Choose the document-generation path that matches the output
Before building a recipe, decide what the workflow must produce. A native Google Doc remains editable in Google Docs. A Message template result is a string that can contain text or markup. Conga is for workflows built around Conga document automation. DocuSign’s template action sends an envelope for a signature workflow; it should be treated as delivery and signing, not as a general-purpose document-generation action.

Confirm the action inputs and output in your Workato workspace and test the generated result in the destination application.
Plan the recipe before configuring actions
A reliable design begins with the business event and ends with a clear next step for the generated document. Workato documentation establishes connector behavior, but it does not prescribe a universal production recipe or a one-size-fits-all error-handling pattern. Define the workflow’s requirements before mapping fields.

- Trigger and source record: Identify the event that should create the document and the source record that contains the data. Confirm the source connector exposes the trigger and fields you need.
- Output and template owner: Decide whether the result must be an editable Google Doc, rendered content, a Conga document, or a signature envelope. Assign ownership of the template and its changes.
- Document conventions: Set the title or naming convention, destination or storage step, and any review or approval step that follows creation.
- Required data: List the fields the template depends on. Decide how the recipe should behave if a value is missing, empty, or unsuitable for the intended document.
- Permissions and identity: Choose the Workato connection and ensure its identity can access the template and any downstream destination.
- Failure handling: Decide how to surface missing values, denied permissions, invalid template IDs, and downstream failures. These are implementation concerns to design and test; the connector documentation does not define a complete reliability pattern.
Set up the Google Docs connection
Workato’s Google Docs connector uses Google Docs API v1 and documents OAuth 2.0 and service-account authentication. Workato recommends service accounts for consistent use. The appropriate identity depends on your workspace’s security policy and the documents the recipe must access.
Using OAuth 2.0
Connect the Google identity intended to run the recipe and verify that it has the necessary access to the template and resulting documents. Make sure the connection is managed in the correct Workato workspace and is available to the recipe.
Using a service account
- Enable the Google Docs API for the relevant Google Cloud project.
- Create and configure the service account and its key according to your organization’s security controls.
- Share the intended template document with the service account and grant the permissions required by the workflow.
- Connect the account in the Workato recipe workspace, then verify access by running a test against the intended template.
Keep private keys controlled and grant only the access required. A successful Workato connection alone does not prove that the identity can read the particular template; document sharing and permissions matter too.
Create a native Google Doc from a template
Use the Google Docs Create document from template action when the desired result is a new Google document based on a reusable Google Docs template. The documented inputs include the template document ID and template fields. The action returns a document ID and metadata, which can be passed to subsequent recipe steps.

- In the recipe, add the trigger that identifies the business event and provides the source record.
- Add the Google Docs connector action named Create document from template.
- Provide the template document ID. Use the ID for the intended Google document, and confirm the connected identity can access it.
- Map the source record’s values to the fields expected by the template. Verify the actual field names and values available in your template rather than assuming a particular mapping convention.
- Run a test with representative data, including fields that may be empty or contain unusual values.
- Inspect the resulting document in Google Docs for content, layout, and formatting. Use the returned document ID or metadata in the next recipe step, such as a downstream workflow you have separately configured.
Workato’s action documentation does not specify every mapping behavior or formatting edge case. Check the output in the target workspace before relying on assumptions about how a particular template field, formatting element, or unusual input will render.
When a simple document action is enough
The separate Google Docs Create document action takes a title and body and is documented as creating a document in simple paragraph format. It is a better fit for straightforward content that does not require a reusable template layout. Do not treat it as equivalent to the template action when the document depends on structured fields or a maintained reusable design.
Render a string with Message template
Workato’s Message template connector uses a Mustache template to produce a static string. It supports HTML, plain text, JSON, and XML output. Choose it when a later step needs generated content or structured markup, not when the requirement is specifically a native, editable Google Docs file.
Plan the receiving step as part of the recipe: a string is not automatically a stored or formatted business document. Confirm that the destination action accepts the output in the intended format, and validate the rendered result, especially when producing JSON or XML. The connector’s string output and Google Docs’ document output serve different purposes.

Use Conga for Conga-based document automation
If the organization’s workflow relies on Conga templates, use the relevant Conga connector path rather than trying to make a Google Docs action stand in for it. Workato documents Conga capabilities that include retrieving and downloading documents. Its Conga Composer action describes merging templates and data from one or more sources.
Confirm that the appropriate Conga connection, template, data inputs, and follow-on actions are available for your workflow. The documentation supports the role of Conga Composer in template merging; it does not establish that every Conga configuration produces the same file types, layout behavior, or workflow steps.
Add DocuSign as a signing stage
When the generated document must be sent through a signature process, DocuSign can be a subsequent workflow stage. Workato documents a Send document using a template action that uses a configured template, accepts document source URLs in a supported format, and returns envelope ID and status information.
Configure the template and provide source URLs in a format supported by the action. Treat the returned envelope details as the start or status of the DocuSign lifecycle, not as evidence that the earlier generation step succeeded exactly as intended. Test the handoff between generation, document availability, and envelope creation.

Check connectors and permissions before building around them
Workato describes its connectors as the mechanism for connecting business applications and exchanging data. Its connector overview states that the platform offers over 1,000 connectors, grouped as pre-built, universal, and community connectors. That is Workato’s own stated count in documentation accessed in 2026, not an independently audited inventory or a guarantee that a particular trigger or action is available in your workspace.
For each source and destination, check the precise trigger, actions, required fields, authentication options, and permissions. Connector availability alone does not establish that a specific operation is supported or that the connected identity has access to the records and templates the recipe needs.

Workato also documents a Google Docs MCP server for LLMs to create, read, update, and collaborate on documents through Workato’s integration environment. Its page describes user’s connection and builder’s connection modes; access depends on the selected connection and app permissions.
This is an adjacent route for an AI client, not another name for the standard Google Docs recipe action. Choose it when the intended interface is an MCP client and the connection model suits the access required. Choose the recipe action when the document belongs in a conventional automated recipe triggered by business data.

Test the finished workflow and troubleshoot failures
Test both the creation action and the whole path from trigger to downstream use. Use test records that cover expected values and likely exceptions, and confirm the result in the target app rather than relying solely on a successful action status.
