1. Proton VPN: Fast & Secure — best overall free option
Proton VPN is the strongest general-purpose pick if you want unlimited browsing without paying. The Chrome extension works with Proton’s Free plan and does not require the full desktop VPN application.

There is no free-plan data limit, but free users cannot freely select any server in Proton’s network. The service assigns a free server, and changing servers selects another one randomly. The first change has a 45-second cooldown; later changes are limited to 10-minute intervals. Free servers are listed in countries including the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
To connect, open Extensions → Proton VPN → Quick Connect, or select a country and click Connect. Proton does not guarantee streaming access on its free plan, so this is better for ordinary browsing than for reliably unblocking streaming catalogs.
Best for: unlimited basic browsing and users who want a clearly documented free plan.
2. Windscribe — best free allowance after verification
Windscribe gives you 10 GB per month after you confirm an email address. Without email confirmation, the allowance is 2 GB per month. Windscribe also says that unsubscribing from promotional email can reduce the allowance to 2 GB.
Free users can access servers in 11 countries. The Chrome extension is a browser proxy with ad- and tracker-blocking features, making it more capable than a basic IP-switching tool. Its Chrome Web Store listing links to source code, which is a useful transparency benefit, although accessible source code is not the same thing as an independent security audit.
Best for: users who need a defined monthly allowance and are comfortable confirming an email address.
3. hide.me Proxy — best no-account option
hide.me Proxy is explicitly a proxy extension. It routes Chrome traffic through hide.me proxy servers but does not provide the same device-wide coverage as the provider’s Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android applications.
The free Chrome product requires no account and advertises unlimited data. Its listing says that it does not request personal information to start and claims no session, usage, or activity logs. Those are provider statements, not independent verification, so treat them as part of the trust decision rather than as proof of anonymity.

Best for: occasional browser privacy without signup.
4. TunnelBear VPN — simplest interface, but only 2 GB
TunnelBear remains easy to understand, but its free tier is small. Free accounts receive 2 GB per month, and unused data does not carry over. The allowance resets on the account’s monthly anniversary.
TunnelBear announced in December 2025 that country selection and some other customization options would move behind the paid tier for ordinary free users. The extension can still provide an encrypted browser connection, but do not assume that a free account lets you choose any of the countries shown in the general product description.
Best for: testing a VPN or doing light browsing. The 2 GB allowance is unsuitable for regular video streaming or large downloads.

Planet VPN says its free Chrome plan needs no account, email address, or credit card. It currently lists six free server locations across five countries.
The extension also includes ad and tracker blocking plus a cookie-denial feature. These are browser-level privacy tools, not a substitute for antivirus or full-device malware protection. Planet VPN claims that it does not log activity or sell data, but review the Chrome Web Store privacy panel before installation because disclosures and permissions can change.
Best for: users who want a no-signup proxy with basic ad and tracker controls.
6. Browsec VPN — straightforward setup with advertised WebRTC control
Browsec works without registration. Its free plan lists four locations: the United States, Netherlands, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Browsec describes free speeds as limited or moderate.

The provider advertises WebRTC leak protection and says it disables WebRTC to reduce the chance of exposing your real IP address. Test that behavior rather than assuming it remains unchanged after every extension update. The Chrome privacy panel says Browsec handles personally identifiable information, an important reminder that a free service may still process user data.
Installation is simple: open the Chrome Web Store listing, select Add to Chrome, select Add extension, click the Browsec toolbar icon, and choose Protect me.
Best for: casual location switching and users specifically looking for a provider-advertised WebRTC control.
7. VeePN — feature-heavy, but its update is older
VeePN advertises unlimited traffic, ad, tracker and malware blocking, location spoofing, and a no-logs policy. Its listing also says it can automatically disable other proxy extensions to resolve conflicts.

That conflict handling is useful because several extensions that control Chrome’s proxy settings can interfere with one another. The main caution is maintenance: the current store record shows version 3.7.2, last updated September 27, 2025. An older update does not prove that the extension is insecure, but it is a reason to check its update history before relying on it.
Best for: users who want many browser features and are willing to accept the older update record.
8. CyberGhost VPN – Proxy for Chrome — four locations and an explicit leak warning
CyberGhost’s Chrome product is a proxy with four free locations: the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania. Its listing advertises unlimited bandwidth and IP masking.
The important limitation is unusually clear: the listing says the extension does not protect against WebRTC leaks or Flash-based vulnerabilities. If leak resistance is your main reason for installing a browser VPN, choose a different entry or use a full VPN application with the relevant protections. CyberGhost recommends its desktop or mobile applications for coverage across all apps and devices.

9. ZoogVPN — transparent 10 GB cap, but check data handling
ZoogVPN provides five listed free locations—Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Singapore—and a 10 GB monthly allowance.
The Chrome product is technically a proxy rather than a full-device VPN. The Chrome Web Store privacy panel lists personally identifiable information as handled. That does not automatically make the extension unsafe, but it means “no logs” marketing should not be interpreted as “collects no data.” Compare the provider’s claims with the store disclosure before using it for sensitive work.
Best for: users who want a clearly stated 10 GB allowance and one of its available locations.
10. UltraSurf — practical for restrictive networks, less privacy-minimal
UltraSurf Security, Privacy & Freedom VPN is a one-click encrypted proxy/VPN tool aimed in part at bypassing restrictive networks.
Its optional Safe Browsing feature checks pages for threats. When enabled, it sends the current page URL and, where available, the referrer to UltraReach’s security service. The feature is disabled by default and requires consent. The Chrome Web Store privacy panel lists web history as handled, so users who want the smallest possible data exposure should leave Safe Browsing off or select another extension.
Best for: censorship circumvention when you understand the URL-checking disclosure.

- Open the Chrome Web Store.
- Search for the provider and confirm that the publisher matches the official company.
- Open the exact listing and select Add to Chrome.
- Review the requested permissions, then select Add extension.
- Click Chrome’s puzzle-piece Extensions icon and click the pin beside the extension.
- Open the extension, sign in or create an account if required, and connect.
Chrome does not allow extension installation while you are browsing as a guest or in Incognito mode. Work- and school-managed computers may also block installation.

Allow the extension in Incognito
Extensions are disabled in Incognito by default. To enable one:
- Click ⋮ in Chrome.
- Open Settings → Extensions.
- Select the VPN extension.
- Open Details.
- Turn on Allow in Incognito.
Only enable this for an extension you trust. Incognito removes local browsing history after the session; it does not make you anonymous to websites, your employer, your ISP, or the VPN provider.

What a free Chrome VPN does not guarantee
- Whole-device protection: a browser extension normally covers Chrome only.
- Unlimited data: Windscribe, TunnelBear, and ZoogVPN have explicit monthly limits, while Proton’s unlimited tier still restricts server selection.
- Streaming access: free exit IPs may be blocked or rate-limited. Proton guarantees streaming support only on paid plans.
- Anonymity: a VPN does not remove cookies, account identifiers, browser fingerprinting, or trust in the VPN operator.
- Leak protection: support varies by extension. CyberGhost’s listing explicitly warns that its proxy does not protect against WebRTC leaks.
- Safety based on ratings alone: a 4.6/5 rating is not an independent security review.
Install only the exact official listing. Search results can include unrelated extensions with names resembling Proton VPN, TunnelBear, or Browsec VPN. Hola VPN is also excluded from this list’s privacy-focused standard because its store disclosure lists personally identifiable information, location, web history, and user activity among the data it handles.

Are Chrome VPN extensions safe?
Some are reasonable tools when they come from the official publisher and disclose their free-tier limits and data practices. They are not automatically safe because they have high ratings. Check the publisher, permissions, Chrome privacy panel, update date, and provider privacy policy before installing.
