It launched in the United States at $399.99 for 128GB.
There are important limitations, however. The phone has no microSD slot, its 45W charger is sold separately, and the 1,200-nit display figure applies to High Brightness Mode rather than normal sustained use. Samsung’s U.S. store currently lists both storage versions as out of stock, while its March 2026 MSRP file marks the 128GB U.S. model, SM-A366UZKAXAA, as EOL. That makes the A36 more relevant as a discounted or carrier-supplied phone than as a straightforward new purchase from Samsung.

Samsung describes the panel as 6.7 inches diagonally, although the rounded-corner measurement is approximately 6.5 inches. The 1,200-nit number is a peak measurement in High Brightness Mode, so it should not be interpreted as the screen’s normal brightness in every situation.
Display and design
The A36’s 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED screen is one of its strongest features. The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and supported animations look smoother than on a conventional 60Hz panel, while AMOLED provides deep blacks and strong contrast for video, photos, and dark-mode apps.

Its body is relatively slim at 7.4mm, but this is still a large phone at 78.2mm wide and 195g. It is better suited to two-handed use than to people who prefer compact phones. Gorilla Glass Victus+ covers the front and rear, adding scratch and impact resistance, although it does not make the phone indestructible.
Performance and software
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 places the A36 in the mainstream performance category. It is suitable for everyday tasks such as messaging, navigation, streaming, web browsing, banking, and social apps. Configuration matters: some markets receive 6GB, 8GB, or 12GB of RAM, and app-reload behavior can differ between those versions.
The phone launched with Android 15 and One UI 7.0. Samsung promises up to six generations of Android and One UI upgrades, together with six years of security updates. “Up to” matters: update availability and timing vary by model number, country, carrier, and region. An unlocked A36 and a carrier-branded A36 may not receive the same update on the same day.

Depending on the carrier or software variant, the final option may instead be called Check for system updates or Check for software updates. Samsung also supports updating the phone through Smart Switch on Windows or Mac.

Cameras and Awesome Intelligence
The rear camera system combines a 50MP main camera with autofocus and optical image stabilization, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 5MP macro camera. OIS on the main camera helps reduce blur caused by hand movement, particularly in lower light and during video recording. The 12MP front camera supports HDR selfie video.
The A36 introduced Samsung’s A-series Awesome Intelligence features. Supported tools include:
- Circle to Search with Google: circle an object or text on screen to search for it.
- Object Eraser: remove selected distractions from photos.
- Filters: create effects using a reference image.
- Edit Suggestion: receive suggested photo edits.
- HDR selfie video: record selfie video with improved highlight and shadow handling.
These are not a guarantee that every Galaxy AI feature found on a more expensive Samsung phone is present. Feature availability depends on the model, region, compatible app, Android version, and Google app version. Circle to Search also requires an internet connection in supported contexts, and its results may not always be accurate.
Best Face is not an A36 feature. Samsung identifies it as exclusive to the Galaxy A56 5G in this A-series generation.

Battery life and charging
The A36 has a 5,000mAh typical-capacity battery, with a rated minimum capacity of 4,905mAh. Actual battery life depends on screen brightness, mobile signal, refresh-rate use, gaming, camera use, and background apps.
It supports wired charging of up to 45W, but the U.S. box does not include a charging adapter. Samsung supplies a USB-C-to-USB-C data cable, SIM-ejection pin, and printed materials; the compatible charger and 45W cable are sold separately. A lower-wattage compatible adapter will charge the phone more slowly.
If the battery is completely empty, the charging indicator may take several minutes to appear after connecting the cable. That delay does not necessarily mean the phone or charger has failed.

The A36 is sold with 128GB or 256GB of internal storage, depending on the market and configuration. There is no microSD card slot. If you choose the 128GB model, you cannot later add a microSD card to increase its internal storage.
For additional space, use cloud storage or a compatible USB-C storage drive. The 256GB version is the safer choice for people who keep many downloaded videos, large games, offline maps, or 4K recordings on the phone.
The phone supports a physical SIM and eSIM capability, but eSIM support is not identical across all carriers and regional variants. During setup, the available options may include:
- Transfer SIM from another device
- Scan QR code
- Search for a mobile plan
- Set up later in Settings
Your carrier may need to activate the eSIM or provide a QR code. If the eSIM options do not appear, confirm that the phone’s exact model and carrier support eSIM before treating it as a software fault.
IP67 water resistance: what it does and does not mean
IP67 means the phone was laboratory-tested against dust and submersion in up to 1 meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. It is useful protection against accidental splashes and brief freshwater exposure, not permission to take the phone swimming.
Samsung specifically advises against beach or pool use. Salt water, chlorinated water, pressure jets, drops, and damage to the phone can compromise its seals. Water resistance can also diminish with normal wear. Do not deliberately submerge the A36 or connect a charger while the USB-C port is wet.

Availability and value
The A36 launched in the U.S. at $399.99 for 128GB. Samsung’s U.S. store currently shows both storage versions out of stock, and Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP file marks the U.S. 128GB model SM-A366UZKAXAA as EOL. Availability may therefore depend on carriers, retailers, remaining inventory, and regional versions.
The phone makes the most sense when discounted or included in a carrier promotion. Its best reasons to buy are the large 120Hz AMOLED panel, long support commitment, OIS-equipped main camera, IP67 rating, and 5,000mAh battery. Its main compromises are the lack of microSD expansion, separate charger purchase, large physical size, and the fact that some advertised features and configurations vary by market.
