data access needed for the task. Separate investigation credentials from write credentials where your tooling allows it, and record approvals for consequential actions.

Common problems and practical fixes
The agent changes too much
Narrow the prompt, name the allowed directories and request a plan before edits. Split a migration into reviewable stages and reset unrelated changes before retrying.
Tests pass but behavior is wrong
Check whether the tests cover the acceptance criteria and real boundary conditions. Add a failing regression test first, then ask for the smallest implementation that makes it pass.
An integration cannot find data
Verify that the relevant MCP server or extension is installed, authenticated and enabled for the current workspace. Confirm project IDs, repository context and permission scopes; do not assume a similarly named workspace is the right one.
Context is missing
Provide links or identifiers for the issue, relevant files, logs and reproduction. Ask the agent to list the evidence it used and the evidence it could not access.

Assign non-overlapping files or responsibilities, keep tasks small and merge one change at a time. Resolve conflicts manually and rerun the full validation suite after integration.
