Choose the model and interaction method together: OpenAI offers code-execution and screenshot-action routes, Anthropic offers browser-specific and general computer tools, and Gemini computer use proposes actions that your application executes. Then test the complete workflow on your own sites, browser, and safety rules. Official provider documentation available on September 29, 2026 describes different integration paths, not a controlled comparison of task success.
Choose the browser interaction method before choosing a model
A browser agent is more than an LLM. It is a loop: provide the model with the task and an observation; receive code or proposed actions; execute them in a browser you control; return the result; and verify that the goal was actually met. The model may decide what to do, but your application remains responsible for executing and constraining that decision.
The interaction method affects how much control you have, what evidence the model sees, how many round trips a task requires, and what your team must build. A screenshot-driven tool can work across varied interfaces, but may need repeated visual feedback. Page-aware browser tools can expose webpage content and actions more directly. Code execution can make custom loops and conditionals possible, but requires a secure runtime and careful handling of browser state.
OpenAI: code execution or computer actions
OpenAI documents two routes. With code execution, the model generates code that runs through an execution tool supplied by your application. Documentation examples use a persistent Playwright browser for JavaScript or a desktop runtime for Python or Ruby. This is a fit when your workflow benefits from direct browser control, custom logic, or a persistent session. OpenAI’s guide recommends code execution for GPT-6 Astra.

With the computer tool, the model returns structured actions such as clicking, typing, scrolling, or taking a screenshot based on visual observations. Your application executes the actions and returns updated screenshots. This can suit interfaces where visual interaction matters, but requires you to operate the loop and verify the resulting page. Neither route means OpenAI is supplying a managed browser environment: the application supplies and secures the runtime.
Anthropic: browser-specific tools or general computer use
Anthropic documents a browser toolset with page-aware operations, including reading a page, finding content, entering form data, and interacting with the page. Its tool-combinations guide says browser use is the closer fit when a task stays within webpages. Your client executes tool calls against a controlled browser and returns the results.
Anthropic also documents computer-use tools for more general interaction through screenshots and controls. That can be appropriate for arbitrary GUI work or tasks that extend beyond webpage semantics. Anthropic describes this route as typically slower than browser use because it needs screenshot feedback between action batches. Browser and computer toolsets are versioned; confirm that the particular model, tool version, and platform you intend to use are compatible before building around them.

Google Gemini: proposed actions executed by your application
Gemini computer use is an action-proposal loop, not a turnkey browser executor. Your application sends a prompt and screen state; the model returns a proposed function call; your code validates and executes it, commonly with a browser automation library such as Playwright; then you capture and send the updated state. Google’s Cloud documentation assumes Playwright familiarity and labels that offering a preview with limited SDK and console support. Confirm availability for your exact model and platform before relying on it.

This compares documented mechanics, not quality scores. Provider guides do not establish a controlled cross-provider benchmark, so the table cannot tell you which model will finish your particular workflow most reliably.
How to run a fair evaluation
Test complete tasks, not isolated model responses. Build a representative set of workflows using the sites, account states, browser, and policy constraints you expect in production. Include ordinary paths as well as recoverable problems, such as a changed layout, a slow page, or a missing expected control. Decide in advance what counts as success: a model saying “done” is not verification.

- Define the task and its success condition. Specify the intended outcome and what evidence confirms it, such as a visible status, a saved record, or a completed form shown in the browser.
- Use the same starting conditions. Keep browser, site data, permissions, and task instructions consistent across providers. Record the model ID, tool version, SDK, and runtime used for each run.
- Run enough representative attempts to expose variance. A single success or failure is not a dependable estimate. Keep failed and escalated runs in the results rather than discarding them.
- Record the whole interaction loop. Measure verified completion rate, recovery after UI changes, latency, action and screenshot counts, human escalation rate, and total cost per verified successful task.
- Choose the route that meets your operational requirements. Consider whether you can securely host its runtime, support the required platform, constrain its actions, and debug failures—not just whether the model can perform a clean demonstration.
These measures help expose trade-offs. For example, a route with more observations may improve a particular workflow’s recoverability but increase time and usage. That is something to measure on your tasks, not a general performance ranking.
Budget the entire task, not a token-rate headline
A browser task can involve repeated prompts, screenshots or other image input, model output, tool calls, retries, and browser infrastructure. Estimate these for the full action loop. Include isolation, session persistence, observability, and any human review needed to safely complete the workflow.

- OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra page lists $10.00 per million input tokens and $50.00 per million output tokens. These are model-specific rates, not a browser-task estimate; the page also says tool-specific models may have per-call fees.
- Google’s pricing page lists the legacy Gemini 2.5 Computer Use Preview at $1.25 per million input tokens and $10.00 per million output tokens for prompts up to 200,000 tokens, and $2.50 input and $15.00 output above that threshold. Google’s current computer-use pricing is described as ordinary token pricing for the supported model used; do not treat the legacy preview listing as a universal Gemini computer-use rate.
- Anthropic’s pricing documentation says tool schemas and tool-use content consume tokens, and server-side tools may add usage-based fees.
All these figures are provider-page rates accessed September 29, 2026, not a synchronized estimate for equivalent browser tasks. Recheck current pricing before procurement. A model page’s context window or maximum output is likewise a specification, not evidence that a browser task will fit, finish, or perform well.

For a concrete specification example, OpenAI lists a 1,050,000-token context window and 128,000-token maximum output for GPT-6 Astra. Those limits do not remove the need to budget image input, tool calls, action loops, latency, or runtime costs.
Build safety and failure handling into the harness
Browser pages are untrusted input. A page can contain instructions that conflict with the user’s task, and an agent may reach logged-in pages or controls with real consequences. Treat the browser runtime as a security boundary you must design—not as a side effect of choosing a provider.
- Restrict access: isolate the browser or VM, limit network destinations and available actions, and avoid exposing production credentials to a broadly capable agent.
- Require approval for consequential steps: pause for user confirmation before purchases, account changes, irreversible actions, or transmitting sensitive information.
- Cap execution: set maximum steps, time, and cost; define a safe stop and escalation path for unexpected screens or repeated failures.
- Check the result: verify the final browser state or a reliable application-side outcome instead of treating a tool call or model statement as proof.
- Check availability: confirm the exact model ID, compatible toolset version, SDK support, host, geography, and preview or general-availability status for your deployment.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The tool call is rejected or unavailable: the model, tool version, SDK, or platform may not match. Check the provider’s compatibility documentation for the exact combination you configured.
- The agent clicks the wrong place: screenshot-based actions can become stale after page changes. Return a fresh observation, constrain action batches, and confirm the target before executing high-impact actions.
- A browser script loses its session: the runtime may not preserve browser state between calls. Keep the browser/session lifecycle explicit and return the needed state to the model rather than assuming a new execution shares it.
- The task appears complete but the site did not save: require observable evidence of the final state, such as a confirmation or changed record, and make verification part of the task definition.
- Costs or latency climb unexpectedly: inspect retries, screenshot frequency, tool calls, and prompt history across the entire run. Set limits and benchmark cost per verified completion rather than per response.
- A page asks the agent to ignore its instructions: treat that text as untrusted content. Keep task instructions separate, limit permissions, and require a person to approve sensitive or irreversible steps.

Does choosing an LLM provider remove the need to run a browser?
Not necessarily. In the documented approaches here, your application executes code or proposed actions in a browser or computer environment; confirm the responsibilities of any separate hosted runtime before adopting it.
Can the same browser task be evaluated across different tool styles?
Yes, if you keep the task, initial state, success criteria, and safety policy equivalent. Record the tool route as part of the result because a comparison between different interaction methods is not a model-only comparison.
