To publish a native Instagram Collab, create a photo post, carousel, or Reel in the Instagram mobile app, open Tag people, choose Invite collaborator, select the other account, and tap Share. The invited account must accept the request before Instagram treats the content as a shared post. After acceptance, both accounts appear in the post header, and the post can appear on both profiles and be distributed to the collaborator’s followers.

A Collab is different from tagging, mentioning, reposting, or sharing a post to Stories. The original account remains the primary author and controls the post, including its deletion.

What an Instagram Collab does

Instagram Collabs lets two or more accounts appear as co-authors of one native post or Reel. One account creates and publishes the content; the other account receives an invitation and must accept it.

Once the invitation is accepted:

  • Both account handles appear in the post header.
  • The content can appear on both accounts’ profile grids.
  • Instagram can distribute the post or Reel to the collaborator’s followers.
  • Likes, comments, views, saves, and shares are associated with the shared content rather than with two independently uploaded copies.
  • The original creator remains the primary author and retains control over the post.

Acceptance does not guarantee that every follower will see the post, or that the post will receive double the reach. Instagram’s distribution is algorithmic and depends on factors such as audience behavior, account status, content performance, and Instagram’s recommendations.

Meta documents Collabs for feed photo posts, carousels, and Reels. Stories are not native Collab posts. You can promote a Collab by sharing it to Stories, but that is a separate action.

See Instagram’s official explanation of collaborative posts for the platform’s current ownership, visibility, and collaboration rules.

How to create an Instagram Collab post or Reel

Creating a Collab is primarily a mobile-app workflow. Meta says collaborative posts cannot currently be created on a computer. Use the Instagram app on an iPhone, Android phone, or iPad; labels can differ slightly by device and app version.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open the Instagram mobile app and sign in to the account that will publish the content.
  2. Tap Create or the + button.
  3. Choose Post or Reel.
  4. Select the photo, carousel images, or video you want to publish.
  5. Edit the media, then tap Next.
  6. On the final sharing screen, tap Tag people.
  7. Choose Invite collaborator or Invite collaborators. Do not choose ordinary tagging if you want the other account to become a co-author.
  8. Search for the collaborator’s exact Instagram username.
  9. Select the correct account. Check the profile photo, display name, and username carefully if several accounts have similar names.
  10. Tap Done.
  11. Add the caption, location, music, accessibility text, branded-content settings, and any other publishing options.
  12. Tap Share.
  13. Tell the other account that the invitation is waiting and ask the account owner to accept it.

Depending on the version of Instagram you are using, the invitation control may be labeled Invite collaborator, Invite collaborators, or appear in a slightly different position on the sharing screen. The important distinction is choosing the collaborator-specific option inside Tag people, not simply adding an account tag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you tap Share

Decide which account should be the primary author before publishing. The publishing account controls the original post, its caption and edits, and whether the post continues to exist. For a brand campaign, this decision affects approval, deletion, usage rights, comment management, and reporting.

Also confirm that:

  • You selected the intended account rather than an impersonator or similarly named account.
  • The other account has agreed to the caption, media, timing, and call to action.
  • The account can accept the request soon after publication.
  • Any commercial relationship will be disclosed separately from the Collab invitation.

What happens after you publish

Immediately after publication, the post belongs to the original author. The invitation is pending until the other account accepts it.

While the request is pending:

  • The post is live on the original author’s account.
  • The invited account is not yet a co-author on its profile.
  • The post should not be described as a completed Collab.

After the invitee accepts, Instagram adds the second account to the post header and can place the post on that account’s profile and distribute it to its followers. If the invitee declines or never responds, the original post remains a normal post on the original author’s profile.

Do not publish a duplicate post merely because the invitation has not been accepted. A second upload can divide comments, likes, views, saves, and campaign reporting. First verify that the invitation went to the right account and is still pending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to accept an Instagram Collab invitation

If you have been invited, accept the request from the exact Instagram account that received it. This matters when you manage a personal account, Creator account, Business account, or several regional brand accounts.

  1. Switch to the Instagram account that was invited.
  2. Check Instagram notifications and Direct Messages. The request may appear in either location, depending on the account and app version.
  3. Open the collaboration request.
  4. Tap Review or View request.
  5. Inspect the publishing account, media, caption, and any disclosure or commercial information.
  6. Tap Accept to join the Collab, or Decline to reject it.

Before accepting, verify that the invitation is genuine and that you agree with the content and caption. If a brand, agency, or creator manages multiple accounts, check the username—not just the display name.

Can you add a collaborator after posting?

Instagram says the original author can add or remove a collaborator after publication, but the post-publication control is not exposed consistently on every account, format, or app version.

When the option is available, the usual path is:

  1. Open the published post or Reel.
  2. Tap the … menu.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap Tag people.
  5. Choose Invite collaborator.
  6. Search for and select the account.
  7. Save the edit.
  8. Ask the account owner to accept the new invitation.

Some accounts will not show Invite collaborator in the editing screen. If it is missing, do not assume that deleting and reposting is the only solution. Consider these alternatives:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the original post and add an ordinary account tag.
  • Share the post to both accounts’ Stories.
  • Publish a coordinated second post if different ownership or captions are needed.
  • Republish as a new Collab only if you accept losing the original post’s publication history, comments, engagement, URL, and analytics continuity.

Meta’s Collab help page confirms the ability to add or remove collaborators, while the exact post-publication menus can vary in the live app.

How to remove or leave a Collab

If you are the original author

The original author can remove a collaborator. Depending on the interface, the control may appear under Edit → Tag people, beside the collaborator’s account entry, or in a post-management option.

If you are the collaborator

A collaborator can leave the collaboration or stop sharing the post to their profile. Leaving does not normally delete the original author’s post; the original author’s copy remains available unless the author deletes it or another account action ends the collaboration.

If someone deletes or deactivates the original account

The original author controls the post’s continued existence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the original author deletes the post, it disappears from the collaborator’s profile as well.
  • If the original author deactivates the account, the post disappears.
  • If the original account is reactivated, Meta says the post can be restored on both profiles.
  • If either account blocks the other, the collaboration ends, but the post remains on the original author’s profile.

A collaborator therefore does not receive an independent copy that it can preserve if the original author removes the source post. Put deletion rights and campaign-content retention in writing for commercial collaborations.

Instagram Collab rules and eligibility

Question What to know
Which formats work? Meta documents feed photo posts, carousels, and Reels. Stories are a separate sharing format, not native Collab posts.
Can I create one on a computer? Meta’s current help documentation says collaborative posts are not available for creation on computers. Use the Instagram mobile app.
Are public accounts required? No universal public-account requirement is stated. Meta says a public original author can invite a private or public account. Meta also announced in 2023 that private accounts could start a post or Reel and invite a collaborator who followed them back. Availability can vary.
Who can see a private Collab? The original author’s privacy setting is critical. If the original author is private, Meta says only that account’s followers can see the post.
Are professional accounts required? Do not treat a Business or Creator account as a universal requirement for native Collabs. Professional accounts are required for some separate tools, including detailed Insights and branded-content features, and they cannot be made private.
Is there a follower minimum? Meta’s current official Collab pages reviewed do not state a follower threshold. Do not promise a universal “no minimum” rule; availability may depend on account status, location, app version, and testing.
How many collaborators can I add? The app limits the number, but Meta’s public documentation is inconsistent. Meta announced support for up to three friends in August 2023, while some later third-party guides report five. The current Help Center material reviewed does not confirm an increase. Add only the accounts the live composer permits.
Can a scheduled post be a Collab? Meta’s scheduling documentation currently lists collaborative posts as incompatible with native scheduled content. Plan to publish manually if a native invitation is required.
Is reach guaranteed? No. A collaborator can expose the content to another audience, but acceptance does not guarantee a specific reach, impression count, or engagement result.

For reference, Meta’s August 2023 product announcement documented support for feed posts, carousels, Reels, private/public participation, and up to three invited friends at that time. Because feature availability changes, the live composer is the best source for the number of accounts your account can currently add.

Private, personal, Creator, and Business accounts

A private account can participate in a Collab under the applicable Instagram rules, but privacy limits distribution. A public original author generally offers the broadest potential audience because the post is not limited to the original author’s approved followers.

Professional-account details matter for related workflows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Business and Creator accounts: can access Instagram Insights and certain branded-content and partnership-ad features.
  • Personal accounts: are not automatically excluded from native Collabs based on the Meta materials cited here, but may not have the same analytics or commercial tools.
  • Business accounts and privacy: professional accounts cannot be made private. Instagram’s professional-account help documentation explains this limitation.

If the original author switches from public to private, the post’s visibility changes with the account’s privacy status. Do not promise public exposure when a private account is publishing.

Can you schedule an Instagram Collab?

Do not rely on Instagram’s built-in scheduler for a native Collab. Meta’s scheduling documentation currently lists collaborative posts among the features that are not compatible with scheduled content, along with certain other features such as product tagging, sponsored posts, and fundraisers.

A practical workflow is to:

  1. Agree on the media, caption, timing, disclosure, and primary author in advance.
  2. Have both account owners available when the post is published.
  3. Publish manually from the Instagram mobile app.
  4. Ask the collaborator to accept immediately.
  5. Use Stories or other reminders after acceptance if a second promotion is needed.

Third-party scheduling platforms may advertise support for collaborator posts, but their workflows are not automatically equivalent to Instagram’s native composer. Before using one, verify that it can send a real Instagram Collab invitation, supports both account types, allows the intended media format, and handles the acceptance step correctly. For example, Sprout Social documents its own Collab workflow; its behavior should not be presented as a guarantee about Instagram’s native scheduler.

Instagram Collab versus a tag, mention, repost, or Story share

Feature What happens Use it when
Collab Makes another account a visible co-author and can place the same post on both profiles after acceptance. Both accounts genuinely endorse one shared asset and want shared credit and distribution.
Ordinary tag Links or credits an account, but the post remains the original author’s post. You need attribution or want to identify someone in a photo without giving co-author status.
@mention Links an account in a caption, comment, Story, or other text and can notify it according to its settings. You want to reference an account conversationally or draw its attention to the content.
Repost Shares eligible public content through Instagram’s repost function as a separate sharing action. You want to amplify existing content without making the other account a co-author.
Story share Places a post or Reel in a temporary Story. You want a reminder, link, sticker, countdown, or short-lived promotion.
Separate posts Each account publishes its own version with separate ownership and engagement. Captions, offers, edits, timing, calls to action, or reporting must differ.
Shared access Gives selected people permission to act on an account. A team needs publishing or account-management access rather than co-author credit on one post.

Instagram’s tagging documentation treats tags as a separate feature from collaborative authorship. Being able to tag an account does not necessarily mean that account can be invited as a collaborator.

When to use a Collab—and when not to

Use a Collab when:

  • Both accounts genuinely approve the same media and caption.
  • Both want visible co-author credit.
  • A single shared comment and engagement thread is useful.
  • The same content should appear on both profile grids.
  • The partners agree on the primary author and can coordinate acceptance.

Use an ordinary tag when:

  • The other account only needs credit.
  • The account does not want the content on its profile grid.
  • The post is not a true joint publication.
  • The original author needs sole control over publication and audience.

Use separate posts when:

  • Each account needs a different caption, offer, edit, or call to action.
  • Each partner needs independent ownership or deletion control.
  • The campaign requires different publishing times.
  • The collaborator cannot accept a native invitation.
  • You need a scheduling workflow that is incompatible with native Collabs.

Use Stories in addition to a Collab when:

  • You want to remind followers about a post or Reel.
  • You need temporary stickers, countdowns, or links.
  • You want a second promotional push without creating another feed upload.

Paid partnerships, gifts, affiliate links, and disclosures

A Collab header is not an advertising disclosure. If a brand pays a creator, supplies a free or loaned product or service, or provides affiliate compensation, the commercial relationship may qualify as branded content.

Meta identifies payment, gifted or loaned products and services, and affiliate commissions among the situations covered by its branded-content rules. Where eligible, use Instagram’s Paid partnership label or Partnership label and ads control. See Meta’s pages about branded content and the Paid partnership label.

For a paid creator-brand Collab, a safer publishing checklist is:

  1. Use Invite collaborator if both the creator and brand should appear as co-authors.
  2. Enable Instagram’s Paid partnership label where the account and campaign are eligible.
  3. State the relationship clearly near the beginning of the caption.
  4. For a Reel, disclose in the video itself, preferably both visually and audibly, rather than relying only on the caption.
  5. Use plain terms such as ad, advertisement, or sponsored when appropriate.

The FTC warns that words such as collab, sp, spon, thanks, or ambassador may be vague or inadequate on their own. It also says that a platform’s built-in disclosure tool may not by itself satisfy the requirement for a clear and conspicuous disclosure. The FTC’s influencer disclosure guidance is especially relevant to campaigns reaching U.S. consumers; follow the advertising rules that apply to your audience and location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Engagement and analytics: what each account can measure

A Collab is one shared content object, not two independently uploaded copies. Public engagement is therefore associated with the shared post rather than split between duplicate uploads. The shared post can accumulate common likes, comments, views, saves, and shares.

That does not mean both accounts will see identical analytics. Instagram Insights are available to Business and Creator accounts, and the information exposed to each collaborator or to a third-party dashboard can vary based on account type, original publishing ownership, and Meta’s API permissions. Do not promise that both accounts will receive identical reach breakdowns, attribution, or account-level totals.

For a campaign, use this measurement plan:

  1. Record each account’s follower count before publishing.
  2. Record available views, reach, accounts engaged, shares, saves, comments, profile visits, and follows.
  3. Separate the Collab’s total performance from each account’s incremental business result.
  4. Use a unique link, discount code, landing page, or tracked call to action if the goal is sales or leads.
  5. Compare the result with each account’s recent posts, not only with the collaborator’s follower count.
  6. Do not describe the result as “double reach” unless your measured data actually supports that conclusion.

Meta explains the account requirements for Instagram Insights. For complex campaigns, also confirm what your scheduling or analytics vendor can access before promising client-level reporting.

Why “Invite collaborator” is missing

The control may be absent because of the device, app version, content type, account relationship, privacy settings, account restrictions, or a temporary Instagram problem. Troubleshoot in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use the mobile app. Native collaborative-post creation is not currently available on computers.
  2. Update Instagram. Also install available updates for the device operating system.
  3. Restart the device. This can clear a temporary app or session problem.
  4. Check the connection. Try both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  5. Confirm the format. Test with a supported feed photo post, carousel, or Reel.
  6. Check privacy and relationship rules. Private-account participation may depend on which account is publishing and whether the relevant accounts follow one another.
  7. Check tags and mentions. The invitee’s settings may restrict who can tag or mention the account. Instagram provides controls for who can tag or mention an account; labels can vary by app version.
  8. Check Account Status. Open Instagram’s account settings and look for Account Status → Features you can’t use. A restriction may prevent invitations or other actions.
  9. Try the normal Instagram app. A third-party publishing tool may not expose the native invitation control.
  10. Reinstall only if necessary. If ordinary updates and a restart do not help, reinstalling the app can resolve a corrupted local installation. Make sure you know the account login details first.
  11. Report the issue. Use Instagram’s in-app Help → Report a problem path and include the account, content format, device, app version, and a description of the missing control.

Instagram’s troubleshooting guidance recommends updating the app and operating system, restarting, checking the connection, reinstalling when appropriate, and reporting a persistent problem. The Account Status page can show removed content, feature restrictions, and available review or appeal actions.

  • The username was typed incorrectly.
  • You selected the wrong account from a list of similar profiles.
  • The invitee’s tag or mention settings restrict the sender.
  • One account has blocked the other.
  • A privacy, age, or regional restriction applies.
  • The account is temporarily restricted.
  • The feature is unavailable for that account or post format.
  • You have reached the number of collaborator slots available in the composer.

Ordinary tagging and Collab eligibility are related but not identical. Finding an account for a normal tag does not guarantee that Instagram will allow it as a co-author.

What to do if the invitation is not received

Ask the invitee to work through this checklist:

  • Switch to the exact account that was invited.
  • Check Instagram notifications.
  • Check Direct Messages and message requests.
  • Open the original post from the sender’s profile if possible.
  • Look for Review or View request.
  • Confirm that the invitation is still pending.
  • Ask the original author to remove and resend the invitation if the request appears stuck or was sent to the wrong account.

If the invitation was declined, the sender must normally create a new invitation. Avoid immediately publishing a duplicate unless the campaign requires separate posts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do if acceptance does not add the post to the second profile

First confirm that the invitee tapped Accept, rather than only opening the review screen. Then:

  • Refresh Instagram and check for an app update.
  • Confirm that the invitee is viewing the main profile grid, not only the Tagged section.
  • Check whether the original author switched the account to private.
  • Confirm that the collaborator did not leave the Collab and was not removed.
  • Check whether either account blocked the other.
  • Review the original author’s account status and visibility.

The original author’s privacy and account status govern the post’s visibility. If the issue continues, use Instagram’s in-app problem-reporting path rather than creating a duplicate post immediately.

How to choose the right collaborator

The best collaborator is not necessarily the account with the largest follower count. Before sending an invitation, evaluate:

  • Audience relevance: Does the partner reach people who can genuinely benefit from the content?
  • Audience overlap: Are you adding a meaningfully different audience, or mostly addressing the same people?
  • Brand safety: Are the account’s recent content, claims, and partnerships compatible with your reputation?
  • Content quality: Can both accounts approve the same image, video, caption, and tone?
  • Reliability: Can the partner accept promptly and participate in comments or follow-up promotion?
  • Account visibility: Is the original author’s privacy setting compatible with the reach you expect?
  • Commercial eligibility: If this is branded content, does the account have the appropriate professional tools and disclosure process?
  • Rights and approvals: Who owns the media, who can edit the caption, who can approve claims, and who can authorize paid promotion?
  • Primary-author decision: Which account should publish and control deletion?
  • Measurement: What link, code, landing page, or other method will show whether the collaboration produced a business result?

Agree on these items before publishing

For a business or creator campaign, put the following in writing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Final media and caption approval.
  • Publication date and time.
  • Which account will be the primary author.
  • Who will respond to comments and direct messages.
  • Who can edit, remove, or archive the post.
  • How long the post must remain live.
  • Whether the content can be used in ads or on other channels.
  • Required disclosure wording and Paid partnership settings.
  • Reporting responsibilities and the metrics each account will provide.

If a team needs access to publish or manage an account rather than co-author a specific post, use Instagram’s shared-access tools or an approved business workflow. Do not exchange account passwords as a substitute for collaboration permissions.

Quick pre-publication checklist

  • Choose a supported feed post, carousel, or Reel.
  • Use the mobile Instagram app.
  • Tap Tag people → Invite collaborator, not just Tag people.
  • Verify the exact username.
  • Agree on the primary author and ownership terms.
  • Confirm privacy, account type, and any feature restrictions.
  • Plan manual publishing because native scheduling may not support Collabs.
  • Prepare clear advertising disclosure if payment, gifts, loaned products, services, or affiliate compensation are involved.
  • Make the collaborator available to accept the invitation.
  • Record baseline metrics and use tracking links or codes when appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can personal accounts use Instagram Collabs?

Meta’s published Collab materials do not establish a universal Business or Creator-account requirement. Personal accounts may be able to participate, although availability can vary by account, country, app version, privacy setting, and account status. Professional accounts are important for separate features such as Insights and branded-content tools.

Can a private account be an Instagram collaborator?

Yes, Meta’s product information describes participation by private and public accounts. Meta says a public original author can invite a private or public account, while its 2023 announcement said a private account could start a post or Reel and invite a collaborator who followed it back. The original author’s privacy setting controls visibility, so a private original author should not promise public distribution.

Can you Collab on an Instagram Reel?

Yes. Reels are one of the formats Meta documents for Collabs. Create the Reel, tap Tag people on the sharing screen, choose Invite collaborator, select the account, publish, and wait for acceptance.

Can you add a collaborator after posting?

Instagram says the original author can add or remove collaborators, and the usual route is the published post or Reel’s … → Edit → Tag people → Invite collaborator. However, this control is not consistently available on every account, format, or app version.

Can you schedule an Instagram Collab?

Do not rely on Instagram’s native scheduler. Meta’s scheduling documentation currently lists collaborative posts as incompatible with scheduled content. Publish manually from the mobile app, and verify any third-party scheduler’s invitation and acceptance workflow before using it.

How many collaborators can you add to one Instagram post?

Instagram limits the number, but the current limit is not stated consistently in Meta’s public documentation. Meta announced up to three invited friends in August 2023, while some later third-party guides report five. Use the number of accounts the live Instagram composer allows instead of promising a fixed current limit.

Do Instagram Collabs share likes and comments?

A Collab is one shared content object, so public engagement such as likes, comments, views, saves, and shares is associated with the shared post rather than two duplicate uploads. Analytics breakdowns may still differ between accounts and third-party dashboards.

Can a collaborator delete an Instagram Collab?

The original author controls the post and its continued existence. A collaborator can leave the collaboration or stop sharing it to the collaborator’s profile, but does not receive independent ownership of the original post.

What happens if the original author deletes the Collab?

The post disappears from the collaborator’s profile as well. If the original author deactivates the account, the post also disappears; Meta says it can be restored on both profiles if the account is reactivated.

Is an Instagram Collab the same as tagging someone?

No. A normal tag links or credits an account while the post remains the original author’s post. A Collab uses Invite collaborator, requires acceptance, and can place the shared post on both profiles with both accounts shown as co-authors.

Does an Instagram Collab count as a paid partnership disclosure?

No. A Collab invitation only establishes co-authorship. Payment, free or loaned products or services, and affiliate compensation may require Instagram’s Paid partnership label and a clear disclosure such as “ad,” “advertisement,” or “sponsored.” The word “collab” alone may be too vague.

Why can’t I find the account I want to invite?

Check the username, blocking status, privacy and age restrictions, tag or mention settings, temporary account restrictions, the post format, and the number of available collaborator slots. Being able to find an account for an ordinary tag does not guarantee that it is eligible for a Collab.

What if the Collab invitation never appears?

Have the invitee switch to the exact invited account, check notifications, Direct Messages, and message requests, and open the original post from the sender’s profile. If the request remains missing, the original author can remove and resend it. Also update Instagram and check Account Status for restrictions.

Can you make an Instagram Story a Collab?

Not as a native Collab post. Meta documents Collabs for feed photo posts, carousels, and Reels. Both partners can separately share the published Collab to their Stories for temporary promotion.

The Bottom Line

The reliable formula is: create a supported post or Reel in Instagram’s mobile app, choose Tag people → Invite collaborator, publish, and have the correct account accept the request. Use a normal tag when you only need credit, separate posts when each partner needs independent control, and Stories when you want temporary promotion. Remember that the original author owns and controls the shared post, native scheduling may not support Collabs, reach is never guaranteed, and commercial relationships require disclosure beyond the Collab header.
