To archive a website, first decide whether you need a public reference snapshot, a private offline copy, or a managed long-term collection. Use the Wayback Machine for a quick shareable capture, ArchiveBox for a self-hosted copy with multiple output formats, and Archive-It for an organizational web-archiving service. No method automatically preserves every page or makes interactive features work offline: set crawl boundaries, retain preservation files when needed, and check the result page by page.
If you are asking “How do I archive an entire website?” or “Will the Wayback Machine save a whole website?”, the key distinction is scope: saving one URL is not the same as crawling a domain. This guide explains how to choose a method, define that scope, verify what was captured, and handle the legal and privacy implications.
Choose the kind of archive you need
Before capturing anything, write down the purpose, scope, and replay requirement. Those choices determine whether a quick snapshot is enough or whether you need a repeatable crawl and preservation package.
- Purpose: Is this a public citation, a private backup, legal or research evidence, or a long-term institutional collection?
- Scope: Are you saving one URL, a path within a site, an entire domain, or several related domains? Define starting URLs (seeds), crawl depth, exclusions, and how often to recapture.
- Replay needs: Do readers only need to see the page, or must the archive retain resources and behavior? Static pages are usually easier to replay than pages dependent on JavaScript, forms, login sessions, or server-side functions.
Also decide who may access the saved material, where the files will live, and how you will document missing or failed pages. A copy is only useful if you can identify what it contains and retrieve it later.

Which website archiving method should you use?

The Internet Archive describes Archive-It as a service for organizations to harvest, build, and preserve digital-content collections. ArchiveBox is open-source, self-hosted software; its project documentation describes it as a way to preserve website content in a variety of formats. The Digital Preservation Coalition explains web archiving in terms of a crawler starting from seed URLs and gathering pages and related resources into a WARC file. These are different jobs: a screenshot records appearance, while a web archive aims to retain pages and supporting resources for later access.
Save a public snapshot with the Wayback Machine
Use the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine when you want a quick public reference or need to inspect earlier versions of a page. The Internet Archive Help Center provides guidance titled “Save Pages in the Wayback Machine” and “Archive whole web sites.” A capture should be treated as a reference copy, not proof that every page, image, download, or interaction has been preserved.
- Decide what to save. Identify the exact page or site scope. If you need more than one URL, identify the important pages rather than assuming that saving a homepage will capture the whole domain.
- Submit the page or site using the applicable Wayback Machine save guidance. The available process and results depend on the target and the Internet Archive’s capture behavior.
- Open the resulting archived page. Check the timestamp and navigate to the pages that matter to your purpose.
- Test important links and assets. Inspect images, stylesheets, downloads, redirects, and pages that rely on scripts. Record anything that is absent or does not replay.
The Internet Archive Help Center warns that “When a dynamic page contains forms, JavaScript, or other elements that require interaction with the originating host, the archive will not contain the original site’s functionality.” Its general guidance also says it collects publicly available pages and does not collect pages that require passwords or user-entered form submissions. If your evidence depends on a particular page state, capture and document that state separately rather than assuming a public snapshot contains it.
Create a controlled local copy with ArchiveBox

- Install ArchiveBox in an isolated environment. Follow its current project documentation for supported installation and configuration; the appropriate setup depends on your operating environment.
- Prepare seeds and boundaries. List the starting URLs, the crawl depth, paths or domains to include, and exclusions. Set a limit that matches your purpose so unrelated parts of a site are not unintentionally collected.
- Enable browser rendering for script-heavy pages. If a page’s content appears only after client-side rendering, include the browser-rendered capture path and verify it separately from ordinary HTML output.
- Retain WARC and raw files where preservation matters. Keep a PDF or screenshot as a visual reference, but do not treat that derivative as a replacement for the underlying captured resources.
- Record capture metadata. Preserve the capture time, source URL, scope, tool version, and errors alongside the files.
- Test representative pages offline. Include ordinary pages, a JavaScript-heavy page, downloads, and any content important to your use case. Document resources or behavior that fail.
- Back up the archive and restrict access by default. Keep another copy in a separate backup location. If sharing, use authentication and HTTPS, disable public indexing and public submissions by default, and make an access or takedown process explicit.
ArchiveBox documents two ways to publish a collection: use its built-in web server or export static HTML. Choosing to publish is different from keeping a private backup. Its publishing guidance cautions that private research or backup use can raise different issues from public rehosting for profit, and that public instances need a process for DMCA or GDPR requests. Consider the intended audience and jurisdiction before making an archive public.
When an institutional service makes more sense
Archive-It is oriented toward organizations that need to harvest and administer digital-content collections. It may be a better fit than running a local tool when the work involves organizational collection management and access controls. Before committing, confirm directly with the provider what the current service includes: collection scope, crawl limits, pricing, export rights, and any partnership terms. Those details are not established here and should not be assumed from the service category alone.
Why WARC matters for preservation
WARC is a preservation-oriented package for captured web resources. In the Digital Preservation Coalition’s description, a crawler begins with seed URLs and gathers HTML, images, and related resources into WARC files. This makes WARC more suitable as an underlying preservation record than a single PDF or screenshot, which shows a human-readable view but does not stand in for all the original captured resources.
For a preservation workflow, retain the original WARC, metadata, and the software or replay tool used. Preserve checksums when your workflow supports them so later handling can detect changes or corruption. A PDF or screenshot can sit beside the WARC as a convenient visual reference, not replace it.

Verify the capture instead of trusting the index
An archive index loading successfully does not prove that the site is complete. Check a representative sample against the scope you intended to capture and keep a record of the gaps.
- Open important pages offline and confirm the visible text and page structure.
- Inspect images, stylesheets, scripts, downloads, canonical links, and redirects.
- Test a JavaScript-heavy page separately from a static one.
- Confirm that capture timestamps and source URLs are recorded.
- Preserve or calculate checksums when your toolchain supports them.
- Write down missing pages, failed resources, inaccessible content, or interactions that cannot replay.
For repeat captures, use the same seed list, boundaries, and verification sample where possible. Keeping those decisions documented makes differences between capture rounds easier to interpret.
Legal, privacy, and access-control considerations
Copyright, privacy, terms of service, and takedown obligations vary by country and by intended use. A private research copy and a publicly accessible rehost are not the same publication decision. Minimize personal data, restrict private captures to appropriate users, honor removal requests where applicable, and obtain permission before publishing material you do not own. If your archive will be public, establish a way to receive and handle complaints or takedown requests before opening access.

The archived page opens, but images or styles are missing
Check whether the capture included the page’s supporting resources and whether their URLs or redirects were accessible at capture time. Inspect the resource paths in the archived page, recapture with the relevant assets in scope if possible, and document anything still missing.

It may depend on JavaScript or resources loaded after the initial HTML. For ArchiveBox, enable browser rendering and test a representative page again. For a Wayback capture, verify what replayed and what still depends on the originating host; a capture may not preserve the original functionality.

Login-only content is absent
The Wayback Machine’s general guidance says it does not collect pages requiring passwords or user-entered form submissions. For material you are authorized to preserve, choose a controlled workflow that meets your access and privacy requirements, and avoid exposing credentials or private data in a public archive.
The saved index works, but some URLs do not
Review seed URLs, depth, exclusions, redirects, and the actual capture errors. A homepage index is not evidence that every in-scope URL was collected. Narrow or adjust the crawl boundaries, recapture where appropriate, and keep a missing-page list.
A local archive is accidentally public
Review the ArchiveBox publication mode and server access configuration. Require authentication for shared access, disable public indexing and submissions by default, and put HTTPS in front of any shared server. If the archive was already exposed, restrict access and assess whether a takedown or privacy response is needed.

How often should I recapture a website?
Set the interval according to how quickly the site changes and why you are preserving it. Record that interval with your seed list so later captures can be compared consistently.
Can I make an archived site searchable?
Searchability depends on the archiving and replay setup you choose. Decide whether you need search across captured content before selecting a tool, and test it with representative pages rather than assuming a saved collection provides site-wide search.
Should I keep screenshots if I have a WARC?
A screenshot can make visual review faster, while WARC retains captured web resources in a preservation-oriented package. Keeping both can serve different purposes when the workflow and storage policy allow it.
