The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is a Blackwell-generation desktop GPU aimed at high-refresh 1440p gaming. It combines 6,144 CUDA cores, 12 GB of GDDR7, fourth-generation ray tracing, fifth-generation Tensor Cores, and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. Its main caveats are equally important: independent testing found only a modest conventional-performance gain over the RTX 4070 Super, and 12 GB of VRAM may constrain demanding textures, ray tracing, AI, and long-term 4K use.

NVIDIA launched partner cards on March 5, 2025 at approximately $549 in the US, with a limited Founders Edition planned for later that month. The latest dated pricing evidence available here reported a median Newegg listing price of $899.99 in August 2026, so the card’s current value depends much more on the price you actually pay than on its original MSRP.

The short version: the RTX 5070 is a Blackwell-generation graphics card aimed primarily at high-refresh 1440p gaming. It adds NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 feature set, GDDR7 memory, fourth-generation ray tracing, and fifth-generation Tensor Cores, but its 12 GB VRAM capacity is unchanged in the way that matters most to games: there are still only 12 GB available. Independent testing also places its conventional gaming performance only slightly above the RTX 4070 Super.

That makes the RTX 5070 a feature-rich upgrade for the right buyer, not an automatic upgrade for every RTX 40-series owner. Its value depends heavily on the actual price. NVIDIA launched it at about $549, while the latest dated US marketplace data in this research—covering Newegg listings in August 2026—reported a median price of $899.99. That marketplace figure is not an official NVIDIA price and does not represent every model or seller.

RTX 5070 specifications

Blackwell GB205 GPU

The desktop RTX 5070 uses NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture and the GB205 GPU configuration. NVIDIA lists 6,144 CUDA cores, a 2.51 GHz boost clock, fifth-generation Tensor Cores, and fourth-generation RT cores. The Blackwell platform is also the basis for the card’s DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation features.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4 OC mode: 2640MHz/Default mode: 2610MHz (Boost Clock)
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.125-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

The 2.51 GHz figure is NVIDIA’s current family specification. Factory-overclocked add-in-board cards can ship with a higher advertised boost clock, while their cooling systems, dimensions, power limits, and other specifications may differ. Treat the GPU specification as a starting point rather than a complete description of every RTX 5070 sold.

12 GB of GDDR7 on a 192-bit bus

The RTX 5070 has 12 GB of GDDR7 memory connected through a 192-bit memory interface. GDDR7 is a newer and faster memory standard, but faster memory does not increase the card’s capacity. Games still have 12 GB of VRAM available.

That distinction matters when selecting a card for a long upgrade cycle. Modern high-resolution texture packs, demanding ray-traced settings, local AI workloads, and some creator applications can consume substantial video memory. The RTX 5070 can handle 1440p gaming well, but buyers who want maximum texture settings, heavy ray tracing, or a comfortable 4K margin for several years should consider 12 GB a real limitation rather than assuming GDDR7 removes the concern.

What is not universal across RTX 5070 cards

NVIDIA’s specifications describe the GPU family; they do not make every board-partner card identical. Before buying a particular model, check its individual product page for:

  • Factory-overclocked boost speed and power limit
  • Card length, height, and thickness
  • Number and type of power connectors
  • Recommended power-supply capacity
  • Cooler design, fan arrangement, and radiator clearance
  • Video outputs and bundled power adapters

A compact two-slot card and a large factory-overclocked triple-fan card may both be RTX 5070s while imposing very different case and power-supply requirements.

RTX 5070 release date and launch price

NVIDIA’s launch communication dated the partner-card release to March 5, 2025. Stock-clocked and factory-overclocked partner models were announced as available on that date. NVIDIA described the limited Founders Edition as arriving later in March 2025, so the Founders Edition did not share the same initial availability timing as the partner cards.

The original US launch MSRP was approximately $549, commonly rounded to $550. That is the launch reference price, not a guarantee of current stock or a current street price. Graphics-card prices can vary by board partner, retailer, supply, promotions, and local taxes.

RTX 5070 price: launch MSRP versus later market listings

The most recent dated pricing evidence used for this guide is a Tom’s Hardware report published August 10, 2026. It placed the median price of RTX 5070 listings on Newegg at $899.99, up from $659.99 in June 2026. The report described a roughly 36% increase.

Use that number correctly: $899.99 was a median across marketplace listings, not an official NVIDIA price, a universal selling price, or necessarily the price of the model you are considering. Actual listings can differ substantially based on cooling design, factory overclock, seller, stock, and promotion.

At or near the original $549 MSRP, the RTX 5070’s combination of modern features and 1440p performance is much easier to justify. Near the reported $900 median, the buying decision changes. At that price, compare current alternatives and higher-tier cards rather than judging the RTX 5070 against its launch MSRP alone.

How fast is the RTX 5070?

Conventional gaming performance

Independent testing is more restrained than a generational product name might suggest. In TechSpot’s tested 16-game suite, the RTX 5070 averaged approximately:

  • 1% faster than the RTX 4070 Super at 1440p
  • 5% faster than the RTX 4070 Super at 4K

Those results support a practical conclusion: in conventional rasterized gaming, the RTX 5070 is broadly in RTX 4070 Super territory. It is not a universal, large raw-performance leap over that card. Results will vary by game, resolution, settings, driver, and whether ray tracing or upscaling is enabled, but the small average uplift is important for anyone considering an upgrade from an RTX 4070 Super.

1440p is the card’s natural target

The RTX 5070 is best understood as a high-frame-rate 1440p GPU. It is suitable for players with 1440p high-refresh monitors who want access to ray tracing, DLSS, and NVIDIA’s current creator and AI features.

It can also play games at 4K, but “can run 4K” is not the same as “is a no-compromise 4K card.” Demanding ray-traced games may require reduced settings or upscaling, and the 12 GB memory capacity gives less headroom for very high-resolution textures and future releases. A sensible 4K configuration may involve DLSS, carefully chosen texture and ray-tracing settings, or both.

DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation explained

DLSS 4 is central to NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 pitch. In supported games, Multi Frame Generation can use AI to insert multiple generated frames between conventionally rendered frames. The result can be a higher displayed frame rate and smoother motion than the GPU could produce through traditional rendering alone.

Generated frames are not equivalent to independently rendered frames. The card still needs to render a base frame, and the experience depends on the game’s implementation, input latency, image quality, driver support, and the underlying rendered frame rate. A displayed frame-rate number that includes Multi Frame Generation should not be interpreted as proof that the GPU has the raw rendering performance of a much faster card.

DLSS 4 can make the RTX 5070 appear dramatically faster in supported workloads, particularly when a game already has a sufficiently strong base frame rate. It does not erase the RTX 5070’s conventional performance position near the RTX 4070 Super, and it cannot help games that do not support the relevant DLSS features.

Ray tracing, creator work, and AI

The RTX 5070 includes fourth-generation RT cores for ray-tracing workloads and fifth-generation Tensor Cores for AI-assisted features. Those capabilities matter to buyers who prefer NVIDIA’s ray-tracing and DLSS ecosystem, use supported creative applications, or run local AI software that benefits from CUDA and Tensor hardware.

They should still be weighed against memory capacity. The card’s modern accelerators do not turn 12 GB into a larger pool of VRAM. For creator or AI workloads, check the memory requirements of the exact applications and models you plan to use before buying. A card that is fast enough in a benchmark can still be unsuitable if the workload does not fit in its available memory.

Power supply, connector, and case compatibility

There is no single power, connector, or physical-size specification that applies to every RTX 5070 board. NVIDIA specifically notes that add-in-card specifications vary by manufacturer.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

As a representative example, a ZOTAC RTX 5070 Twin Edge brochure lists 250 W maximum power consumption, a 650 W recommended power supply, and one 12V-2×6 power input. Those figures describe that model and are useful as an installation reference; they should not be presented as universal RTX 5070 requirements.

Before ordering, verify these five items

  1. PSU wattage: follow the exact manufacturer recommendation for the card you choose. A 650 W supply is not automatically sufficient in every system; CPU power, PSU quality, age, and available connectors also matter.
  2. Power connector: determine whether the card uses a native 12V-2×6 connection, an adapter, or another arrangement. Do not assume every model includes or requires the same cable.
  3. Power-supply standard: an ATX 3.x supply or a compatible native 12V-2×6 cable can simplify installation, but confirm compatibility with the specific card and PSU.
  4. Case clearance: compare the card’s published length, height, and thickness with the case’s GPU clearance, radiator placement, drive cages, and adjacent expansion slots.
  5. Cable routing: connect the power cable fully and avoid sharply bending it immediately at the connector. Follow the card and power-supply manufacturer’s installation guidance.

Who should buy the RTX 5070?

  • 1440p high-refresh gamers: the card is designed around this use case, especially when DLSS features are available.
  • NVIDIA feature-focused buyers: DLSS 4, Multi Frame Generation, ray tracing, CUDA, Tensor hardware, and NVIDIA’s creator ecosystem may justify choosing it over a card with similar raw performance but a different software feature set.
  • Buyers upgrading from an older GPU: owners of significantly older cards may see a meaningful overall improvement, depending on their starting point and the games they play.
  • Selected creator and AI users: the card’s accelerators and CUDA ecosystem can be useful, provided the workload fits within 12 GB of VRAM.

Who should skip it or wait?

  • RTX 4070 Super owners seeking a large raster-performance upgrade: the measured average uplift is too small to make that upgrade compelling on performance alone.
  • Buyers primarily targeting uncompromised 4K: the 12 GB capacity and demanding ray-traced workloads require realistic settings and upscaling expectations.
  • People paying far above MSRP: at a dated median near $900, compare the RTX 5070 with whatever current alternatives are available at that price rather than assuming its original value proposition still applies.
  • Owners whose software does not support DLSS features: Multi Frame Generation cannot compensate for a game that does not support it, and raw performance remains close to RTX 4070 Super levels in the cited testing.

RTX 5070 buying checklist

  1. Set a maximum transaction price based on current alternatives, not only the $549 launch MSRP.
  2. Decide whether your main target is 1440p or 4K.
  3. Check the games and applications you actually use for DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation support.
  4. Accept that the card has 12 GB of VRAM, even though it uses GDDR7.
  5. Compare independent performance results rather than relying on the Blackwell branding alone.
  6. Choose a board partner whose dimensions, cooler, clock, connector, and warranty suit your system.
  7. Confirm PSU wattage, power-cable type, case clearance, and cable-routing requirements before purchasing.

Verdict

The RTX 5070 is a modern 1440p graphics card with meaningful AI and ray-tracing features, but its conventional performance is a modest step beyond the RTX 4070 Super rather than a revolutionary jump. DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation can substantially improve displayed frame rates in supported games, although generated frames should not be confused with native rendering power.
