Short answer: You can search and save Facebook group discussions manually, but you should not automatically collect posts merely because a group is public. Meta distinguishes public visibility from permission to scrape. For a repeatable system, first verify that Meta currently documents an authorized product or permission for your exact group, account, geography and purpose. If it does not, limit your work to Facebook’s own search and exports available to you, or obtain written permission from the relevant rights holders.
Decide whether you need search or automated collection
“Scraping” can mean two very different activities:
- Manual discovery: finding conversations for your own reading, notes or a one-off report.
- Automated collection: repeatedly downloading posts, comments, author data or media into a database or monitoring system.
The first is supported by Facebook’s normal interface. The second raises permission, privacy, terms-of-service and technical issues. Meta’s stated position is direct: “Using automation to get data from Facebook without our permission is a violation of our terms.” Public visibility does not change that boundary.
Public and private groups are not equivalent

Private-group data can include sensitive personal information even when a member shares it for a limited community purpose. Minimize what you retain, document the lawful purpose, and avoid redistributing copied posts or identifying details.

Best method for one-off research: Facebook’s built-in search
For an individual investigation, use the native Groups search rather than a browser scraper.
- Sign in to Facebook and open Groups.
- Open the target group and use its search field, or use the broader Groups Search page.
- Start with distinctive words, phrases, product names, dates or error messages from the question you are investigating.
- Try variants: singular and plural forms, abbreviations, spelling differences and related concepts.
- Open the original discussion and record its date, surrounding replies and any edits instead of copying an isolated sentence.
- Save only the minimum notes needed for your stated purpose. Do not publish names, profile links or screenshots without a legitimate reason and appropriate permission.
Meta’s April 21, 2026 engineering description says Groups Search combines two retrieval paths: a lexical path for exact or close terms and a semantic path for conceptually related posts. The system merges those results for ranking. That can surface a useful discussion whose wording differs from your query, but it does not guarantee complete retrieval or provide an export API.
Search tactics that improve recall
- Search a technical term and then a plain-language description of the same issue.
- Search distinctive phrases in quotation marks, then repeat without quotation marks.
- Search the group first, then compare results with Facebook’s broader Groups Search.
- Check older result pages and sort by recent activity when the interface offers that option.
- Read replies: the accepted solution or correction may be in a comment rather than the original post.
Why old Facebook Groups API tutorials are risky
Meta described a Groups API in a 2018 platform update. At that time, third-party apps using it needed Facebook approval and approval from a group administrator. The update also described restrictions on member lists and on identifying who authored a post unless the member allowed that access. Those statements are historical and should not be treated as evidence that the same endpoints work today.

A third-party mirror of Meta’s Graph API v19.0 changelog reported that publish_to_groups, groups_access_member_info and Groups API capabilities were deprecated and scheduled for removal on April 22, 2024. Because the current Meta developer page was not available for direct verification here, treat that date as a reported changelog detail, not as a substitute for current documentation. Before writing code, check Meta for Developers for the exact product, permission and version that applies to your use case.
If you need ongoing monitoring, verify authorization first
Before selecting an integration, write down:
- The group IDs and whether each group is public or private.
- The Facebook account and app that would access the data.
- The fields required: post text, comments, timestamps, media or author information.
- The purpose, retention period, users who will see the data and countries involved.
- Whether the group administrator and every relevant data subject have provided permission where required.
Then verify in current Meta documentation that an approved product covers all of those conditions. Ask Meta or the provider for the current permission name, review process, rate limits, deletion obligations and supported API version. A vendor’s ability to return HTML is not proof that Meta authorizes the activity.
Do not bypass controls
Do not disguise automation, rotate accounts to evade limits, defeat CAPTCHAs, use stolen cookies, join private groups without authorization or instruct a tool to imitate human behavior. Meta says it may respond to unauthorized scraping with rate and data limits, activity-pattern detection, account disabling, cease-and-desist letters, litigation and requests to hosting providers to remove scraped datasets. Those are Meta’s policy and enforcement statements, not legal advice; obtain advice for your jurisdiction and project.

Data-handling checklist for permitted projects
- Collect only fields necessary for the documented purpose.
- Separate post content from account credentials and session tokens.
- Encrypt data in transit and at rest, and restrict internal access.
- Set a deletion schedule and honor removal requests where applicable.
- Keep provenance: group, URL, retrieval time and the permission basis.
- Do not infer sensitive traits or publish member identities unnecessarily.
- Test with a small, consented sample before any recurring job.
Common failure modes and safe fixes
“The tutorial’s endpoint returns an error”
The tutorial may target a removed API version or permission. Check the current Meta developer documentation and app review status; do not work around the error with undocumented endpoints.
“I can see the post in a browser, but my program gets a login page”
Visibility in your logged-in session does not grant programmatic access. Confirm that your account, app and group are authorized. Never copy session cookies into an untrusted scraper.

Search indexes, ranking, privacy settings, deleted posts and pagination can all limit what you see. Treat native search as discovery, not a completeness guarantee. Record the query and date, and report the scope honestly.

“A third-party service promises public-group scraping”
Ask for written evidence of its authorization, data fields, retention, security controls and deletion process. If it cannot document those points, do not assume that public pages make the service compliant.
“My account was restricted”
Stop automated requests, secure the account, review Meta’s notices and use the official appeal or support route. Do not create replacement accounts to continue the same activity.
