Aternos is a free, on-demand Minecraft server hosting service that lets players create and manage Java or Bedrock multiplayer servers from a web panel. The server is not permanently online: Aternos may queue startup, stops an empty server, restricts custom file uploads, and can delete inactive servers.
Aternos hosts the multiplayer server; every player still needs a legitimate, compatible Minecraft client and the correct connection details. Aternos is not a Minecraft launcher, Minecraft account, single-player world, VPN, LAN-sharing tool, or permanent dedicated server.
The central trade-off is simple: Aternos removes the hosting bill by sharing capacity and limiting when and how servers run. That makes Aternos useful for small groups that play occasionally, but less suitable for public communities, always-online worlds, or projects requiring complete file access.
Key takeaways
- Aternos is free Minecraft hosting funded exclusively by advertising, according to Aternos GmbH.
- Aternos supports Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, but Java–Bedrock crossplay requires compatible Geyser configuration rather than working automatically.
- Aternos servers stop automatically when the last player leaves, so Aternos is not 24/7 hosting.
- Aternos may place a server in a startup queue when demand is high, and the player must confirm the launch near the front of the queue.
- Aternos supports selected mods, plugins, modpacks, datapacks, resource packs, and Bedrock add-ons, but it does not provide unrestricted FTP or arbitrary custom plugin and mod uploads.
- Aternos servers that are not started for a long period, typically around three months, may be deleted, so important worlds need independent backups.
What does Aternos provide?
Aternos provides hosted Minecraft multiplayer servers. Instead of installing and operating Minecraft server software on a home computer, the server owner creates a server through Aternos’ browser-based control panel, selects supported server software, changes settings, and starts the server when the group wants to play.
The official Aternos company page describes Aternos as a free service for creating and running Minecraft servers. Aternos supports server setups for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, with available options depending on the edition, Minecraft version, and selected server software.
Once the server is online, the owner gives friends the server address shown in the Aternos panel. Players connect from compatible Minecraft clients just as they would to another multiplayer server. The server owner normally needs to start the server before friends can join.
How is Aternos different from Minecraft itself?
Aternos is a hosting service, not the game that players use to connect. The distinction matters because creating an Aternos server does not provide Minecraft accounts or Minecraft copies.
| Product or setup | What it does | What Aternos does instead |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft client or launcher | Lets a player install and play Minecraft. | Aternos does not replace the client or launcher. |
| Minecraft account | Provides the player identity used to access Minecraft services. | Aternos requires its own management account and does not replace a Minecraft account. |
| Local single-player world | Runs primarily on one player’s device. | Aternos hosts a multiplayer server remotely. |
| VPN or LAN-sharing tool | Connects devices or networks to make local hosting possible. | Aternos provides hosted server infrastructure instead of extending a home LAN. |
| Permanent dedicated server | Runs continuously with dedicated resources and broad administrative control. | Aternos is shared, on-demand hosting with queues, automatic shutdown, and file restrictions. |
Why is Aternos free?
Aternos is free because Aternos GmbH says the service is financed exclusively through advertising. The free model also depends on controlling resource use: empty servers stop automatically, startup requests can be queued, and users cannot freely upload arbitrary server files.
Those restrictions are part of the operating model rather than minor inconveniences. Automatic shutdown prevents an unused server from consuming resources indefinitely. Queueing allocates finite capacity among users when demand is high. Aternos says its upload restrictions also help reduce abuse, prevent attempts to bypass automatic shutdown, and lower the risk posed by malicious server files.
As of August 18, 2026, Aternos GmbH reports more than 125 million registered users. That figure is a company-reported figure and was not independently audited in the research reviewed for this article; it should not be treated as an independent market-ranking statistic.
Does Aternos support Java and Bedrock Edition?
Aternos supports Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition server setups, but the two editions are not automatically interchangeable. The correct server type, client edition, version, software, address, and—in some cases—port must match.
| Edition or connection | Typical players | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition server | Windows, macOS, and Linux Java players | Can use supported software such as Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, and selected modpacks. |
| Bedrock Edition server | Windows Bedrock, Android, iOS, and potentially console players | Uses Bedrock server software and add-ons where supported. Console connection options can have platform-specific limitations. |
| Java server with Bedrock players | Mixed Java and Bedrock groups | Requires Geyser and compatible configuration; Bedrock players need the appropriate address and port. |
Windows players need to distinguish the Java and Bedrock editions installed on their devices. Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch players may face additional custom-server, Microsoft-account privacy, or platform-specific barriers. A claim that “Aternos works on every console” would be too broad.

How does Java–Bedrock crossplay work on Aternos?
Java–Bedrock crossplay on Aternos generally works by adding Geyser to a Java server. Geyser translates the connection so Bedrock clients can join a Java server, but crossplay depends on compatible versions and correct connection details.
The official Aternos Geyser guide identifies several practical requirements and failure points:
- The Geyser version must be compatible with the Java server and Minecraft version.
- Bedrock players need the correct address and port, not merely the Java connection address.
- Geyser must be installed correctly and remain running.
- Geyser may need an update after a Bedrock release.
- Microsoft-account multiplayer and privacy settings can prevent a console or Bedrock player from connecting.
- Aternos states that Geyser and a voice-chat mod cannot share the same server because both require a UDP port while Aternos provides one port per server.
Geyser crossplay is therefore a supported configuration, not proof that every Java mod, Bedrock add-on, device, or console will work together.
How do you create an Aternos server?
As verified against Aternos’ official setup instructions on August 18, 2026, the basic creation path is:
- Go to aternos.org.
- Click Play.
- Create an Aternos account or sign in.
- Select Create a server.
- Choose Java or Bedrock Edition.
- Set the server name and Message of the Day.
- Click Create.
- Press Start.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA when Aternos displays it.
- Copy the server address shown in the Aternos panel.
- Open Minecraft, add or select the server, enter the address, and join.
The official Aternos server-creation guide contains the current interface flow. Button labels and panel layout can change, so a screen may look slightly different after a future update.
What happens when you start an Aternos server?
An Aternos server either starts immediately or enters a queue, depending on current demand and available capacity. Aternos does not promise a fixed startup time.
- Aternos shows a queue position and estimated waiting time if capacity is full.
- The position changes as other server requests are processed.
- Near the front, Aternos asks the user to confirm the start.
- Missing the confirmation removes the user from the queue.
- After confirmation, the server normally starts within a few minutes according to Aternos’ queue documentation.
- Players connect using the address displayed after the server is online.
The Aternos queue explanation is important because a queue is conditional, not present on every launch. Leaving the queue also means losing the current position.

Is Aternos available 24/7?
No. Aternos is not always-on 24/7 hosting. The server automatically stops when the last player leaves. Aternos says there is no fixed playtime limit while players remain active, but the server is not intended to remain online while nobody is playing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The Aternos 24/7 hosting policy prohibits bots, scripts, or other methods intended to bypass automatic shutdown. Attempts to simulate activity can lead to restrictions or suspension. Friends who want to play must normally coordinate with the server owner or another person who has permission to start the server.
What are Aternos’ main limitations?
Aternos’ limitations are the practical price of free, shared hosting. The following table summarizes the restrictions most likely to affect a small Minecraft group.
| Aternos feature | What you can expect | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No hosting fee; Aternos says advertising funds the service. | Good for a zero-budget server, with advertising as part of the model. |
| Startup | A queue can appear when demand exceeds available capacity. | Play sessions may not begin immediately. |
| Availability | The server stops when the last player leaves. | Friends cannot join whenever they want unless someone starts the server. |
| Playtime | No fixed playtime limit while players remain active, according to Aternos’ policy. | Long sessions are possible, but the server is still not permanently online. |
| Files | No unrestricted FTP or arbitrary plugin, mod, or modpack uploads. | Private builds and unusual server files may not be usable. |
| Supported content | Selected mods, plugins, modpacks, datapacks, resource packs, Bedrock add-ons, and some configuration files can be installed or uploaded. | Compatibility depends on the server software and Minecraft version. |
| Inactive servers | Servers not started for a long period, typically around three months, may be deleted. | Occasional worlds need reminders and independent backups. |
| Resources | Assigned memory depends on server software and version. | Do not assume a universal RAM amount, player limit, latency, or performance guarantee. |
Can you use mods, plugins, and modpacks on Aternos?
Yes, Aternos supports many mods, plugins, and modpacks through its control panel, but Aternos does not let users upload any server file they choose. The difference between supported installation and unrestricted upload is essential.
Aternos can provide curated access to server software such as Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Fabric, and Forge, along with supported content for the selected Minecraft version. A mod or plugin may still fail if it is unavailable in Aternos’ library, requires a different server software, is incompatible with the current release, needs client-side installation, or depends on file access Aternos does not permit.
According to Aternos’ file-upload and FTP policy, users do not receive unrestricted FTP access or unrestricted custom plugin, mod, and modpack uploads. Aternos says the restriction helps prevent malicious files and attempts to keep servers running continuously.
Some files are supported for upload, including datapacks, resource packs, Bedrock add-ons, WorldEdit schematics, and certain configuration files. Users should use the panel’s supported library and upload functions rather than unofficial tools designed to bypass Aternos’ controls.
Can you upload an existing Minecraft world?
Aternos supports world management, including uploading an existing world and downloading a world for local backup. World replacement should be treated as a destructive operation: confirm the correct server, edition, folder, and destination before replacing the active world.
Before uploading, upgrading, or restoring a world, create a backup if one is available. A Java world cannot simply be moved to Bedrock and assumed to work unchanged; Java-to-Bedrock conversion is a separate technical process that can create compatibility problems. The selected server software and Minecraft version also need to match the world as closely as possible.

Aternos’ documented backup workflow uses Google Drive. A backup can include world data, player data, settings, and installed plugins, mods, add-ons, or datapacks, making external storage important for worlds that would be difficult to recreate.
- Link Google Drive from account settings or the server’s Backups page.
- Add the linked backup service to the specific server.
- Choose Create Backup.
- Optionally configure automatic backups when the server stops.
- Use the server or account backups page to restore a saved backup when needed.
The official Aternos backup instructions warn that restoring a backup replaces the current server files, including the world. Create a fresh backup before restoring so a mistaken restoration does not remove the only current copy.
Backups should not be confused with indefinite retention. A backup is useful only if it exists, can be accessed, and is recent enough to recover the desired world.
Can Aternos delete an inactive server?
Yes. Aternos says a server that has not been started for a long period—typically around three months—may be deleted. Users with a linked email address may receive advance notice, and starting the server before the deadline is generally enough to keep it active.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Aternos server-deletion policy says deleted data may not be recoverable by support without a usable backup. Seasonal worlds, school projects, and servers used only during holidays are especially vulnerable because inactivity can be mistaken for abandonment.
For an important world, link an email address, schedule a reminder to start the server occasionally, and keep a downloadable backup outside Aternos. Do not rely on the existence of an Aternos account alone to preserve a server forever.

How much RAM and performance does Aternos provide?
Aternos does not have one universal RAM figure that applies to every server. The Aternos RAM documentation states that assigned memory depends on the server software and version, so a fixed RAM number or player limit would be misleading without those details.
Small vanilla worlds with a few friends are the strongest use case. Heavy modpacks, large farms, high view or simulation distances, many simultaneously loaded chunks, complex redstone, and larger player groups can create lag. Performance also varies with the Minecraft version, plugins and mods, world size, player count, geographic location, and current platform demand.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Queue delays and automatic shutdown are availability constraints; they do not by themselves prove that a server will have poor in-game performance. Conversely, an Aternos server should not be advertised as guaranteeing a particular tick rate, latency, player count, or uptime without current version-specific evidence.
How do you troubleshoot common Aternos problems?
Why is the server stuck in a queue?
A server enters the queue when current demand exceeds available resources. Wait for the displayed estimate, remain in the queue if possible, and watch for the confirmation step near the front. Leaving the queue loses the current position; missing the confirmation requires starting the process again. Do not use bots or scripts to simulate players or evade automatic shutdown.
Why can’t friends join the server?
When friends cannot join an Aternos server, check the server status, address, edition, version, port, Geyser configuration, and Microsoft-account settings in that order.
- Confirm that the server is actually online.
- Copy the displayed address exactly.
- Confirm that everyone is using the intended Java or Bedrock Edition.
- Check that the client version matches the server version.
- For Java players, confirm that the selected server software is correct.
- For Bedrock players, enter the required port as well as the address.
- If Bedrock players are joining Java, confirm that Geyser is installed, compatible, and running.
- Check Microsoft-account multiplayer and privacy settings, particularly for console users.
- Confirm that the server has not stopped because every player left.
The Aternos Geyser troubleshooting guidance specifically covers wrong ports, missing or crashed Geyser, version mismatches, and account or platform restrictions.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhy will a mod or plugin not install?
A mod or plugin may fail because it is absent from Aternos’ supported library, incompatible with the selected Minecraft version, designed for different server software, dependent on client-side installation, or dependent on arbitrary file access. Check the content’s required version and server software before changing the server.
Do not use unofficial upload tools or automation to bypass Aternos’ restrictions. Such workarounds can violate the service rules and can introduce malicious or unstable files.
Why did the world disappear?
A missing world may result from server deletion after inactivity, opening the wrong Aternos account or server, replacing the world during an upload or restore, or failing to configure an external backup. Check the account and server first, then inspect available Google Drive backups.
A Google Drive backup may allow restoration through the Aternos backup panel. Without a usable backup, Aternos says deleted data may be unrecoverable.
How can you reduce Aternos lag?
Reduce view distance and simulation distance, limit heavy farms and redstone clocks, check the server log, and temporarily remove recently added mods, plugins, or datapacks. Reduce simultaneously loaded chunks and determine whether every player experiences the issue or only one player does.
If the workload remains too demanding after those changes, a paid host or self-hosted server may be a better technical fit. Buying more RAM should not be assumed to be an available Aternos option because memory allocation depends on the current server software, version, and program rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Aternos safe?
Aternos is operated by Aternos GmbH, a German company, but no hosting service can be described as risk-free. Aternos says it uses a protected environment and restricts arbitrary uploads partly because plugins and mods can contain malicious code.
Users remain responsible for account and file security. Use a unique Aternos password, protect the email account associated with the service, grant Google Drive access deliberately, and install only trusted mods, plugins, add-ons, and modpacks. The Aternos terms of service, Minecraft EULA, and applicable platform rules also apply.

Aternos is a good choice when a small group wants no-cost Minecraft hosting, plays intermittently, accepts pressing Start, and can work within curated mods, plugins, and file options.
Rank #4
- A group of friends wants a shared survival world without paying a monthly hosting bill.
- A beginner prefers browser-based administration instead of configuring a home server.
- The group plays in scheduled sessions and can tolerate an occasional startup queue.
- Supported plugins, mods, modpacks, datapacks, or Bedrock add-ons meet the project’s needs.
- The server owner is willing to configure and test backups.
When is Aternos a poor choice?
Aternos is a poor choice when continuous availability, unrestricted administration, predictable resources, or public-server operations matter more than zero cost.
- Players need to join while the owner is offline.
- The server must remain online 24/7.
- The project requires unrestricted FTP, private mod builds, custom plugins, or unusual server files.
- The group needs consistently predictable latency or resources.
- The server is a public community with demanding moderation, uptime, and support requirements.
- Loss of an account or neglected server would be unacceptable without independently maintained backups.
What are the alternatives to Aternos?
Exaroton
Exaroton is the most direct upgrade for someone who likes Aternos’ panel but needs more control. Aternos presents exaroton as the paid option for avoiding the queue, uploading custom files, and accessing more advanced or higher-performance hosting features.
As checked on August 18, 2026, the official exaroton page describes usage-based pricing of 1 credit per gigabyte of RAM per hour. The page also lists storage costing up to 10 credits per 30 days, with up to 10 GB per server, and advertises a free trial without requiring a payment method. Credit-to-currency cost, taxes, bundles, and promotions can change and should be checked on the purchase page before publication or purchase.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Exaroton’s listed features include no queue, full file uploads, automatic start and stop, backups, shared access, live statistics, an API, player management, DDoS protection, multiple regions, Java and Bedrock support, and Aternos import. Exaroton is a better fit when those capabilities justify usage charges; occasional players who do not mind manually starting Aternos may not need the upgrade.
Minecraft Realms
Minecraft Realms is a natural alternative for players who prioritize an official Minecraft ecosystem and simple subscription-based hosting. Current edition availability, player limits, subscription prices, and feature differences should be checked on the official Realms page because those details can change.
Realms may be less suitable for users seeking extensive mod and plugin flexibility, unrestricted server-file control, or a usage-based model rather than a subscription.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting means running Minecraft server software on a home PC, spare computer, virtual private server, or dedicated server. Self-hosting provides full file access and control over software, networking, and backups, but the owner must handle electricity or hosting costs, port forwarding, security maintenance, hardware, bandwidth, and continuous availability.
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Aternos | Small, intermittent, zero-budget groups | Queue, automatic shutdown, shared resources, and limited uploads |
| Exaroton | Aternos users needing more control and predictable access | Usage-based credits and paid hosting |
| Minecraft Realms | Players wanting a simple official Minecraft subscription | Less suited to extensive custom server administration |
| Self-hosting | Technically capable owners needing complete control | Owner manages networking, security, hardware, backups, and availability |
What is the final verdict on Aternos?
Aternos is a legitimate and useful free Minecraft hosting option for small groups that play on demand. Its free price is real, but the service is not equivalent to premium hosting: shared capacity can create a queue, empty servers stop, arbitrary uploads are restricted, performance varies, and inactive servers may eventually be deleted.
Choose Aternos when the group can coordinate startup and use supported software. Choose exaroton, Realms, or self-hosting when the group needs different combinations of always-available access, official subscription simplicity, custom files, predictable resources, or full administrative control. Regardless of the hosting choice, keep independent backups for any Minecraft world that matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Aternos completely free?
Aternos provides free Minecraft server hosting and says advertising exclusively finances the service. The practical trade-off is shared capacity, possible startup queues, automatic shutdown when the server is empty, restricted uploads, and possible deletion after prolonged inactivity.
Does Aternos stay online 24/7?
No. Aternos automatically stops a server when the last player leaves, although Aternos says there is no fixed playtime limit while players remain active. Bots and scripts intended to bypass shutdown are prohibited.
Can Bedrock players join a Java Aternos server?
Yes, Bedrock players can join a compatible Java Aternos server through Geyser, but crossplay requires compatible versions, correct address and port details, working Geyser configuration, and suitable Microsoft-account and platform settings.
Can you upload your own plugins or mods to Aternos?
No, Aternos does not provide unrestricted FTP or arbitrary custom plugin, mod, or modpack uploads. Aternos supports selected content through its panel, while datapacks, resource packs, Bedrock add-ons, schematics, and certain configuration files can be uploaded where supported.
Can Aternos delete an inactive server?
Yes. Aternos says servers not started for a long period, typically around three months, may be deleted. Starting the server before the deadline generally preserves it, but important worlds should also have independent backups because deleted data may not be recoverable.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Aternos is best understood as free, on-demand Minecraft hosting—not free 24/7 hosting. It is an excellent starting point for small groups that accept a queue and manual startup, but exaroton or self-hosting is more appropriate when custom files, predictable access, or complete control matter.
