Short answer: do not try to make Selenium, Puppeteer, Playwright or Cypress solve a production Cloudflare challenge. Cloudflare explicitly does not support those automation frameworks for that purpose. If you are a legitimate visitor, troubleshoot the browser, JavaScript, extensions, network and session IP, then give the site owner the error code and Ray ID. If you are testing a site you own, use Cloudflare Turnstile’s documented test sitekeys and secret keys, and verify every token server-side with Siteverify.
First identify which problem you are solving
The correct fix depends on whether you are trying to access somebody else’s protected site or testing your own integration.

Cloudflare’s Supported browsers documentation, last updated August 18, 2026, says: “Browser automation frameworks, such as Selenium, Puppeteer, Playwright, and Cypress, are not supported for solving production challenges.” A modern browser being supported does not make an automated browser an approved challenge solver.
Why Cloudflare keeps asking you to verify
A challenge loop can be caused by the environment rather than a site outage. Cloudflare lists unstable networks, unsupported or heavily modified browsers, disabled JavaScript and bot-like signals among possible causes. A Managed Challenge can also fail when the solve comes from a different IP than the request that received the challenge.

Browser and script conditions
- Use an up-to-date browser that Cloudflare supports. Internet Explorer is excluded.
- Confirm JavaScript is enabled and that the page’s scripts are not blocked by a content filter.
- Temporarily disable extensions that block scripts, alter headers or modify browser signals. Re-enable them one at a time after diagnosis.
- Try a private window to separate extension and cached-state problems from the account or network.
Network and session consistency
- Retry on a stable connection rather than a congested or repeatedly dropping link.
- As a diagnostic, try another network. If practical, test briefly without a VPN or proxy.
- Keep the same public IP from challenge issuance through the solve. Switching networks, proxies or VPN exits mid-flow can invalidate the solve.
What automation changes
Automation frameworks can alter browser signals and timing in ways that resemble bot activity. Cloudflare does not provide an approved method for making those signals pass a production challenge. Treat a failure in Playwright, Selenium, Puppeteer or Cypress as an unsupported test design, not as an invitation to evade detection.
A supported troubleshooting sequence for legitimate visitors
- Record evidence before refreshing. Write down the visible error code and Ray ID. If the site owner asks, open developer tools, save the console output and capture a HAR file without editing it.
- Verify browser basics. Update the browser, enable JavaScript, and remove extensions that interfere with scripts or privacy signals. Retry in a private window.
- Stabilize the connection. Avoid changing VPN exits, proxies or networks during one challenge attempt. Test a second network only as a diagnostic.
- Retry once in a clean session. Close the affected tabs, open a new private session and load the page again. Repeated refreshes can create more challenge attempts without addressing the cause.
- Interpret logs carefully. A Private Access Token request returning HTTP 401 can be expected and is not, by itself, proof that Turnstile failed. Challenge-related subdomain lookup failures can likewise be non-fatal when the widget still completes.
- Escalate to the administrator. Provide the error code, Ray ID, approximate time, browser version, network type and the requested console or HAR evidence. Cloudflare’s visitor guidance does not include an automation workaround for production challenges.
How to test Turnstile with Selenium, Playwright or another framework
For an owned site, replace production credentials in your test environment with Cloudflare’s documented dummy sitekeys and corresponding test secret keys. Cloudflare’s Turnstile testing documentation, last updated May 5, 2026, says: “Use dummy sitekeys and secret keys to test your Turnstile implementation without triggering real challenges that would interfere with automated testing suites.” The test credentials provide stable success, failure, invisible and interactive scenarios.

Keep test and production configuration separate
- Store test keys only in test configuration and secrets management.
- Use a test hostname or staging deployment where practical.
- Never commit production secrets to a test repository or substitute test keys into production.
- Assert the expected outcome for each documented test key instead of asserting that a real challenge was solved.
Validate the token on the server
The browser widget produces a token; that is only the client side of the integration. Your server must send the token to Cloudflare’s Siteverify endpoint with the secret key and validate the response. Cloudflare warns that a token can be invalid, expired or already redeemed. Skipping Siteverify leaves the integration incomplete, even when the widget appears to succeed in the browser.
A robust automated test therefore has two assertions: the expected widget outcome in the browser and the server’s Siteverify decision. Include tests for an expired token, a reused token and a missing token, not just the happy path.

Cloudflare error codes as a diagnostic branch
Use an error code to choose the next check, not as proof of a single root cause. Cloudflare’s current error-code guidance maps these examples as follows:

An occasional Private Access Token 401 is generally safe to ignore when the widget resolves and returns a valid token. Do not “fix” that log line by weakening security controls without evidence that token verification actually failed.

Why verification fails specifically in Playwright
Playwright is one of the frameworks Cloudflare names as unsupported for solving production challenges. A failure therefore cannot be repaired by a Cloudflare-approved Playwright flag. For an owned site, run Playwright against the staging configuration with Turnstile test keys, keep the test browser’s network stable, and verify the resulting token through your server’s Siteverify path. For a site you do not own, stop at collecting the error code and Ray ID.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Do not measure production challenge pass rates. Cloudflare does not support automation frameworks for solving those challenges, so such a metric would describe an unsupported setup rather than a reliable integration.
- Make QA deterministic. Turnstile test keys let a suite exercise known outcomes without depending on changing risk signals, IP reputation or third-party challenge timing.
- Separate browser and server failures. A visible widget result does not replace Siteverify; log the server response and token age to identify expiry, reuse or transport errors.
- Preserve diagnostics. Ray IDs, error codes, timestamps and unmodified HAR files give an administrator actionable evidence while avoiding repeated blind retries.

Can I make headless Chrome pass a Cloudflare production challenge?
Cloudflare does not support Selenium, Puppeteer, Playwright or Cypress for solving production challenges. Use a normal supported browser for legitimate access, or Turnstile test keys for owned-site QA.
Is a Turnstile token valid just because the checkbox completed?
No. Your server must send each token to Siteverify and handle invalid, expired and already-redeemed responses.
