Choosing a domain registrar is mostly a renewal-price and management decision, not a first-year promotion decision. A domain advertised for $0.01 can cost more than $20 every year after the promotion, while a registrar charging a few dollars more upfront may include privacy, DNS tools, email forwarding, or simpler portfolio management.

This comparison uses standard, non-premium .com pricing observed on August 8, 2026. Prices can change with registry increases, promotions, taxes, payment methods, and account volume. Premium domains and many country-code extensions are priced differently.

Quick comparison

Registrar Best for Standard .com pricing Main drawback
Cloudflare Registrar Lowest long-term cost Registry wholesale price, with no Cloudflare markup Cloudflare nameservers are mandatory
Porkbun Best overall value $11.06 registration, renewal, and transfer Payment method can affect the final total
Dynadot Transparent pricing and bulk management $10.88 registration, renewal, and transfer Currency selection can change the displayed price
Namecheap Beginners and broad TLD selection $10.98 sale registration; $18.48 renewal Renewal pricing is considerably higher
NameSilo Large portfolios and investors $17.29 standard; lower volume-program pricing available Headline pricing depends on discount tier
Hover Simple, domain-focused management $18.99 registration, renewal, and transfer Expensive for a single .com
GoDaddy Auctions, marketplace, and support $0.01 first year with a three-year term; $22.99 renewal Promotional pricing is misleading if read as a one-year price
IONOS Domain, hosting, and email bundles $1 offer; $20 regular renewal Several pricing columns make the actual long-term cost easy to miss
Squarespace Domains Squarespace users and former Google Domains customers Usually $10–$20; published .com reseller price is $20 Less attractive if you do not use Squarespace services
Name.com Conventional registrar with integrations $12.99 registration; $19.99 renewal Privacy may be a separate product for some domains

1. Cloudflare Registrar — best for the lowest long-term cost

Cloudflare Registrar charges the registry wholesale price without adding a registrar markup. That makes it the strongest option when your priority is keeping a domain for many years at the lowest sustainable cost. WHOIS redaction, DNSSEC, Cloudflare security controls, and SSL/TLS integration are included.

The important qualification is that Cloudflare Registrar is not compatible with an arbitrary DNS provider. Every domain registered through Cloudflare must use Cloudflare nameservers. If you want to move the DNS zone to another provider, you must transfer the domain to a different registrar.

Cloudflare also does not currently support IDNs or Unicode domains. Keep the registrant email verified: an unverified address can put the domain on an ICANN hold and replace its nameservers with parking nameservers.

To register, open Cloudflare dashboard → Register domains → enter a name → Search → Purchase. Choose the term from the Payment drop-down, then select Complete purchase. Auto-renew is enabled by default, although it can be disabled during registration or later.

2. Porkbun — best overall value

Porkbun is the best balance for most individuals, freelancers, and small businesses. Its public TLD table lists standard .com registration, renewal, and transfer at $11.06, and supported domains include free privacy. The company sells many extensions close to cost and makes the renewal figure visible alongside the registration price.

Do not assume the exact total is identical for every payment method. Porkbun’s pricing explanation breaks a .com price into wholesale cost, the $0.20 ICANN fee, and a card-processing component; the final amount can therefore differ slightly. Premium domains and unusual extensions also follow different pricing rules.

Recovery is expensive if a domain reaches redemption: Porkbun lists a $120 restoration fee in addition to the normal renewal. Enable auto-renew and keep payment details current rather than relying on a last-minute recovery.

3. Dynadot — best for transparent pricing and bulk management

Dynadot lists standard .com registration, renewal, and transfer at $10.88. It is particularly useful when you manage several domains because it offers bulk and super-bulk pricing, free privacy, DNS tools, a website builder, and a free custom email address.

Its pricing page is more useful than a simple checkout price list. For each TLD, you can inspect Register, Renew, Transfer, privacy, grace period, delete, restore, IDN, and restriction information. Check the selected currency before comparing prices, since exchange rates and currency settings can affect what is displayed.

The standard .com restore price shown by Dynadot is $100.92. A first-year promotion or a premium domain should not be compared with its normal .com price.

4. Namecheap — best for beginners and a wide TLD selection

Namecheap has a familiar interface, a large extension catalog, and a search tool that supports terms of up to 10 years. Free Domain Privacy is available for life on supported domains, and DNSSEC is listed among its free services.

The major pricing warning is the renewal. The current public table lists standard .com registration at $10.98 on sale, or $14.98 at the regular registration price, but renewal is $18.48. Transfer pricing is listed at $11.48. A $0.20 ICANN fee may apply to affected TLDs.

Namecheap is a sensible choice if you value a beginner-friendly control panel or need an extension that is not available at a cheaper registrar. Before buying a country-code domain, check its privacy availability and registration requirements; those rules are controlled by the relevant registry.

5. NameSilo — best for large portfolios

NameSilo is designed for people managing many domains. It provides WHOIS privacy, email forwarding, DNS management, domain locking, Domain Defender, and API access without separate ICANN, processing, or privacy fees under its published pricing policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The displayed .com price depends on volume. NameSilo lists regular registration at $17.29 for accounts holding 1–49 domains and $11.05 at its 0+ discount-program tier, with lower prices at larger bulk tiers. That means a screenshot showing one price may not represent what a new account will pay.

NameSilo states that renewal pricing generally does not exceed registration pricing, subject to listed exceptions and special promotions. Its support documentation lists a $75 restoration price for a .com that has reached restoration status.

To change auto-renewal, use Domain manager → select the domain → Set Auto Renewal → Yes/No → Submit.

6. Hover — best for a simple, domain-only experience

Hover is a good fit when you want a clean domain-management experience and do not need a large hosting bundle or a crowded marketplace. Supported domains include free WHOIS privacy, and Hover says renewal discounts begin at 10 domains and increase with portfolio size.

The trade-off is price. Standard .com registration, renewal, and transfer are each listed at $18.99 per year. That is substantially more than Cloudflare, Porkbun, or Dynadot for a single domain. Hover makes more sense when simplicity and support matter more than minimizing the annual bill, or when a larger portfolio qualifies for renewal discounts.

7. GoDaddy — best for auctions, marketplace tools, and support

GoDaddy remains useful for domain auctions, aftermarket inventory, bulk tools, bundled website services, and 24/7 phone and chat support. It includes free domain privacy, charges no fee for outgoing transfers, and lists incoming transfers from $11.99 with one year added.

Its headline .com promotion requires careful reading. The May 20, 2026 pricing table lists $0.01 for the first year only with a three-year purchase requirement. The listed renewal price is $22.99. In other words, this is not a $0.01 one-year domain, and the renewal can make a long-term portfolio significantly more expensive.

GoDaddy also sells premium domains separately from standard registrations. A short name found in its marketplace may have an aftermarket price unrelated to the standard .com registration price.

8. IONOS — best for an all-in-one setup

IONOS is convenient if you want a domain alongside hosting, business email, SSL, a website builder, or an AI naming tool. Its catalog includes more than 500 extensions and includes domain locking.

The .com price table lists a $1 welcome offer, a $1 domain-bundle price, a $10 special offer, and a $20 regular renewal. Those are different offer categories, not four interchangeable prices. Review the checkout term and the post-promotion renewal before accepting an offer.

IONOS lists a standard .com restoration fee of $90. It is a practical one-stop provider, but a poor choice if you are selecting it solely because of the $1 introductory price.

9. Squarespace Domains — best for Squarespace sites and migrated Google Domains accounts

Squarespace Domains can manage a domain independently of a Squarespace website, but it is most convenient for people already using Squarespace. Current consumer guidance gives a typical standard .com renewal range of $10–$20, while the published reseller price schedule lists .com at $20 annually. Check the exact price in the domain search or dashboard before publishing a budget.

DNSSEC is automatically enabled for Squarespace-managed domains when the TLD supports it. Transfers can take up to 15 days, and changing DNS while a transfer is pending can create connection problems.

Google Domains is not a current standalone registrar. Squarespace acquired Google Domains’ registrations and accounts on September 7, 2023. If your old domain came from Google Domains, go to squarespace.com/login → Log into your Squarespace account → domains dashboard to manage it.

10. Name.com — best for conventional management and integrations

Name.com offers a conventional registrar experience with domain search, transfers, privacy options, and integrations with website and email services such as Google Workspace. A dated May 20, 2026 comparison lists .com registration at $12.99 and renewal at $19.99.

Those figures should be treated as a comparison snapshot rather than a permanent guarantee. Also check privacy before ordering a specific extension. Name.com’s API documentation exposes privacy as a separately purchasable or renewable product for some domains, so it should not be described as universally free.

What to check before buying a domain

Compare the second-year price

Promotional registration prices are not useful on their own. For a domain you expect to keep, compare at least three numbers: registration, renewal, and transfer. Current examples show the gap clearly:

  • GoDaddy: $0.01 first year with a three-year requirement; $22.99 renewal.
  • IONOS: $1 offer; $20 regular renewal.
  • Namecheap: $10.98 sale registration; $18.48 renewal.
  • Dynadot: $10.88 registration and renewal.
  • Porkbun: $11.06 registration and renewal in its public TLD table.

Also check whether a listed price requires a multi-year purchase, a bundle, a volume program, or a particular payment method.

Do not assume privacy applies to every extension

WHOIS privacy and personal-data redaction depend on the TLD and registry policy. A registrar may include privacy for .com while being unable to provide it for a particular country-code extension. If privacy matters, verify the exact TLD before checkout.

Understand transfer locks

A correct authorization code does not guarantee a successful transfer. The domain may also need to be unlocked and eligible under registry rules. ICANN policy includes a 60-day inter-registrar lock after a completed transfer and may allow a 60-day lock after a change of registrant unless the registrant opted out beforehand. Extensions such as .uk, .co.uk, and .org.uk can use different transfer procedures.

Protect the renewal process

  1. Turn on auto-renewal for domains that support important websites or email.
  2. Use an email address you actively monitor for registrar notices.
  3. Keep the registrant email verified, particularly with Cloudflare Registrar.
  4. Store the account recovery details and domain authorization process securely.
  5. Check the expiration date and payment method several weeks before renewal.

FAQ

Which domain registrar is cheapest in 2026?

Cloudflare Registrar is usually the cheapest for supported standard domains because it charges the registry wholesale price without a Cloudflare markup. Porkbun and Dynadot are also low-cost choices with public .com prices of $11.06 and $10.88 respectively, based on the prices checked on August 8, 2026.

Is Cloudflare Registrar a good choice for every website?

No. It is a strong choice if you already use Cloudflare DNS and are comfortable keeping Cloudflare nameservers. Cloudflare Registrar requires its nameservers, does not currently support IDNs or Unicode domains, and can place a domain on hold if the registrant email is not verified.

Why should I avoid choosing a registrar by its first-year price?

Introductory prices can require a multi-year purchase and are often followed by higher renewals. For example, GoDaddy lists a $0.01 first year with a three-year requirement and a $22.99 renewal, while IONOS lists a $1 offer and a $20 regular renewal. Compare the cost of keeping the domain for at least two or three years.

Is Google Domains still available?

No. Google Domains was acquired by Squarespace on September 7, 2023, and is no longer a standalone registrar. Migrated domains are managed through the Squarespace account and domains dashboard.

The Bottom Line

For most readers, Porkbun is the safest all-around recommendation: its .com registration and renewal prices are close to cost, privacy is included on supported domains, and the public pricing table makes comparison straightforward. Choose Cloudflare Registrar if the lowest long-term price matters most and you are willing to use Cloudflare nameservers. Choose Dynadot for transparent TLD data and bulk management, NameSilo for a large portfolio, and GoDaddy when auctions or marketplace inventory are more important than low renewal prices.
