Cloudflare Workers is Cloudflare’s serverless application platform. You deploy JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, or Rust code and Cloudflare runs it across its network without you managing servers. A Worker can serve a web page, expose an API, call other services, run AI inference, process a queue, or execute scheduled automation. The right design depends on your request volume, CPU needs, data model, and trigger type—not simply on whether an application is “serverless.”

This guide explains what Workers can run, how bindings connect code to data and platform services, which architecture fits common web apps, and how the Free and Standard Paid plans differ. Figures and limits below come from Cloudflare pages updated August 28 and September 5, 2026; verify them before committing to a budget.

What Cloudflare Workers does

Workers is a managed runtime for deploying application code close to users on Cloudflare’s global network. Cloudflare documents frontends, backend APIs, serverless AI inference, background jobs, and observability as use cases. The overview names React, Vue, Svelte, Next, Astro, and React Router among supported web frameworks, and JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, and Rust among supported languages. Framework adapters can have their own runtime requirements, so confirm that a framework feature is compatible with Workers before designing around it.

A Worker receives an event, executes your handler, and returns a response or performs work through a trigger. You do not provision virtual machines or patch an operating system. You are still responsible for application code, secrets, data design, authentication, error handling, and staying within the limits for the particular invocation.

A minimal Worker request handler

The following JavaScript module returns text for every HTTP request. In a real project, your deployment configuration supplies the entry point and bindings.

export default {
  async fetch(request, env, ctx) {
    const url = new URL(request.url);

    if (url.pathname === "/health") {
      return new Response(JSON.stringify({ ok: true }), {
        headers: { "content-type": "application/json" }
      });
    }

    return new Response("Hello from Cloudflare Workers", {
      headers: { "content-type": "text/plain" }
    });
  }
};

The request object contains the incoming HTTP request, env contains configured bindings and secrets, and ctx can keep work alive with platform-supported background execution. Keep the handler small and asynchronous: waiting for a network response does not consume CPU time, but parsing, transforming, or computing does.

What you can build

Web frontends and APIs

Workers can serve static assets and dynamic routes from one deployment, making it practical to pair a frontend with API endpoints. A route can validate input, authenticate a user, read data, call an upstream service, and return JSON without a separate server fleet.

Background and scheduled automation

Cron Triggers run scheduled jobs, while Queue Consumers process messages away from the user-facing request. Use these for email preparation, imports, thumbnail generation, synchronization, or other work that should not delay a browser response. Durable Object alarms provide scheduled work associated with a coordinated object.

AI inference and orchestration

Cloudflare lists serverless AI inference as a Workers use case. Treat inference as a workload with its own latency, CPU, memory, and service quotas; do not assume that an HTTP request and a long-running model operation have identical limits.

Bindings: how Workers reaches data and services

A binding grants a Worker a capability to a Cloudflare resource. Instead of embedding a database URL or secret in source code, your handler receives a named API on env. Cloudflare’s bindings documentation says the underlying secret is not exposed to Worker code.

Binding or service Best fit
D1 SQL application data and relational queries
KV Key-value reads such as configuration, flags, or cached responses
Durable Objects Coordinated, strongly ordered state such as a room, counter, or real-time session
R2 Object storage for files, images, exports, and other blobs
Queues Durable asynchronous background processing
Hyperdrive Connectivity to supported external databases
Workflows Multi-step, durable processes
Service bindings Calling another Worker without routing through a public URL

The exact binding name is part of your deployment configuration. A handler using a D1 binding might look like this:

export default {
  async fetch(request, env) {
    const result = await env.DB
      .prepare("SELECT id, title FROM posts ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 20")
      .all();

    return Response.json(result.results);
  }
};

This example assumes a D1 binding named DB and a table named posts. For production code, validate parameters, handle database errors, and return an intentional status code rather than exposing raw exceptions.

A practical full-stack architecture

Cloudflare’s web-app guidance describes a common starting point: Workers serve frontend assets and API routes, while D1 stores application data. Add services only when the access pattern requires them.

  1. Request layer: route browser and API requests to a Worker.
  2. Application layer: keep authentication, validation, business rules, and response formatting in the Worker.
  3. Relational data: use D1 for users, orders, or records that need SQL queries and relationships.
  4. Fast key-value data: use KV for data accessed by key, such as feature flags or read-heavy configuration.
  5. Files: store uploads and generated artifacts in R2 rather than in a database row.
  6. Coordination: use Durable Objects when one logical entity needs serialized updates or real-time coordination.
  7. Async work: enqueue expensive or retryable tasks with Queues and process them separately.

This is an architecture map, not a requirement that every application use every service. Minimize moving parts until a measured access pattern justifies another binding.

Plans, pricing, and quotas

Cloudflare’s Workers pricing page, updated August 28, 2026, lists the following figures:

Item Free Standard Paid
Requests 100,000 requests per day 10 million requests included per month; $0.30 per additional million
CPU allocation 10 ms per invocation 30 million CPU milliseconds included per month; $0.02 per additional million CPU milliseconds
Account charge No Workers charge stated here $5 monthly minimum per account

The $5 minimum is not a total bill for every Cloudflare service. D1, KV, R2, Queues, Workflows, and Hyperdrive have their own allowances and metering. Cloudflare states that Workers pricing has no additional data-transfer or throughput charges, but you should model storage and service usage separately.

Runtime limits you must design around

The limits page, updated September 5, 2026, distinguishes active CPU time from elapsed wall time. Network waiting contributes to duration but not CPU time.

Limit Documented value
Memory 128 MB on Free and Paid plans
Subrequests 50 per Free invocation; 10,000 per Paid invocation by default
HTTP CPU time 10 ms on Free; Paid HTTP requests can be configured up to five minutes, with a 30-second default
HTTP wall time No hard limit while the client remains connected
Cron, Queue Consumer, Durable Object Alarm wall time 15 minutes

“No hard wall-time limit” does not mean unlimited computation. CPU limits still apply, and a browser, proxy, or client can disconnect. For long work, acknowledge the request quickly and move processing to a queue or workflow. For high fan-out APIs, count every outbound fetch and binding operation against the relevant subrequest limit.

Choosing Workers for your workload

Workers is a strong fit when

  • Requests are stateless or can be modeled with the available bindings.
  • You want frontend and API code near users without managing servers.
  • Traffic is bursty and you prefer usage-based capacity.
  • Background tasks can be queued or scheduled.
  • Your framework and required APIs support the Workers runtime.

Investigate alternatives or a hybrid when

  • Your process needs more than 128 MB memory or sustained CPU-heavy execution.
  • You require an operating-system package, unrestricted filesystem access, or a daemon.
  • A framework feature assumes a conventional Node.js server and has no compatible adapter.
  • One request must hold a connection open while doing work longer than clients and trigger limits allow.
  • Your data model depends on a database or feature not available through a suitable binding.

Measure CPU time, subrequests, payload sizes, and downstream latency with representative traffic. A low request count can still be expensive or fail if each invocation performs heavy computation or many fetches.

Deployment and operations checklist

  1. Choose the invocation types: HTTP, Cron, Queue, Durable Object alarm, or Workflow.
  2. Choose the data model before writing handlers: SQL, key-value, objects, coordinated state, or external database.
  3. Define bindings and keep secrets out of source code.
  4. Set explicit timeouts and status codes for every upstream call.
  5. Make retries safe with idempotency keys or deduplication.
  6. Track CPU duration, subrequest count, memory pressure, errors, and downstream response times.
  7. Load-test the slowest route and the largest realistic payload, then compare usage with the plan’s included quotas.
  8. Document which limits apply to each trigger so a scheduled job is not accidentally designed like an HTTP request.

Common failure modes and fixes

CPU time exceeded

Cause: parsing, compression, cryptography, or loops exceed the invocation’s CPU allowance. Fix: reduce payload work, stream where possible, cache results, split the job, or move it to a paid plan or asynchronous trigger. Waiting on an upstream request will not itself consume CPU, but processing its response will.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Too many subrequests

Cause: a fan-out route performs more fetches or service operations than the plan permits. Fix: batch calls, cache stable data, parallelize only when safe, and move bulk processing to a queue.

Memory limit or oversized payload

Cause: buffering large files, building large arrays, or loading an entire response into memory. Fix: stream data, paginate queries, process records incrementally, or store large objects in R2.

Scheduled job times out

Cause: Cron, Queue Consumer, or Durable Object Alarm work exceeds its 15-minute wall-time limit. Fix: checkpoint progress, enqueue smaller units, and make each unit retryable.

Framework route works locally but fails after deployment

Cause: a Node-specific API, native dependency, or unsupported adapter assumption. Fix: verify the framework’s Workers support, replace incompatible APIs, and isolate platform-dependent code behind a small adapter.

Automating website screenshots from a Worker

A Worker can call an external screenshot service from an API route or queue consumer, but browser automation introduces its own timeouts, bot checks, consent banners, and failure handling. Keep the capture request asynchronous when users do not need the image immediately, and never treat a screenshot endpoint as proof that a page is healthy without checking its response.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. It supports full-page and selector captures, device presets, dark mode, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Workers replace a traditional backend?

It can provide HTTP APIs and backend logic, but compatibility depends on your framework, dependencies, memory needs, CPU usage, and data services. Some applications use Workers for the edge-facing layer and retain an external database or other backend.

Are CPU time and request duration the same?

No. CPU time measures active execution; duration includes waiting on network operations. The limits and billing model should be evaluated using both.

Is the $5 Paid plan the complete cost of a Workers application?

No. The $5 monthly account minimum applies to the Workers Standard Paid plan. D1, KV, R2, Queues, Workflows, Hyperdrive, and other services have separate allowances or charges.

Which binding should I use for real-time shared state?

Durable Objects are the documented fit for coordinated state. KV is intended for key-value access and is not a substitute for serialized, strongly coordinated updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Workers is most compelling when you need globally distributed HTTP code, APIs, and automation connected to Cloudflare services through bindings. Select the plan and architecture from measured CPU, request, subrequest, memory, and data requirements, and move long or retryable work to queues or workflows instead of stretching a request beyond its limits.
