Microservices describe how an application is structured; an API describes how software components communicate. They are not competing alternatives: a microservice may expose or consume an API, and an API can connect parts of a monolithic application or integrate an external service.

Microservices and APIs answer different questions

When someone asks “microservices or APIs?”, the comparison mixes two levels of design. Microservices are an architectural style: they describe the arrangement and operation of parts of an application. An API is an interface or communication contract: it describes how one software component can request functionality or exchange data with another.

For example, a payments service might be a separately operated component in a microservices architecture. Its API defines how another component asks it to process a payment. The service is an architectural unit; the API is the agreed way to interact with that unit. AWS makes this distinction between independent application services and APIs as communication contracts, while noting that APIs also serve integrations beyond microservices (AWS: What’s the Difference Between Microservices and APIs?).

Question Microservices API
What is it? An architectural approach for structuring an application as a suite of services. An interface or contract through which software components request functionality or exchange data.
What does it help decide? How application capabilities are divided, owned, deployed, and operated. What callers can request and how they interact with a component.
Does it require the other? Microservices commonly communicate through APIs, but the architecture is not itself an API. No. An API can connect components in a monolith or integrate an external service.

What is a microservice?

A microservice is an independently operated service that contributes a capability to a larger application. AWS describes microservices as independent components that make up an application and communicate through well-defined APIs (AWS: What are Microservices?).

Martin Fowler and James Lewis describe the style as developing a single application “as a suite of small services, each running in its own process and communicating with lightweight mechanisms, often an HTTP resource API” (“Microservices,” 2014). They also note that there is no precise definition. In practice, “microservice” should not be treated as a fixed size or a guarantee of a particular technology. The defining idea is a system of services with meaningful operational independence, rather than simply many small code modules.

A service boundary is useful when it reflects a coherent application capability and the team can actually develop, release, and operate that service with appropriate independence. Dividing software into more processes without meaningful boundaries can add coordination and network costs without creating the intended autonomy.

What is an API?

An API (application programming interface) is the contract a software component offers to callers. It defines the available interactions, such as operations a caller can request or information it can exchange. The API may be intended for another component inside the same application, or for an external integration.

An API does not tell you by itself how the implementation is organized. A monolithic application can offer APIs to its internal components or to external clients. A microservice can expose an API to other services. A component can also consume an API without being a microservice itself. In all these cases, the API is the interaction boundary, not proof of a particular architecture.

How APIs and microservices work together

In a microservices system, each service needs a defined way to communicate with the others. APIs provide those boundaries: a caller relies on the agreed contract rather than reaching directly into another service’s implementation. This separation can make it possible to change or operate services more independently, if the boundaries and ownership are designed to support that goal.

But every call between separately running services crosses a network boundary. Unlike a direct interaction inside one process, a network request can add latency or fail because a service or connection is unavailable. A request may also pass through several services, making it harder to identify where a problem began. AWS’s Well-Architected guidance calls out the need to consider segmentation alongside latency, debugging, and tracing complexity (REL03-BP01 Choose how to segment your workload).

This means “services communicate through APIs” is not the same as “APIs make microservices easy.” APIs define interactions; teams still need to operate the distributed system around those interactions, including monitoring, logging, tracing, auditing, and data consistency. AWS’s microservices whitepaper discusses these as system-level concerns (Implementing Microservices on AWS).

Can you have APIs without microservices?

Yes. APIs are useful wherever one software component needs a defined way to interact with another. A monolithic application can expose an API to external clients or use interfaces between parts of its code. An organization can also use an API to connect to a third-party service. None of those arrangements, on its own, means the application has been split into microservices. AWS explicitly describes API use beyond microservices, including third-party integrations (AWS: What’s the Difference Between Microservices and APIs?).

The reverse distinction matters too: adopting microservices does not eliminate the need for APIs. Services still need communication contracts. The useful decision is therefore usually not whether to have APIs, but whether application capabilities should remain together or be divided into independently operated services—and, if divided, where their interfaces belong.

Microservices versus a monolith: the architecture decision

Because an API is not an alternative application architecture, compare microservices with a monolith when deciding how to structure an application. A monolith keeps application capabilities within one application deployment; microservices split capabilities into services that may be developed, deployed, operated, and scaled independently. Independence is a potential benefit, not an automatic result of choosing the label.

Decision area Questions to answer Microservices can help when… What to watch
Deployment Do components need to be released on different schedules? Is a shared release process a real constraint? Independent releases would solve a meaningful delivery problem. Separate services also require reliable deployment automation and coordination around their contracts.
Scaling Do different capabilities have substantially different load or resource needs? Some capabilities need to scale independently of the rest of the application. Splitting without a distinct scaling need can add operational work without a corresponding advantage.
Boundaries and ownership Can capabilities be separated into coherent areas with clear responsibility? Service boundaries map to real application capabilities and teams that can own them. Unclear boundaries create dependencies across services and complicate change.
Data management Are data boundaries understood? What consistency is required when work crosses services? The team can define workable ownership and handle cross-service data needs. Cross-service consistency becomes a system concern, not just a local implementation detail.
Communication and reliability What latency, availability, and failure-handling costs do network calls add? The benefits of separate services outweigh the extra communication and failure boundaries. Calls can fail or add latency; interactions across several services are harder to trace and debug.
Operations Can the team support logs, metrics, traces, auditing, deployment automation, and distributed debugging? The team can operate and diagnose the distributed system as well as build it. More separately running components raise system-wide monitoring and troubleshooting demands.

These are decision axes, not a scorecard with a universal cutoff. AWS guidance emphasizes choosing how to segment a workload in light of its needs and the operational consequences, rather than treating one architecture as right for every application (AWS Well-Architected Framework).

A practical decision process

  1. Identify the constraint. Name the delivery, scaling, ownership, or data problem that a service split is meant to solve. “We want microservices” is not itself a problem statement.
  2. Find candidate boundaries. Look for application capabilities that can be clearly described and assigned ownership, rather than dividing code solely to make components smaller.
  3. Check independence. Ask whether each proposed service could genuinely be developed, released, and operated independently. If ordinary changes require coordinated edits and releases across many services, the boundary may not deliver much autonomy.
  4. Map data and communication. Identify which service owns each relevant data boundary, what other services need from it, and what latency, consistency, or failure-handling implications follow from those interactions.
  5. Assess operating capacity. Confirm that the team can observe and troubleshoot calls across services, using logs, metrics, and traces, and support the deployment and monitoring processes the system needs.
  6. Compare the benefit with the new burden. Choose microservices when independent boundaries and delivery or scaling needs justify the distributed-system complexity. If they do not, a monolith with well-defined internal or external APIs may be the more appropriate structure.

There is no universal service count, team size, or application scale at which microservices become correct. The available guidance frames this as a workload-specific segmentation decision, not a threshold-based rule.

API as a concrete example: ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, made by Yorker Media. It illustrates the interface-versus-architecture distinction: the caller sends a URL to an API endpoint and receives a screenshot or PDF; that interaction describes the API, not the architecture of the caller’s application. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.

A cURL request for a screenshot looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The service accepts options for captures such as full-page screenshots, a CSS-selected element, device viewport, dark mode, PDF output, custom CSS or JavaScript, and waiting for a selector or network idle. It can also accept custom headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, or geolocation. Its clean-shot options can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

ScreenshotNeo’s stated plans are Free at 1,000 shots per month with no card, Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000, and Business at $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.

Common misconceptions

  • “An API means the application uses microservices.” No. APIs can connect components in a monolith or integrate a third-party service.
  • “Microservices are just small modules.” Not necessarily. The architectural idea includes separately running services and operational boundaries, not simply dividing source code into small pieces.
  • “An API removes the cost of distributed communication.” No. It defines how components interact; network latency, failures, and cross-service debugging remain architecture and operations concerns.
  • “Independent deployment and scaling happen automatically.” They are possible benefits when service boundaries and operating practices support them, not guaranteed outcomes of splitting an application.
