Web automation means using code to control a browser or browser-like protocol to perform a user journey, collect information, render a page, or verify behavior. The durable approach is to choose a framework for your browser engines, language, protocol and execution model; locate elements by user-facing contracts; wait for conditions instead of time; and isolate every test’s state. Selenium WebDriver, Playwright and Puppeteer can all be sound choices, but for different jobs.
What web automation includes
There are two overlapping categories:
- Browser testing: drive a real browser through sign-in, checkout or another critical journey, then assert what a user can see and do.
- Scripted browser tasks: navigate pages, extract data, create PDFs or screenshots, exercise network flows, or perform an internal workflow.
A browser is not always the right layer. If an application exposes a stable API, use that API for setup and data operations, then reserve browser steps for the behavior that only a user can trigger. Browser sessions add rendering time, browser-version dependencies, authentication handling and failure modes.
Choose a framework by constraints, not rankings
| Option | Choose it when | Strengths documented by the project | Check before adopting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selenium WebDriver | You need a standards-based interface, broad language bindings, vendor drivers, or remote and distributed execution. | WebDriver is a platform- and language-neutral browser-driving interface. Selenium also provides Grid for distributed execution and IDE and related components. | Binding and driver setup, the support status of each browser, Grid operations, and the distinction between the stable WebDriver Recommendation and newer draft work. |
| Playwright | You want one API and test runner across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. | Integrated runner, auto-waiting, web-first assertions, tracing, parallelism and explicit browser-install commands. | Browser binaries must stay aligned with the installed Playwright release. Verify branded-browser and operating-system requirements. |
| Puppeteer | Your codebase is JavaScript-led and you need interaction, screenshots, PDFs, or Chrome-oriented performance and network workflows. | JavaScript library controlling browsers through Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi; its current guides provide locator-based waiting. | Confirm browser and protocol coverage for the exact version and task. Do not treat migration claims as an independent benchmark. |
WebDriver is standardized: the W3C specification describes it as a “platform- and language-neutral interface” for inspecting and controlling a browser. The W3C page lists a Recommendation dated 5 June 2018 and a Working Draft dated 2 July 2026; the latter is draft work, not a replacement you should assume is final. Selenium’s documentation describes WebDriver as its core interface and Selenium Manager as the default automated driver and browser-management path for its bindings.
Build the smallest useful journey first
- Define the user outcome. For example, “a signed-in user can submit an invoice and sees a confirmation number,” not “the third button turns green.”
- Decide what belongs outside the browser. Create test data through an API or fixture where possible; use the browser for the user-visible action and assertion.
- Give each test its own state. Isolate cookies, storage, accounts and records so tests can run in any order and in parallel.
- Choose a locator contract. Prefer an accessible role and name, a label, or a deliberate test ID. Treat a test ID as part of the application contract and change it intentionally.
- Wait on conditions. Wait for an element to be actionable or for an assertion to become true. Fixed sleeps hide races and make every run slower.
- Capture diagnostics. Keep the framework’s trace, console output, network errors and a screenshot or video on failure, subject to your data-retention policy.
Playwright: a complete first test
Playwright’s runner supports Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Install the package and the browser binaries for the same release, then commit the lockfile and record both versions in CI.

npm init playwright@latest
npx playwright install
npx playwright test
The following test uses a semantic role, creates isolated context state through the runner and retries a user-visible assertion instead of sleeping:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('user can submit an invoice', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.test/invoices/new');
await page.getByLabel('Customer').selectOption('acme');
await page.getByLabel('Amount').fill('125.00');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Submit invoice' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('status')).toContainText('Invoice submitted');
});
Before a click, Playwright checks that the target is visible, stable, able to receive events, enabled and uniquely matched. Its web-first assertions retry until success or timeout. If your application has a genuine readiness condition, assert that condition or wait for a selector, response or navigation that represents it; do not increase a global timeout to conceal a race.
Locator choices that survive UI changes
- Preferred:
getByRolewith an accessible name,getByLabel, or a documenteddata-testid. - Use carefully: text locators when wording is a stable part of the contract.
- Last resort: long CSS or XPath chains tied to DOM nesting. They break when layout markup changes, even though the user behavior has not.
Selenium WebDriver: when the standard matters
Selenium is a project, not just a driver: WebDriver bindings, browser integrations, Grid and other components fit together. Use it when your organization needs a WebDriver-based protocol, a particular language binding, vendor-driver integration or remote execution across a farm.
A minimal Python example (install the selenium package first) looks like this:

finally:
driver.quit()
Locator APIs differ by language and binding; use the binding’s supported accessible-locator methods rather than copying an unavailable selector. Selenium’s own testing material is guidance, not a universal recipe: application state, dependencies and browser incompatibilities determine the right waits and isolation strategy. For Grid, plan browser nodes, credentials, artifacts, capacity and cleanup as production infrastructure.
Puppeteer: JavaScript browser scripting
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library. Its current guide surfaced version 25.12.0, but releases change; pin the version you install and verify its browser and protocol coverage. Prefer its locator API, which waits for an element and action preconditions, over immediate DOM assumptions.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.test/invoices/new', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.locator('label=Customer').fill('Acme');
await page.locator('label=Amount').fill('125.00');
await page.locator('button:has-text("Submit invoice")').click();
await page.locator('[role="status"]').wait();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'invoice.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Adjust locator syntax to the Puppeteer version you pin. Lower-level waitForSelector can be appropriate for a precise condition, but a locator communicates the intended action and its readiness checks more clearly.
Waiting, state and reliability patterns
Replace sleeps with observable conditions
Wait for navigation, a response, an enabled control, a status message or a stable application state. A network-idle signal is not automatically proof that client-side rendering or a background job is complete; pair it with the user-visible result.

Keep tests independent
Use a fresh context or profile, unique records and controlled clock or timezone settings where the framework supports them. Clean up data even when a test fails. Never rely on a previous test’s cookies or ordering.
Control nondeterminism
Stub third-party calls when the behavior under test does not require the vendor, freeze externally generated identifiers, and make retries narrow. A retry can mask a real defect if it repeats a side effect; design idempotent setup and assert that a duplicate was not created.
Make failures actionable
Publish the failed URL, browser and framework versions, console errors, request failures and a trace or screenshot. Redact credentials and personal data before storing artifacts. Reproduce locally with the same browser binary and headed mode when timing or rendering is unclear.
Automating screenshots and PDFs

For production capture, decide how to handle cookie consent, popups, lazy-loaded images, authentication, timeouts, cache policy, viewport and output format. Those details often matter more than the screenshot call itself.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; the API accepts 63 options including full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF paper and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs and a usage API.
Its cleaning steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Performance, reproducibility and cost
- Startup: Reuse a browser process where safe, but create isolated contexts or profiles per test. Parallelism reduces wall-clock time while increasing CPU, memory and data-contention risk.
- Browser versions: Pin framework releases and record browser binaries in CI. Playwright browser versions track Playwright releases; update them deliberately together.
- Remote runs: Account for network latency, video and trace storage, Grid node capacity and cleanup. A local pass does not prove a distributed run is reliable.
- Timeouts: Set a realistic test timeout and shorter action or assertion timeouts. Diagnose slow dependencies instead of setting every timeout to minutes.
- Billing: For hosted screenshot capture, distinguish successful clean shots from failed loads and cache hits. ScreenshotNeo exposes that distinction in response headers.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Browser executable not found”
Install the binaries required by your pinned framework release (for Playwright, run its browser-install command), or configure the path to a managed browser. Ensure the CI image contains the same architecture and dependencies as local development.
“Element is not actionable” or a click times out
The locator may match a hidden duplicate, an overlay may intercept the event, or the application has not reached its ready state. Inspect the trace, assert uniqueness, wait for the real status condition and remove the overlay in test data. Do not force the click unless a genuine non-user interaction is intended.
Flaky tests after parallelization
Look for shared accounts, fixed record names, ports, files or server state. Allocate unique data per worker, isolate storage and make setup idempotent. Reduce concurrency only after fixing the shared dependency.
Driver or browser incompatibility
Align the Selenium binding, browser and driver, or align the Playwright package and downloaded binaries. Record versions in the job log. For Puppeteer, verify the exact browser and protocol combination supported by the pinned release.
Blank, blocked or consent-covered screenshots
Check navigation errors, authentication, viewport and wait conditions. For a hosted capture, inspect verdict and billing headers; ScreenshotNeo removes supported consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture and does not bill failed loads or bot checks.
A practical decision checklist
- Need a W3C WebDriver interface, a specific language binding or distributed Grid? Start with Selenium.
- Need Chromium, Firefox and WebKit behind one runner with tracing and web-first assertions? Evaluate Playwright.
- Need JavaScript-first Chrome ecosystem scripting, screenshots, PDFs or network work? Evaluate Puppeteer.
- Need a standalone screenshot or PDF endpoint, cleaning and MCP access rather than browser maintenance? Try ScreenshotNeo first.
- Whichever you choose, pin versions, use semantic locators, isolate state, wait on conditions and retain safe diagnostics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should browser automation replace API tests?
No. Use APIs for fast setup and direct contract checks, and reserve browser automation for behavior that requires the rendered interface or a real user journey.
Can one test suite use more than one framework?
Yes, when responsibilities are clear—for example, WebDriver for an existing Grid estate and Playwright for cross-engine end-to-end coverage. Share fixtures and reporting deliberately; duplicated journeys increase maintenance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow do I decide whether a failure is an application bug or automation bug?
Re-run with the same pinned browser and artifacts, inspect the user-visible condition and network or console errors, and compare a headed reproduction. A timeout without evidence is not a diagnosis.
