To convert a media file with FFmpeg, identify whether you need to change only its container or also its encoded audio or video. Use -c copy to copy compatible streams without re-encoding; choose codecs with -c:v and -c:a when the destination requires different streams. Then test the output in the player, editor, or upload service you actually plan to use: an .mp4 extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.
How FFmpeg conversion works
A media file has a container and one or more encoded streams. The container organizes the streams and related data; codecs determine how audio and video are encoded. Changing a container does not necessarily change the streams inside it. FFmpeg handles formats through libraries including libavformat and codecs through libavcodec, but exact support depends on the build installed on your system. FFmpeg reads an input specified with -i, applies options, then writes an output path. Its command-line options generally apply to the next input or output file, so put output settings before the output filename. The destination extension helps FFmpeg infer an output container, but it does not prove that the selected streams will work in that container or that the result will suit a particular device.
Choose between streamcopy and transcoding

The FFmpeg documentation defines transcoding as “the process of decoding a stream and then encoding it again.” Use it when the output needs processed or differently encoded streams, not just because the filename should change.

Check your FFmpeg build first
Support varies with the installed FFmpeg version, build configuration, and external libraries. The online documentation is regenerated nightly and describes the newest revision, so it can differ from the help or capabilities on your computer. Check the FFmpeg documentation index and inspect the local build before relying on a format or codec.

Convert a video or audio file
Start with a basic conversion
A basic command that asks FFmpeg to convert an AVI input to an MP4 output is:
ffmpeg -i input.avi output.mp4
FFmpeg chooses output encoders based on its defaults and the output format. That is a starting point, not a compatibility or quality guarantee. If the destination has specific codec requirements, select those explicitly rather than assuming the extension is enough.

Convert to MP4 with explicit video and audio codecs
For example, to encode video with the H.264 encoder and audio with the AAC encoder, use:
ffmpeg -i input.avi -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4

This requires the installed build to support those encoders. The command specifies codecs, not a universal quality level or file size: choose any additional encoder settings to meet the destination’s documented requirements, and check the resulting file in that destination.
Convert audio to MP3
To encode an input’s audio as MP3, specify the audio encoder:
ffmpeg -i input.wav -c:a libmp3lame output.mp3
The example assumes the installed build supports libmp3lame. If the input contains video as well as audio, an output audio file needs only the intended audio stream; explicitly map it when there are multiple audio tracks.
Change the container without re-encoding
Try streamcopy when you want to put existing streams into a different container and they are suitable for that destination:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4
This copies streams; it does not turn their codecs into MP4-compatible codecs. If the output container rejects a stream, use a compatible alternative container or transcode only the incompatible stream. A changed extension without a successful container conversion is not a substitute for this operation.
Transcode only the stream that needs to change
You can encode video while copying compatible audio, for example:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libx264 -c:a copy output.mp4
Here, video is transcoded and audio is streamcopied. The combination is appropriate only if the input audio codec is accepted by the output container and intended player. FFmpeg’s command reference documents stream-specific codec options such as -c:v and -c:a.

Files may contain multiple video or audio tracks, subtitles, attachments, or data streams. FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection may not match what you want in the output. Use -map to choose input streams deliberately; stream specifiers can target a type or index. For example, mapping the first video stream and second audio stream is written as:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:1 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4

This example assumes those streams exist; stream indexes are zero-based. Inspect the input’s reported streams and adjust the maps to match. Explicit mapping is particularly useful when a file has several language tracks or when you want to omit subtitles, attachments, or other streams. See the official stream-selection documentation.
Convert with the destination in mind
Before choosing codecs or options, check the receiving device, editor, or upload service for its accepted containers, codecs, and any limits. A container and codec that work in one player may not work in another. Decide whether you also need to change dimensions, frame appearance, audio sampling, or other media properties; those operations require processing rather than pure streamcopy. There is no single bitrate, preset, or codec setting that can be recommended for every target from the file extension alone.

Check that picture and sound are present, the intended tracks were selected, playback timing is acceptable, and the file meets the receiving service’s requirements. FFmpeg cautions that it does not validate whether an encoder can convert every selected stream or whether the result is acceptable for the output format.

The output will not play or upload
The chosen container may not support one of the copied streams, or the destination may not accept the codec combination. Check the target’s requirements and the input streams. If only the container needs to change, try a supported container with streamcopy; if a codec must change, transcode that stream with -c:v or -c:a.
FFmpeg reports that an encoder or format is unavailable
The installed build may not include the requested encoder, decoder, or format support. Run ffmpeg -formats or ffmpeg -codecs and use an available option, or install a build whose documented capabilities meet the need. The general support reference is useful, but local build output is the relevant check for your installation.
The wrong language or track appears
Automatic stream selection may have chosen a different audio or video stream from the one you intended. Use -map with the correct input index and stream specifier, and omit mappings for tracks you do not want in the output.

The command changes the wrong file or option
FFmpeg option order matters: options generally apply to the next input or output. Put input options before the relevant -i and output options before the output filename. Review the command reference if a setting is being applied to a different file than intended.
The output quality or size is not what you expected
Streamcopy preserves the encoded streams, while transcoding creates newly encoded streams. A lossy re-encode can reduce quality, and file size depends on the source, selected encoder, settings, and content. Avoid treating a particular extension or generic setting as a guarantee; verify against the quality and size requirements of your workflow.
The conversion takes a long time
Transcoding requires decoding and encoding and can be computationally expensive. If no codec or processing change is required, streamcopy can avoid that encoding work. If filtering, resizing, resampling, or a new codec is necessary, processing is part of the job; allow time for the selected operation rather than expecting a container-only remux speed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing a file extension convert its format?
No. Renaming a file changes its name, not its container or encoded streams. Use FFmpeg to write an output in the intended container, and select or transcode streams as needed.
Can streamcopy reduce quality?
Streamcopy does not re-encode the streams, so it avoids quality loss from another lossy encode. It still depends on the destination accepting those streams.
