A website metadata API fetches a URL and returns structured details—such as its title, description, preview image and canonical URL—that your application can use to build a link preview. For reliable results, check for a provider’s oEmbed support first, then fall back to Open Graph, Twitter Card and ordinary HTML metadata; normalize the results, record where each value came from, and treat all fetched content as untrusted.

What a website metadata API returns

A metadata API accepts a public URL, retrieves the page and parses its markup. Instead of making every client implement HTML parsing and provider-specific rules, it returns fields in a predictable JSON structure. Depending on the service, that may include a normalized title, description, image, favicon and canonical URL, along with raw Open Graph and Twitter Card fields or safety tags. LinkMetadata documents this kind of normalized and raw output in its documentation and service overview.

Metadata is a best-effort description supplied by the site, not an authoritative record of the page. A title can be absent; a description may be stale; and different metadata fields can contradict one another. A robust client should preserve the original values and their provenance instead of silently pretending every page supplied one definitive answer.

Open Graph and oEmbed are different

Open Graph describes a page

Open Graph tags are markup publishers place on a page to describe it to services that display preview cards. A typical page can specify a title, description, image and canonical URL. Twitter Card tags and ordinary HTML elements may offer similar information. These tags are page-authored metadata: they do not, by themselves, provide an interactive embed.

oEmbed asks a provider for embed data

oEmbed is an HTTP protocol. A consumer asks a supporting provider for structured information about a URL. Depending on the provider and content, the response can represent a photo, video, rich embed or metadata-only link. A page can advertise an oEmbed endpoint with a link element whose type is application/json+oembed. Spotify’s documentation describes that discovery mechanism and responses containing fields such as a title, thumbnail and embed code: Spotify oEmbed documentation. The protocol was introduced in 2008, according to oembed.org.

The distinction matters: Open Graph is metadata in a page, while oEmbed is a provider response that may contain embed-ready HTML. Use metadata for a consistent preview card; use provider output only when an actual embed is needed and your application has a defined policy for trusting and rendering that HTML.

How to extract metadata from a URL

A useful extractor has a defined fallback order. OpenGraph.io documents a sequence that checks native providers, discovers oEmbed where available, then falls back to Open Graph extraction: OpenGraph.io API documentation. The following implementation outline applies whether you build the service yourself or use a hosted API.

  1. Validate the submitted URL. Accept only schemes you intend to support, generally HTTP and HTTPS. Reject credentials embedded in the URL and enforce network egress controls so a user cannot use your service to reach internal or private addresses.
  2. Check your provider registry. If the URL matches a provider with native oEmbed support, use its documented endpoint and response rules.
  3. Look for oEmbed discovery. If no registry entry applies, fetch the page and inspect its markup for an oEmbed discovery link. Validate the discovered endpoint before requesting it; do not assume that a page-provided URL is safe.
  4. Fall back to page metadata. If oEmbed is missing or unusable, inspect Open Graph tags, Twitter Card tags and ordinary HTML elements. Use structured metadata only where your parser supports it and can retain provenance.
  5. Normalize without erasing evidence. Map extracted values into stable fields such as title, description, image, favicon and canonical_url, but retain raw fields and a source label for each normalized value.
  6. Return fetch context and cache deliberately. Where possible, expose the final URL after redirects, response status, host and failure reason. Apply a freshness policy appropriate to your use case rather than treating cached metadata as permanently current.

Hosted metadata API options

Two services documented in the available product materials illustrate different priorities. OpenGraph.io documents a broad extraction workflow with proxy, rendering and retry controls; LinkMetadata documents normalized preview fields and safety tags. They are not interchangeable with an image screenshot API: metadata services return page information, while screenshot services capture rendered visual output.

When a screenshot API is the better fit

A metadata API answers “what information describes this URL?” A screenshot API answers “what does this page look like when rendered?” If the product requirement is a visual thumbnail, metadata alone cannot guarantee a useful result: the image tag may be missing, unsuitable or stale. ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first when you need the rendered page itself: it removes cookie banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. See ScreenshotNeo.

Or skip the browser setup

For a rendered screenshot rather than extracted metadata, ScreenshotNeo takes one GET request. The following cURL example saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you want to capture and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

Implementation choices that determine result quality

Decide how much rendering you need

Static HTML parsing is simpler and generally avoids the delay and operational burden of running a browser. It can miss metadata added only after JavaScript executes. A rendered fetch can improve coverage for those pages, but increases latency and the resources needed per request. Use rendering as a measured fallback rather than assuming every URL needs a browser.

Keep redirects and status visible

A URL can redirect to another page, fail with an HTTP error, or return a page that lacks useful tags. Keep the requested URL and final URL distinct, and preserve status and failure context in your result. OpenGraph.io’s Site API documents request information including redirects, host and response code: Site API documentation. This lets an application distinguish “no description tag” from “the fetch never succeeded.”

Normalize with field-level provenance

Choose a consistent precedence policy—for example, prefer a usable Open Graph title over a generic document title—but make the policy explicit. Store both the normalized value and the raw source field. If an image comes from an Open Graph tag while a title comes from the HTML document title, your downstream interface can still explain or troubleshoot that combination. Do not collapse missing data, failed retrieval and an intentionally empty field into the same null-like outcome unless your API also communicates the reason.

Cache with freshness in mind

Preview metadata usually does not need to be fetched for every page view. Cache by a validated canonical request key and define how long the result remains fresh. Shorter freshness windows reduce the time users see outdated titles or images; longer ones reduce repeat requests and latency. Expose or document cache behavior so callers can decide whether a stale preview is acceptable. OpenGraph.io documents cache controls as part of its Site API: Site API documentation.

Security and trust boundaries

Metadata extraction turns user-supplied URLs and publisher-supplied content into inputs to your system. Both deserve defensive handling.

  • Prevent server-side request forgery. Resolve hostnames and block loopback, private, link-local and otherwise prohibited destinations. Recheck after redirects and DNS resolution; a public-looking URL can redirect to an internal address.
  • Limit resource use. Set timeouts, response-size limits, redirect limits and concurrency controls. Browser rendering and proxying broaden the abuse surface and consume more resources than parsing a small static response.
  • Escape extracted strings. Titles, descriptions and URLs are untrusted text. Escape them for the output context; do not place raw metadata into HTML, script, CSS or an attribute without the appropriate encoding.
  • Do not trust embed HTML by default. oEmbed may return provider HTML. If you render it, use a provider allowlist, a clear trust policy and appropriate sanitization or isolation rather than inserting arbitrary returned markup.
  • Validate returned links and images. Treat image URLs and canonical URLs as untrusted values too. Apply your scheme, host and display policies before linking to or fetching them.
  • Respect service controls. Authenticate appropriately, obey documented rate limits and avoid exposing API credentials in client-side code if the provider expects server-side use.

Troubleshooting missing or incorrect previews

The page has no Open Graph tags

Try Twitter Card tags and ordinary HTML metadata such as the document title and description. If the provider supports oEmbed, use discovery or its registered endpoint before the generic metadata fallback. Return partial results with their provenance rather than inventing a description.

The API returns empty or stale fields

Check the final URL after redirects, response status and cache age. The page may genuinely omit a field, serve different markup to automated requests, or have a cached response older than the publisher’s current tags. Refresh according to your freshness policy and compare raw fields with normalized output.

A JavaScript-driven page is incomplete

Determine whether the needed metadata exists in the initial HTML. If it is inserted only after client-side execution, use a rendering-capable path where available, with a timeout and resource limits. Rendering can improve coverage but costs additional time and infrastructure, so keep it bounded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

oEmbed discovery fails

Verify the advertised endpoint, response type and response status, and ensure the endpoint itself passes URL and network checks. Discovery markup can be malformed, inaccessible or point to a resource that no longer responds. Continue to metadata fallback when it cannot be used.

Requests are throttled

Check your request rate and per-IP behavior. LinkMetadata documents a public endpoint limit of 20 requests per 10 seconds per IP; callers should pace traffic accordingly and handle throttling responses without retrying in a tight loop. Confirm current limits in the provider documentation before production use: LinkMetadata documentation.

Choosing an approach

  • Choose a hosted metadata API when you need structured fields and want to avoid maintaining fetch, parsing and provider-specific logic.
  • Choose an API with documented oEmbed discovery and fallback when provider-native embeds and generic page previews both matter.
  • Favor normalized fields and safety tags when your primary need is a consistent preview schema and downstream moderation signals.
  • Build your own extractor when you need control over URL policy, field precedence, cache semantics and operational behavior—and can maintain the security boundaries.
  • Use a screenshot API when the requirement is a rendered visual capture, not a title, description or embed record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a metadata API guarantee that every URL has a preview image?

No. A publisher may omit image metadata, and extraction cannot guarantee that an available image is current or suitable.

Does oEmbed replace Open Graph?

No. oEmbed is a provider request/response protocol and may return embed data; Open Graph is page markup describing content. A robust system can use both with a fallback policy.
