The project describes it as the successor to undetected-chromedriver and says it does not require Selenium or a ChromeDriver binary. You can install it with pip install nodriver, start a browser asynchronously, and navigate with await browser.get(...). Those are project-described design choices—not a guarantee that any website will allow automation.
What Nodriver is—and what “without WebDriver” means
Nodriver is an asynchronous Python package for browser automation and scraping. Its documented approach is to communicate with a Chromium-family browser through CDP. In a typical Selenium setup, Python sends commands through the WebDriver interface and a browser-specific driver such as ChromeDriver. Nodriver’s project description says its approach does not require that driver binary or a Selenium dependency.
“Without WebDriver” does not mean “without a browser.” Nodriver still needs a browser to launch or connect to. It also does not mean every browser or website is supported: the project recommends Chrome or a Chromium-based browser and lists Chromium, Chrome, Edge, and Brave as known to work. The README’s phrase “No more webdriver, no more selenium” is project positioning, not an independent comparison. Likewise, the project calls Nodriver the successor to undetected-chromedriver; that description should not be read as a promise of compatibility with every script written for the earlier package. Install Nodriver and check your browser setup
- Install Python and a supported browser. Use Chrome or a Chromium-based browser. The project lists Chromium, Chrome, Edge, and Brave as known to work, but does not publish a complete compatibility matrix in the materials cited here.
- Install the package. Run
python -m pip install nodriverin the Python environment that will run your script. The project’s documented installation command ispip install nodriver. Package and installation details - Save a script such as
capture_page.pywith the example below, then runpython capture_page.py. - For a machine without a display, consult the README’s headless guidance. It says headless mode is possible and mentions Xvfb as an option when no display is available. Exact setup depends on the operating system and environment.
A minimal asynchronous navigation example
This illustrates Nodriver’s documented startup and navigation pattern. It starts a browser and navigates to a page; it is not a complete scraping workflow and does not save a screenshot or extract structured data.

Examples and APIs may change between releases. Check the installed package’s documentation and release notes when adapting this example for production, particularly if upgrading an existing automation project.

Finding content and interacting with pages
The package description documents finding elements by text, CSS selector, and XPath. It also says common element lookup can include iframe content and can retry while waiting for an element. These facilities are useful when a page renders content after navigation, but they do not remove the need to understand the page’s structure or handle cases where a target never appears. The exact call signatures and return types depend on the API version you install. Consult the project documentation for the current form of a lookup or interaction before relying on a copied snippet. In particular, avoid assuming that an element exists simply because navigation completed: client-side applications may render it later, or not at all.
Working with CDP, tabs, cookies, and an existing browser
Nodriver’s documented capabilities extend beyond opening a page. The package description lists saving and loading cookies, connecting to a running Chrome debug session, inspecting tabs, and using CDP domains, methods, and events. These options make it possible to work with browser state and lower-level browser functionality, but they also bring operational responsibilities: protect stored cookies as credentials, avoid sharing sensitive browser profiles, and use only sessions and sites you are authorized to automate.

The API documentation describes browser commands, events, and returned objects. Its stated pattern is generally to call commands and use the returned objects as arguments to other commands, rather than constructing CDP types yourself. That makes Nodriver a higher-level Python interface over CDP; for specialized work, the API reference is the place to confirm the relevant domain and object behavior. Anti-detection claims: what they do and do not establish
The Nodriver project says direct communication offers better resistance to web application firewalls and describes the library as optimized to stay undetected for most anti-bot solutions. Those are project claims. The reviewed official materials do not provide an independently measured detection rate, a controlled benchmark, or a guarantee for any particular website or anti-bot service. A site may block or restrict automation based on its own systems, account state, network, browser configuration, or terms of use.

Version notes and migration cautions
The package page describes version 0.50.1 as a substantial rewrite associated with a switch to flat-mode connection. It also says iframe handling was included in more operations and advises thorough testing, especially for large projects. This is historical, version-specific context—not a statement that every later release has the same changes. Troubleshooting common setup and automation problems
- Python cannot import
nodriver: install the package in the same interpreter environment that runs the script. Check withpython -m pip show nodriver, using the samepythonexecutable you use to launch the script. - Browser startup fails: verify that Chrome or a Chromium-based browser is installed and available to the environment. The project lists supported browser families but does not supply a full OS/version matrix, so check its current package guidance for your setup.
- The script reports an async-related error: make sure calls such as
uc.start()andbrowser.get(...)are awaited inside an async function, and that the function is run through an event loop, as in the example. - A lookup returns no element or waits indefinitely: confirm the selector or text against the rendered page, allow for client-side rendering, and account for iframe content. A retrying lookup cannot make an element appear when the page failed to load it or the target is incorrect.
- Headless execution behaves differently on a server: confirm the browser can launch in that environment. The README mentions headless mode and Xvfb for machines without a display, but does not give a universal OS-specific recipe.
- An upgrade changes a working workflow: compare the installed version with its release notes and rerun representative tests. The project specifically cautioned that its 0.50.1 flat-mode rewrite warranted thorough testing, especially in large projects.
- A site blocks the automation: Nodriver’s stated anti-detection goals do not guarantee access. Respect the site’s controls and terms; do not interpret a block as a reason to evade access restrictions.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The official materials cited here do not publish a speed benchmark, reliability figure, or independently measured comparison with Selenium. Whether Nodriver fits a workload depends on the page, browser environment, concurrency, and the work performed after navigation. Measure your own task’s completion time and failure modes rather than relying on an unsupported general speed claim.

Nodriver is Python software installed through pip; the cited package materials do not state a usage price. The practical costs are the resources and engineering work needed to run browsers, manage state, handle failures, and maintain scripts as sites change. For recurring jobs, test representative pages, set sensible timeouts in your application, and record failures so that a network problem, browser launch issue, and changed page structure can be distinguished.
