No—you probably do not need all 10 Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime entries. But you also should not delete them all just because their names look repetitive. Each entry can represent a different .NET release, patch level, CPU architecture, or installation managed by Visual Studio. The safe cleanup rule is to keep the latest patch of every major .NET version your applications actually require.
What “Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime” means
The Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime is the runtime environment used by Windows desktop applications built with modern .NET. This includes programs made with Windows Forms and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).
It is not one product installed ten times. An entry such as Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime - 8.0.29 (x64) differs materially from Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime - 6.0.x (x86). They may serve different applications.

Installing the Desktop Runtime does not normally require a separate installation of the matching ordinary .NET Runtime. Likewise, if you have the SDK for a release, it already includes that release’s runtimes.

Why several versions can coexist
.NET is designed for side-by-side installation. A program targeting net8.0 does not automatically switch to .NET 9 or .NET 10 simply because a newer version exists. If the required major version is unavailable, a framework-dependent application can fail to start with a message saying that the appropriate framework or runtime was not found.
Patch releases work differently. An application targeting net8.0 will normally use the highest suitable installed 8.0.x patch. It does not need every earlier 8.0 patch installed.
For example, these entries are usually redundant within the same architecture:
- Desktop Runtime 8.0.25 (x64)
- Desktop Runtime 8.0.27 (x64)
- Desktop Runtime 8.0.29 (x64)
In that case, the latest acceptable 8.0 patch—8.0.29 in this example—normally supersedes the earlier patches. However, these are not automatically interchangeable:
- Desktop Runtime 6.0.x versus 8.0.x
- Desktop Runtime x86 versus x64
- A normal system installation versus a Visual Studio-managed installation
Which .NET versions should you keep?
As of August 7, 2026, the supported releases are:

.NET 7 and earlier are out of support. That does not prove that an old application no longer needs them, though. A business utility, printer program, accounting package, or vendor application may still target an older framework. Removing an out-of-support runtime can therefore break software even though the runtime itself no longer receives updates.

.NET 11 is listed as a preview release, not a supported production release. Do not install or retain it as a replacement for a supported runtime unless you specifically need it for testing.
Check what is actually installed
Before uninstalling anything, open Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and run:

dotnet --infoThe first command lists runtime families, versions, and architectures. The second lists SDKs used for development. The third provides broader installation information, including the host and paths.
You might see output resembling:

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may need the x86 Desktop Runtime. The presence of the x64 runtime does not satisfy that requirement. Removing every x86 entry because your computer is “64-bit” can stop an older desktop application from opening.

Review the architecture shown in Installed apps or in the .NET uninstall tool before removing a runtime. If Windows has competing 32-bit and 64-bit hosts, identify them with:

C:Program Filesdotnetdotnet.exeThe order matters when the wrong host is being selected. On Arm-based Windows systems, there can also be Arm64 and x64 installations in separate locations, including C:Program Filesdotnet and C:Program Filesdotnetx64.
How to remove unnecessary runtimes in Windows 11
- Open Start and search for Add or Remove Programs.
- Open the settings page and search Installed apps for
.net. - Find the specific Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime entry.
- Check its version and x86/x64 architecture.
- Select the … menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Restart and test the applications you use.
How to remove them in Windows 10
- Open Start and search for Add or Remove Programs.
- In Apps & features, search for
coreor.net. - Select the runtime you want to remove.
- Click the direct Uninstall button.
- Test your desktop applications after the removal.
A safer command-line option
Microsoft’s .NET Uninstall Tool can list and remove Desktop Runtime entries specifically. With version 1.7.521001 or later installed, first list the candidates:
dotnet-core-uninstall list --windows-desktop-runtime
dotnet-core-uninstall list --windows-desktop-runtime --x64
dotnet-core-uninstall list --windows-desktop-runtime --x86To remove one exact version:
dotnet-core-uninstall remove <VERSION> --windows-desktop-runtimeYou can restrict the operation by architecture:
dotnet-core-uninstall remove <VERSION> --windows-desktop-runtime --x64
dotnet-core-uninstall remove <VERSION> --windows-desktop-runtime --x86The tool also supports cleanup filters:
dotnet-core-uninstall remove --all-but-latest --windows-desktop-runtime
dotnet-core-uninstall remove --all-below <VERSION> --windows-desktop-runtime
dotnet-core-uninstall remove --all-previews --windows-desktop-runtimeAdd --yes or -y to skip confirmation. Read the list carefully first; “all but latest” can still be the wrong choice if applications require multiple major versions.
When you should not uninstall an entry
It belongs to Visual Studio
If an entry indicates that it was installed or managed by Visual Studio, remove it through Visual Studio Installer, not Windows Settings. Visual Studio maintains its own .NET installations, and removing one directly can interfere with development workloads.

An application still targets that major version
A newer runtime is not a universal replacement. An application targeting .NET 8 generally does not run on .NET 9 or .NET 10 merely because those versions are installed. Minor-version roll-forward can also produce surprising behavior: an application requesting 5.0 might use 5.1.0 if no 5.0 runtime is installed, then switch to 5.0.3 after that patch is installed. Lower major versions are not considered—for example, a 3.0 application does not roll forward to 5.0.
You are removing the SDK used by a project
The runtime that launches an application and the SDK selected when building a project are separate concerns. The CLI normally chooses the latest installed SDK, but a project can pin one with a global.json file:

Do not try to clean up .NET by deleting C:Program Filesdotnet or another entire dotnet directory. Microsoft warns that this can remove installed global tools, break Visual Studio 2019 version 16.3 and later, and leave orphaned entries in Apps & features.
Use Windows’ uninstall process, Visual Studio Installer for Visual Studio-owned components, or the supported .NET Uninstall Tool. Preview releases deserve extra caution because manually installed previews may need to be uninstalled manually; a package-manager upgrade will not necessarily remove them.

What the safest cleanup looks like
- Inventory runtimes with
dotnet --list-runtimes. - Group entries by major/minor version and architecture.
- Keep the latest patch in each group that an installed application needs.
- Keep x86 when a 32-bit application may require it.
- Leave Visual Studio-managed components to Visual Studio Installer.
- Remove older same-band patches first, rather than deleting an entire major version.
- Launch your important applications after each cleanup.
In practice, many computers can safely lose several old patch-level Desktop Runtime entries. They should not automatically lose every older major version. The number of entries is less important than the applications and architectures those entries support.
FAQ
Can I uninstall all Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime versions except the newest one?
Not safely in every case. Keep the latest patch of each major version required by your applications. The newest .NET major release does not automatically replace older major releases.
Will uninstalling .NET Desktop Runtime remove .NET Framework?
No. Modern .NET Desktop Runtime and the older Windows .NET Framework are separate products. Removing a modern Desktop Runtime entry does not remove .NET Framework 4.x.

A Desktop Runtime installation includes the matching ordinary .NET Runtime, so a separate matching .NET Runtime installation is normally unnecessary. Other applications may still require a different runtime version or family.
Why do I have both x86 and x64 Desktop Runtime entries?
They support different application architectures. A 32-bit Windows application can require x86 even on 64-bit Windows, so do not remove x86 solely because x64 is installed.
What happens if I remove a runtime an application needs?
A framework-dependent application may fail to start and display an error stating that the required .NET runtime or framework could not be found. Reinstalling the required version usually restores it.
Is .NET 11 a replacement I should install now?
The current download page lists .NET 11 as a preview. Preview releases are not supported for production use and should not be treated as a replacement for supported .NET 8, 9, or 10 installations.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You do not need ten redundant copies, but the entries are not necessarily duplicates. Remove old patch versions within the same major/minor release when a newer patch is installed, but keep older major versions, x86 runtimes, and Visual Studio-managed components unless you have confirmed they are no longer needed. Inventory first with dotnet --list-runtimes, uninstall through the supported tools, and never delete the entire dotnet folder.
