Configure an <iframe> by choosing the resource (src or srcdoc), naming it for screen readers, sizing it responsively, and granting only the permissions and sandbox capabilities it needs. Then decide whether loading and referrer policies fit your performance and privacy requirements.
What an iframe actually does
An iframe creates a separate browsing context inside your page. The src attribute navigates that context to a remote resource. Alternatively, srcdoc supplies inline HTML and takes precedence over src. Relative URLs inside srcdoc resolve against the embedding page’s URL, not an assumed location for the inline markup.
Use the HTML Standard’s iframe definition and MDN’s iframe reference when a provider’s embed requirements conflict with a default.
A sound starting configuration

</iframe>This is a starting point, not a universal recipe. Confirm the provider’s required capabilities and test the exact content. The dimensions are CSS pixels. If you omit them, MDN documents defaults of 300 pixels wide by 150 pixels high.

Iframe attributes and when to use them

Build the embed step by step
1. Choose the source
For a website, form, video, or widget, put its URL in src. If you need to provide markup directly, use srcdoc; do not assume a simultaneous src fallback will be displayed because srcdoc wins. Sanitize or isolate any user-controlled srcdoc.
2. Make it identifiable and usable
Write a specific title such as title="Checkout form", rather than repeating “iframe.” Set a useful initial width and height, then use CSS for the layout:

}Keep a visible link to the original resource when practical. An iframe has no built-in fallback content; MDN specifically recommends an external link for PDF access.

3. Apply the narrowest sandbox
An empty sandbox attribute is the most restrictive starting point. Add only the tokens the application needs—for example, allow-forms for form submission or allow-scripts for scripts.

allow-scriptsandallow-same-originfor same-origin content. MDN warns that such a frame can use JavaScript to remove its sandbox and reload without those restrictions. - If a sandboxed page opens a new tab or window, restrictions can carry over.
allow-popups-to-escape-sandboxis needed when that new context must escape them. - Sandboxing can stop a browser’s built-in PDF viewer from loading, so it is not a portable way to restrict native PDF previews.
- For potentially malicious content, use a different domain from the main site as recommended by MDN’s embedding guidance. A sandbox does not protect people who visit that content directly.
4. Grant browser features with allow
Use an allow value when the frame needs a controlled feature or origin, for example:

></iframe>The embedding document’s Permissions-Policy header still governs what is possible. The iframe attribute can narrow access but cannot grant a feature denied by the parent. allowfullscreen is legacy syntax; MDN describes it as equivalent to allow="fullscreen *". Prefer current policy syntax where your browser support permits it. The HTML Standard notes that allow and allowfullscreen affect the active embedded document when it navigates; changing them after load does not update that already-loaded document.

5. Choose loading behavior
loading="eager" loads normally. loading="lazy" asks the browser to defer an offscreen frame until it is near the viewport, reducing initial network work for embeds below the fold. Lazy loading is deferred only when JavaScript is enabled, an anti-tracking measure documented by MDN. Keep above-the-fold interactive content eager if delaying it harms the experience.
6. Limit referrer disclosure
The documented default, strict-origin-when-cross-origin, sends the full URL for same-origin requests, only the origin for secure cross-origin requests, and no referrer when navigating from HTTPS to HTTP. Use no-referrer when the destination should receive no referrer at all. Avoid unsafe-url when exposing a path or query string to a less-secure destination would disclose information.

Most sites should size the iframe or its wrapper with CSS rather than hard-code a single desktop width. The embedded document can also opt into responsive sizing through the frame-sizing CSS property. Browser support may vary because this is newer behavior, so verify compatibility with the browsers your site supports before relying on it in production.

Security, performance, and privacy checks
- Security: list the exact capabilities the provider needs and keep every other sandbox restriction.
- Permissions: check both the iframe’s
allowvalue and the parentPermissions-Policyheader. - Performance: each frame consumes memory and other resources; remove unnecessary frames and lazy-load those that start offscreen.
- Privacy: select a referrer policy deliberately, especially when URLs contain paths or query parameters.
- Accessibility: provide a meaningful title, usable dimensions, keyboard-accessible content, and an external link when the embedded resource may not work.
- Compatibility: test the selected attributes in the browser versions and embed provider you support.
Why an iframe can appear broken
The frame is blank or shows the wrong page
Check whether srcdoc is present: it overrides src. Also verify the URL, provider restrictions, and whether the destination permits framing. Cross-origin content can be displayed while remaining inaccessible to your page’s scripts.
Scripts or forms do nothing
Review the sandbox tokens. Add only the needed capability, such as allow-scripts or allow-forms, and confirm the parent Permissions Policy does not deny the feature.
Fullscreen, camera, or microphone fails
Check the iframe’s allow declaration, the parent Permissions-Policy header, and the provider’s own permission requirements. Changing the attribute after the document has loaded does not retroactively update that document.

Load events give a false sense of success
Do not use an iframe’s load event as proof that the resource succeeded. Browsers suppress iframe error events for security reasons and may fire load even when the content failed. For intentional cross-origin communication, use postMessage and validate the sender’s origin.
