The Kingston DataTraveler Max is the best USB flash drive for most people in 2025. It combines a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, capacities up to 1TB, USB-A and USB-C versions, and advertised speeds of up to 1,000MB/s read and 900MB/s write. Those figures are peak ratings rather than a guarantee of sustained transfer speed, but it is still one of the strongest all-round choices.
There are better picks for specific jobs. The SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive is more convenient if you regularly move files between USB-C phones and USB-A computers. The Samsung BAR Plus is a sensible everyday USB-A drive, while the Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50 is the right choice when hardware encryption matters more than speed.

| Best for confidential files | Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50 | Hardware XTS-AES 256-bit encryption; FIPS 197; USB-A or USB-C; 16GB to 512GB | USB 3.2 Gen 1, so it is designed for security rather than maximum speed |
Kingston DataTraveler Max: best overall
The Kingston DataTraveler Max is the easiest recommendation when you want one fast, general-purpose flash drive. Kingston rates it at up to 1,000MB/s sequential read and 900MB/s sequential write, and sells it in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities. It is available in separate USB-A and USB-C versions, so check the connector before ordering.
It also has a five-year warranty and listed compatibility with Windows 10 and 8.1, macOS 10.14 and later, Linux 2.6 and later, and Chrome OS. The important qualification is performance: PCWorld’s April 2025 testing found that smaller benchmark runs were closer to competing drives than Kingston’s headline figures suggest. Large transfers can also slow as the drive heats up or its cache fills.
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
Choose it for moving large photo libraries, video files, installers and working documents. If you routinely write hundreds of gigabytes in one session, a portable SSD is a better tool.
SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive: fastest dual-connector choice
The SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive has both USB-C and USB-A connectors, making it useful for moving files between a modern laptop, an older desktop and a phone or tablet. It uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 and is rated for up to 1,000MB/s read and 900MB/s write speeds. Capacities range from 256GB through 2TB.
Its flexibility is the main reason to buy it. You do not need a separate dongle every time the host device changes. SanDisk’s speed numbers are internal-test maximums and require a suitable USB 3.0-or-better host, so a USB 2.0 port, slow adapter or unsuitable cable will limit it.

If every computer you use has USB-A ports, the current SanDisk Extreme PRO Flash Drive with USB-A offers the same headline 1,000MB/s read and 900MB/s write ratings as the dual-drive model. It uses USB 3.2 Gen 2, has a metal design, comes in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB versions, and includes a lifetime limited warranty.
Be careful when comparing listings. The similarly named older SanDisk Extreme PRO USB 3.2 Solid State Flash Drive has data-sheet ratings of only 420MB/s read and 380MB/s write. Check the exact model number and specifications rather than relying on “Extreme PRO” in the product title.

PNY PRO Elite V3: best value high-speed drive
The PNY PRO Elite V3 is a good alternative when it costs less than the Kingston and SanDisk Gen 2 models. It is rated for up to 1,000MB/s read and 800MB/s write, uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, and is available from 256GB to 1TB. The USB-A connector retracts into the body.
There is a separately marketed Type-C version. The Type-A drive is not a two-connector model, so do not assume that buying the PRO Elite V3 gives you both connector types.
Samsung BAR Plus: best everyday USB-A drive
The Samsung BAR Plus is a better fit for ordinary file transport than repeated heavy writes. Samsung rates 128GB–512GB models for up to 400MB/s read speed and lists a metal body with multi-proof protection.
Samsung does not provide an equivalent high write-speed figure. That makes the BAR Plus less suitable for large, repeated backups or video-editing scratch files, but it is a practical choice for documents, music, photos and installation media when USB-A compatibility is all you need.
SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe: best compact dual-device drive
The SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe uses an all-metal swivel design with USB-C and USB-A connectors. It supports capacities up to 2TB and is rated for up to 400MB/s read speed.

It is particularly convenient for phone-to-computer transfers, provided the phone supports the required USB storage features. Its USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface is slower than the Gen 2 drives above. The small metal body can also become noticeably hot during prolonged transfers, and SanDisk does not publish a comparable write-speed maximum.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50: best for confidential files
The Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50 is the specialist choice. It uses hardware-based XTS-AES 256-bit encryption, has FIPS 197 certification, digitally signed firmware, BadUSB protection and brute-force password protection. It supports Admin, User and One-Time Recovery password options and is available with USB-A or USB-C connectors in capacities from 16GB to 512GB.
It uses USB 3.2 Gen 1, so do not buy it expecting the speed of a DataTraveler Max. Encryption cannot be disabled. On Windows, Kingston’s manual also requires two consecutive drive letters; a drive-letter conflict can prevent the device from being accessed. That is an unusual but real deployment issue in managed or crowded systems.
Hardware encryption is different from basic password-protection software. It protects stored data if the drive is lost, but it cannot protect files from a computer that is already compromised after the drive has been unlocked.
How to choose a USB flash drive
Do not treat the USB standard as a speed guarantee
USB 3.2 Gen 2 describes a 10Gbps interface, not a guaranteed 10Gbps file transfer. The drive controller, host port, cable, adapter, file sizes, temperature and workload all affect the result. USB-C describes the connector shape only; it does not tell you whether the port is USB 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen 2 or a faster standard.

Read and write speeds are also different. A drive advertising 400MB/s read may have much slower writes. For large backups, video files or boot-media creation, a published sequential-write figure is more useful than a large read number.
Match the connector to the devices you actually use
- USB-A: common on older desktops, laptops, televisions and car systems.
- USB-C: common on newer laptops, tablets and phones, but the port’s speed and storage support vary.
- Dual-connector: convenient for moving files between device generations, but swivel mechanisms and exposed connectors introduce additional mechanical wear.
Know when a portable SSD is the better purchase
Flash drives are convenient for occasional transfers, installers and small backups. They are not automatically portable SSDs. Their compact bodies have limited cooling, and peak performance may fall during long writes. Use a portable SSD for frequent heavy writes, continuous work files, long-term primary storage or a large backup job. Keep irreplaceable data in at least one additional location regardless of which drive you buy.

Counterfeit capacity
A counterfeit drive can report its advertised capacity to Windows while containing much less physical storage. Once data passes the genuine capacity, older files may be overwritten or silently corrupted. If a drive seems suspicious, run a full write-and-verify test; simply checking the capacity shown in File Explorer is not enough. PassMark’s counterfeit-drive guidance explains this testing approach.
Buy from the manufacturer, an authorized retailer or a clearly identified first-party storefront. An unusually low price, poor packaging, missing serial information or an unclear marketplace seller should be treated as a warning.
Unsafe removal
Unplugging while data is still being written can corrupt files or the file system. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, use Taskbar notification area → Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media → Eject <device>, then wait for the “Safe To Remove Hardware” notification.

Our buying advice
- Choose the connector or connectors your devices require.
- Compare the exact model number, not just a product family name.
- Check both read and write ratings for large-transfer work.
- Confirm that the computer has a suitable USB port; an older port or adapter can become the bottleneck.
- Buy from a reputable seller and test the drive soon after purchase.
- Keep another copy of important files; a flash drive is removable storage, not a complete backup strategy.
FAQ
What is the best USB flash drive of 2025?
The Kingston DataTraveler Max is the best overall choice. It offers USB 3.2 Gen 2 performance, capacities up to 1TB, separate USB-A and USB-C versions, and a five-year warranty. Its 1,000MB/s read and 900MB/s write ratings are peak figures, so sustained real-world performance can be lower.
Is USB-C faster than USB-A?
Neither connector is inherently faster. USB-C and USB-A describe connector shapes, while the USB generation and host hardware determine speed. A USB 3.2 Gen 2 drive can run slowly when connected through a USB 2.0 port, adapter or cable.
Recommended Free Tools
Are USB flash drives suitable for backups?
They are suitable for occasional or secondary backups, but they should not be the only copy of important data. For frequent large backups or sustained writes, use a portable SSD and keep at least one additional backup.
What is the best encrypted USB flash drive?
The Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50 is the strongest choice in this list for confidential files. It provides hardware-based XTS-AES 256-bit encryption, FIPS 197 certification, digitally signed firmware and brute-force password protection. It is slower than the high-performance Gen 2 drives because it uses USB 3.2 Gen 1.
The Bottom Line
Buy the Kingston DataTraveler Max for the best overall balance of speed, capacity and portability. Choose the SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive if you need both USB-C and USB-A, the Samsung BAR Plus for straightforward everyday USB-A transfers, and the Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50 when certified hardware encryption matters more than speed. For sustained daily writes or serious backup duty, skip thumb drives and buy a portable SSD.
