TSV means tab-separated values: a plain-text table in which each line is a row and a tab character separates columns. You can create one in a spreadsheet by exporting with Tab selected, or generate it reliably in Python with the standard csv module. This guide shows the format, a small example, spreadsheet and Python workflows, import checks, and the edge cases that cause broken columns.
What is a TSV file?
A TSV file stores table data as ordinary text. A line break separates records (rows), while one literal tab character (t) separates fields (columns). The first row may be a header, but a header is optional. What matters is that the producer and consumer agree on column order, delimiter, encoding, and rules for special characters.
A minimal file looks like this; each <TAB> marker represents one literal tab, not the five characters in the marker:

Save the text with a .tsv suffix when a receiving system uses the extension to identify the format. The same content can technically have another extension, but an explicit suffix avoids ambiguity.

TSV compared with CSV
CSV uses a comma (or, in some locales, another configured delimiter); TSV uses a tab. Tabs are less common in prose than commas, so TSV can reduce delimiter collisions in descriptions and addresses. Both formats still have implementation differences: quoting, escaping, line endings, encoding, and automatic type conversion are not identical across applications. RFC 4180 describes CSV rather than defining a universal TSV specification, so test the exact programs in your workflow.
How to create a TSV in a spreadsheet
Spreadsheet applications can export a table as text with Tab as the field delimiter. The labels vary by edition, but the sequence is consistent.
- Enter the data in rows and columns. Decide whether row one is a header.
- Check that every row has the intended number and order of columns.
- Choose the application’s Save As, Export, or Download command and select a text-delimited or CSV-style format.
- In the delimiter or field-separator dialog, select Tab and select the required character encoding, normally UTF-8.
- Save with a
.tsvextension if the destination expects it. - Open the resulting file in a plain-text editor and verify that columns are separated by tabs, or import it back with Tab selected.
LibreOffice Calc
In LibreOffice Calc, use File → Save As (or File → Export), choose a text/CSV format, and enable the option to edit filter settings if it is offered. In the export dialog, set the field separator to Tab, choose the character set (UTF-8 is a practical interoperable choice), and confirm. To open a TSV, use File → Open; when the Text Import dialog appears, select Separated by and check Tab. Inspect the preview before loading.
Other spreadsheet programs
Excel, browser spreadsheets, and other products use similar export dialogs, but defaults differ by version, operating-system locale, and application. Do not assume that a file named .csv is comma-delimited or that a successful-looking import preserved values. Verify dates, leading zeros, long identifiers, and non-ASCII characters after export and after re-import.

How to create a TSV with Python
Python’s standard library provides the csv module, including the excel_tab dialect for the usual Excel-generated tab-delimited format. Open files with newline="" so the module controls row endings, and specify an encoding explicitly.
Write a TSV file

Run the script with Python 3. It creates people.tsv in the current directory. If you need the rule to be unmistakable or want to control other dialect settings, use an explicit delimiter:

Read a TSV file

For a file with no header, process every row as data. For a file with a header, use csv.DictReader to access values by column name:

Validate column counts while reading

Validation catches shifted data before it reaches a database or report. Keep the same field order and count throughout the file.

Opening and importing TSV files
In a spreadsheet
- Use Open rather than pasting the entire file into one cell.
- When the text-import dialog appears, choose Separated and select Tab only.
- Set UTF-8 (or the encoding agreed with the producer).
- Review the preview for the expected number of columns and correctly rendered accents.
- Set sensitive columns such as postal codes or account IDs to Text when the application offers column-type controls.
In a text editor or command line
A text editor shows the raw tabs and line endings, which is useful for diagnosis. On Unix-like systems, cat -te people.tsv can make tabs visible as ^I; python -c "import csv,sys; print(list(csv.reader(open('people.tsv', newline='', encoding='utf-8'), delimiter='t')))" provides a quick parser check. These commands do not replace validation in the destination application.
Rules that keep TSV data interoperable
- Delimiter: Configure the importer for Tab, not comma, semicolon, or spaces.
- Encoding: Agree on UTF-8 when possible and verify names and symbols after import.
- Line endings: Windows, macOS, and Linux tools may write different newline conventions. Use a real TSV parser rather than splitting blindly on one platform’s line ending.
- Headers: Document whether the first row is a header and keep names stable.
- Field counts: Every record should have the same number of fields unless the receiving format explicitly permits optional columns.
- Tabs and newlines inside values: They are structural characters. A library may quote fields, but only if the consumer implements the same convention. Do not insert literal tabs or line breaks into values without an agreed escaping rule.
- Automatic conversion: Spreadsheets can turn dates into localized dates, remove leading zeros, round long numbers, or interpret formulas. Inspect the imported values and set columns to Text where exact strings are required.
Common failures and fixes
Everything appears in one column
The importer is probably using comma or another delimiter. Reopen the text-import dialog, choose Tab, and confirm the preview. If the producer used spaces instead of literal tabs, regenerate the file with a TSV writer.
Columns shift on a particular row
That row likely contains an unescaped tab, a newline, or a malformed quote. Inspect the raw line, then write the file through Python’s csv.writer (or the equivalent library) and validate field counts.
Accented characters are corrupted
The reader and writer disagree about encoding. Re-export as UTF-8 and select UTF-8 explicitly during import. Do not fix the display by changing random fonts; encoding must match the bytes.

Zeros or dates changed
This is spreadsheet type conversion, not a TSV delimiter problem. Import the affected columns as Text, or use a programming-language parser that preserves strings before converting only the fields you intend to convert.
The file has blank or extra lines
Check the producer’s newline handling and whether an editor appended a final empty record. Python’s newline="" setting and a standard parser avoid many platform-specific newline issues; still inspect the target application’s interpretation.
Performance, reliability, and security considerations
TSV is lightweight and streams naturally: Python can iterate one row at a time instead of loading a large file into memory. For very large transfers, write and read incrementally, validate counts as you go, and agree on compression separately if storage or network size matters. TSV has no built-in schema, types, authentication, or encryption. Use a secure transport and access controls for sensitive data, and publish a column definition alongside the file when consumers need unambiguous types.
Before handing off a file, perform this checklist:
- Open it as plain text and confirm literal tab separators.
- Check the header decision, column order, and row counts.
- Test non-ASCII text, empty fields, leading zeros, and long identifiers.
- Try a representative import in the actual destination application.
- Confirm how the destination handles quotes, embedded tabs, newlines, and malformed rows.

FAQ
Does a TSV file require a header row?
No. A header is optional; document the column meanings when you omit it.
Can I rename a CSV file to TSV?
Only if its fields are actually separated by tabs. Renaming changes the label, not the content.
Should I use TSV for nested or richly typed data?
TSV is best for flat rows and columns. Use a format with an explicit schema when you need nested structures, typed values, or reliable metadata.
