How many seasons of Victoria were made?
Victoria aired on ITV from 2016 to 2019. ITVX lists the program as a series starring Jenna Coleman, and RadioTimes and TV Insider identify three completed series with 25 episodes in total.

What ITV actually said about Series 4
On July 25, 2021, ITV said there were “no plans presently to film Victoria.” The broadcaster also said it might revisit the show with its production team at a later point, according to RadioTimes.
That wording matters. ITV confirmed that a fourth series was not in active development, but it did not announce a formal cancellation. Saying that ITV “canceled Victoria after three seasons” is more definite than the available record supports.
The most accurate description is that Victoria Series 4 was never commissioned and remains unmade, while ITV has not publicly described it as permanently canceled.
Why Jenna Coleman’s age became the central problem
Queen Victoria’s life continued for decades beyond the period covered by the third series. Jenna Coleman, however, was playing the monarch at an age considerably younger than the historical Victoria portrayed in a potential continuation.
After Series 3, Coleman said in May 2019 that the show would “take a break.” In August 2020, she said she remained open to returning but wanted to wait until she was older, RadioTimes reported. Her concern was whether she could portray an older Victoria naturally and convincingly.

Coleman said she could play Victoria into her sixties, but there was a practical limit to how old she could appear without relying on extensive prosthetics. She described the prospect of several hours of makeup and prosthetic work each filming day, while still needing the performance to look believable rather than visibly artificial.
Those comments provide the clearest on-record explanation for the delay. They point to a timing and aging issue, not a confirmed dispute with ITV, a reported cast walkout, or a documented ratings-based cancellation.
The story still had plenty of history left to cover
TV Insider reports that Series 3 covers approximately 1848 to 1851. Its finale ends with Prince Albert collapsing after the Great Exhibition, creating a major unresolved question rather than closing Victoria’s story.

Historically, Albert died in 1861, according to the TV Insider reporting. That leaves roughly a decade of significant events between the end of Series 3 and his death, followed by the later years of Victoria’s reign. The writers therefore had substantial historical material available for another installment.
The cliffhanger appears to have been designed as a possible continuation point. It was not a definitive ending to Victoria’s reign, and TV Insider describes the finale as leaving the door open to a future series.

Daisy Goodwin had planned to continue the drama
Creator Daisy Goodwin had previously indicated that the series was not intended to stop at the point reached in Series 3. In March 2019, she said she knew where the story was going and expected Series 4 to be “amazing,” RadioTimes and TV Insider reported.
Goodwin also acknowledged that the principal roles would eventually need to be recast as the characters aged. She hoped that would not happen immediately, but the production could not use the same actors indefinitely while portraying several more decades of real history.
Recasting Victoria was discussed, but it never happened. Coleman had mentioned Imelda Staunton as a possible successor; Staunton was later cast as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown. No official recast for Victoria was announced.
Was Jenna Coleman the reason the show stopped?
It would be misleading to say that Coleman simply quit. The documented record shows that she described the continuation as a break, remained open to returning, and discussed waiting until she was older before attempting to play an older Victoria.
Her comments do suggest that continuing immediately with the existing lead was difficult. But that is different from announcing that she had left the production or that ITV ended the show because of her.

Was it canceled because of low ratings?
