Choose Apify when you need to publish scraper or automation code that runs in the cloud. Its Actor model combines structured input, cloud execution, stored results, API access, scheduling, and Store publishing. Choose RapidAPI when you already operate a hosted API and want to list it with marketplace pricing, quotas, and overage controls. The platforms overlap in distribution and monetization, but they solve different parts of the publishing problem.
This is a comparison of documented product fit, not a head-to-head test of earnings, reliability, or marketplace conversion. Platform rules change; check the linked documentation before setting prices or committing to either model.
RapidAPI vs. Apify at a glance
| Question | RapidAPI | Apify |
|---|---|---|
| What are you publishing? | An API listing with a pricing plan. RapidAPI’s provider documentation focuses on plan configuration, quotas, and overages. | An Actor: code that accepts structured JSON input, performs a task, and stores results on Apify. |
| Who supplies the working product? | You need an API that is ready to list. Hosting and operating requirements must be checked for your particular API; monetization documentation does not establish that RapidAPI builds or runs your scraper. | You supply Actor code; cloud execution is part of Apify’s documented Actor model. |
| How can users invoke it? | Through the API offering you list. Confirm its hosting and operating arrangements separately. | Manually, through the API, or on a schedule. |
| How can you charge? | Free, pay per use, freemium, or paid plans, with request quotas and overages. | Store Actors can use pay-per-event or pay-per-usage pricing, subject to current terms. |
| Best fit | A publisher with an existing hosted API seeking plan-based marketplace distribution. | A publisher who wants a managed execution and publishing path for scraping, extraction, or automation code. |
The key distinction is not simply which marketplace is larger. It is whether your main job is to operate an API and sell access to it, or to package and run a task as an Actor. RapidAPI’s provider documentation describes monetization controls; Apify’s documentation describes both the Actor workflow and Store publishing. RapidAPI’s monetization documentation and Apify’s getting-started documentation establish those respective product models.
What publishing on RapidAPI involves
RapidAPI’s provider documentation presents monetization as configuring a plan for an API you list. It identifies four plan categories: free, pay per use, freemium, and paid. A plan can define request limits and overages, including monthly or daily quotas, hard limits, and settings that can be changed or disabled. This gives an API publisher controls over how access is priced and capped.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Plan types and important limits
- Free: useful for offering access without charging through RapidAPI. The documentation states that free APIs cannot collect payment through RapidAPI and describes a request limit for free plans.
- Pay per use: appropriate when charges are tied to usage rather than a recurring paid allowance.
- Freemium: combines a free level with paid access.
- Paid: offers access under a paid plan.
The same documentation states that for non-free plans above 500,000 requests per month, a minimum price condition of $0.00003 applies to each request above that threshold. Treat this as a current platform rule only after confirming it on RapidAPI’s documentation: quotas, pricing conditions, and plan mechanics may change. The number is about RapidAPI plan configuration, not a recommendation for what your API should charge.
What RapidAPI’s documentation does not establish
Monetization controls do not, by themselves, answer who will host, scale, secure, or operate your API. The official monetization material assumes that an API is available to list; evaluate the hosting and operational requirements of your actual service separately. Apify’s comparison characterizes RapidAPI as a marketplace where providers supply and host their APIs, but that is Apify’s vendor-authored characterization rather than an independent audit. Do not assume a marketplace listing makes scraper execution, proxy management, or site access work automatically.
What publishing an Apify Actor involves
Apify describes itself as a cloud platform for web scraping, data extraction, and automation. An Actor takes structured JSON input, performs a job, and stores results on the platform. You can start an Actor manually, call it through the API, or schedule it. Public Actors can appear in Apify Store and may be free or paid. This makes Apify the closer fit when the product you are publishing is executable scraper or automation code rather than just API access to a service you already operate.

Actor workflow
- Package the task as an Actor. Define what the code does and the structured JSON input it accepts. Design the output and task behavior around the user’s intended job.
- Choose how it will run. Apify documents manual starts, API calls, and scheduled runs. Pick the invocation style that matches whether a user, another system, or a recurring process initiates work.
- Decide whether to publish publicly. Public Actors can be listed in Apify Store; the listing is the distribution unit, unlike RapidAPI’s API listing and plan.
- Set a pricing model if charging. Apify currently documents pay per event and pay per usage for paid Store Actors. Read the current terms and pricing documentation before deciding how usage or events will be measured.
- Prepare the Store presentation. Apify’s help article recommends a clear description, comprehensive README, and logo or icon. It says a Store page is created after publishing; consult the current publishing guidance for the exact interface and requirements.
Actor monetization and volatile terms
With pay per event, the developer defines events triggered by Actor code and chooses whether platform usage costs are passed to users. Apify also documents agentic payments for eligible Actors, with conditions including pay-per-event pricing, limited permissions, and completed identity verification. Eligibility and payment rules are platform details that can change; check Apify’s Actor monetization documentation for the current requirements.

These are dated commercial terms, not guaranteed enduring terms. Confirm the current agreement and payout documentation before forecasting income or setting a price. How to choose for your project
Choose Apify if the scraper itself is the product
- Your users need to submit parameters to a reusable scraping or automation task.
- You want cloud execution to be part of the platform model, rather than treating distribution as the only need.
- Stored results, API invocation, or scheduled runs are central to the product.
- You want to publish that task as an Actor in a Store and consider event- or usage-based charging.
This does not mean every scraping problem will run successfully without additional engineering. Implementation, workload, site behavior, and compliance considerations remain specific to your use case.

Choose RapidAPI if you already have an API to sell
- Your API is built and operated, and your main need is a marketplace listing and monetization plan.
- You want to compare free, usage-priced, freemium, or paid access structures.
- You need request quotas or overage controls as part of the plan design.
Do not select RapidAPI on the assumption that it supplies the scraper runtime. Confirm who is responsible for serving requests, scaling, security, and the scraping behavior behind your endpoint.
Consider a hybrid architecture only when it solves a real separation
A scraper can be packaged as an execution product while an API is also exposed for customers who need a conventional endpoint, but using two platforms adds operational and commercial decisions. The cited documentation establishes each product’s model; it does not establish a standard integration path or guarantee that dual-publishing improves sales. Before building both, write down which component runs the job, where results live, which interface the customer pays for, and how usage is accounted for. If those answers are not distinct, begin with the platform whose core model best matches the product.

Apify’s comparison article, published January 19, 2026, positions RapidAPI as a broad API marketplace and Apify as scraping infrastructure with a focused Store. It also characterizes RapidAPI as requiring providers to manage hosting and scraper operations. These are claims made by Apify, a vendor in the comparison, not neutral findings from independent marketplace measurement. The cited materials do not provide verified comparative conversion rates, typical earnings, or independent load-test results, so they cannot establish which marketplace will bring more customers or deliver greater reliability for your workload.

The same Apify article quotes one individual, Guillaume Lancrenon, identified there as CTO and CPO of getcockpit.io, saying he went from “something like $500 a month” on other side projects to more than $2,000 from Apify Store. That is a vendor-published testimonial about one person’s experience, not a representative result, audited earnings comparison, or forecast for a new publisher. Use it as an anecdote, not a basis for revenue projections. The comparison is available at Apify’s RapidAPI vs. Apify article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Publishing checklist before you commit
- Specify the deliverable: Is it an endpoint you already operate, or a task users need executed in the cloud?
- Map operating responsibility: Identify who owns hosting, scaling, credentials, error handling, and ongoing maintenance.
- Model usage: Estimate how a customer action maps to an API request, Actor run, event, or usage charge. Do not assume the pricing units are interchangeable.
- Set limits deliberately: For RapidAPI, check the current plan quota and overage behavior. For Apify, check current Store pricing rules and which usage costs may be passed through.
- Review marketplace terms: Verify present publishing, eligibility, payment, and payout requirements directly with the platform.
- Test the customer path: Ensure a buyer can understand inputs, outputs, expected runtime, and failure handling before you promote a listing.
- Validate legal and site constraints: Scraping permission, privacy, terms of service, and data handling depend on the target sites, data, and jurisdiction; marketplace availability is not a legal determination.
Screenshot alternative for website capture workflows
RapidAPI and Apify are not interchangeable with a screenshot API: they address API monetization and cloud task execution. If your specific task is to capture clean website screenshots rather than publish a general scraper, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the response identifying the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe (replace the URL with the page you need):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API details. Start with 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Common decision mistakes
- Picking a marketplace before defining the product: Decide whether you are selling a hosted API or an executable scraping task first.
- Treating a listing as infrastructure: RapidAPI monetization documentation is not evidence that your API will be hosted or your scraper executed by the marketplace.
- Assuming platform features prove site access: Apify documents cloud execution, but successful scraping, anti-blocking results, compliance, and scaling outcomes depend on the particular implementation and workload.
- Forecasting income from one quote: A single testimonial does not establish typical publisher earnings or relative marketplace performance.
- Pricing from stale rules: Verify quotas, overage terms, Actor monetization eligibility, and payout conditions at the time you publish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I publish the same scraper on both platforms?
The cited product documentation does not establish a universal cross-publishing workflow or any exclusivity rule. Check the current terms for each platform and determine whether you have a distinct API service and Actor product before maintaining both listings.
Does either platform guarantee customers or earnings?
No such guarantee is established in the cited documentation. Marketplace positioning and an individual earnings testimonial are not evidence of typical sales or a forecast for your project.
