There is no official “Gear 1.” Luffy’s ordinary state is called his base form. The numbered techniques begin with Gear 2 and continue through Gear 5. Each Gear changes how Luffy uses his rubber body, while Gear 5 reveals that the fruit he believed was the Gum-Gum Fruit has a much more important identity.
| Form | Main function | First anime appearance |
|---|---|---|
| Base Luffy | Normal rubber body and fighting style | Episode 1 |
| Gear 2 | Speed and increased physical power | Episode 272 |
| Gear 3 | Large-scale attacks and impact force | Episode 288 |
| Gear 4: Boundman | Balanced power, defense, and mobility | Episode 726 |
| Gear 4: Tankman | Defense and counterattacking | Episode 806 |
| Gear 4: Snakeman | Speed and unpredictable attack paths | Episode 870 |
| Gear 5 | Awakened Mythical Zoan abilities | Episode 1071 |
Base Luffy: the form sometimes incorrectly called Gear 1
Luffy’s normal state is not officially named Gear 1. Before using any numbered Gear, he fights with the ordinary properties of his rubber body: stretching his limbs, absorbing some blunt impacts, and using elastic attacks such as Gomu Gomu no Pistol.
The distinction matters because the numbered Gears are techniques Luffy developed to push his Devil Fruit abilities further. “Base Luffy” is therefore a form or state, not the first entry in an official Gear progression.

Gear 2: speed through accelerated circulation
Gear 2, or Gear Second, uses Luffy’s elastic body as a biological pump. By forcing blood through his body at high speed, Luffy temporarily boosts his movement, reaction speed, strength, and attack power.
The idea was partly inspired by Luffy watching CP9 use Soru, also called Shave. Soru allows its users to move so quickly that they appear to vanish. Gear 2 gives Luffy a way to reach comparable combat speeds without learning the technique in the same way.
What Gear 2 changes
- It greatly increases Luffy’s speed and acceleration.
- It makes his ordinary rubber attacks more powerful and difficult to avoid.
- It produces steam from his body, creating the form’s distinctive appearance.
- It is primarily a speed-focused technique rather than a size-changing transformation.
Gear 2 first appears in the anime in Episode 272, during Luffy’s fight with Blueno at Enies Lobby. The reveal demonstrates that Luffy can use his body in a more technical way instead of relying only on stretching and raw creativity.
Gear 2’s drawbacks
Early Gear 2 placed severe stress on Luffy’s body and consumed enormous amounts of energy. Prolonged use was even described as a threat to his lifespan. After the two-year timeskip, Luffy gained much finer control and no longer suffered the same immediately obvious side effects, but Gear 2 still consumes stamina. It is not a completely cost-free speed mode.

A common mistake is to describe Gear 2 as a supernatural “blood-pressure engine.” The more accurate explanation is that Luffy uses his rubber physiology to pump blood through his body at high speed.
Gear 3: inflating the bones
Gear 3, or Gear Third, focuses on size and impact. Luffy bites into his thumb and blows air into his thumb bone. He then transfers that air through his skeletal system to enlarge a limb or another body part.
The result is a giant fist, foot, or other oversized attack with a much larger impact area than Luffy’s normal techniques. Gear 3 is especially useful when Luffy needs destructive force rather than Gear 2’s rapid movement.
What Gear 3 changes
- It enlarges individual limbs and body parts.
- It increases the scale and impact of Luffy’s attacks.
- It is slower and less agile than Gear 2.
- It can be combined with other techniques and, later, with Haki.
Gear 3 was teased during the Blueno confrontation and first fully shown during Luffy’s battle with Rob Lucci. Its first anime appearance is generally listed as Episode 288.

Gear 3’s original drawback
In its early form, Gear 3 caused Luffy to shrink into a child-sized version of himself after he released the technique. The temporary loss of size made him less effective immediately after using it. Following the timeskip, Luffy mastered Gear 3 enough to remove this shrinking drawback.
Gear 2 and Gear 3 are not mutually exclusive. Luffy can use both at the same time, combining Gear 2’s increased speed with Gear 3’s oversized attacks.
Another frequent misconception is that Gear 3 inflates Luffy’s muscles. Its defining mechanism is air inflation of the bones, beginning with the thumb bone. The enlarged muscle-based techniques belong more closely to Gear 4.
Gear 4: inflated muscles, Haki, and compressed force
Gear 4 combines several elements: Luffy inflates his muscles with air, coats his body with Armament Haki, and compresses and releases his rubbery body to generate exceptional force.
Unlike Gear 3, which mainly enlarges a limb through bone inflation, Gear 4 changes Luffy’s entire combat structure. His inflated muscles provide power and unusual movement, while Armament Haki gives the form greater striking and defensive ability.
Gear 4 also lets Luffy remain airborne. By kicking against the air with tremendous force, he uses a movement method comparable to CP9’s Geppō, or Moon Walk.
Gear 4 first appears in manga Chapter 784 and anime Episode 726. It has several configurations, each designed for a different combat problem.
Boundman, also called Bounceman
Boundman—often localized as Bounceman—is Gear 4’s primary balanced combat form. The two names refer to the same form, not two separate transformations.

Boundman emphasizes power, defense, compression, and aerial mobility. Luffy’s inflated body constantly rebounds, making ordinary movement and stable footing difficult. That same spring-like quality allows him to launch extremely forceful attacks.
The form is well suited to overwhelming a powerful opponent with high-impact blows. Its weaknesses are reduced precision and awkward ground movement. Luffy can be difficult to control while bouncing, and he cannot use the form indefinitely because it consumes Haki and stamina.
Tankman
Tankman is Gear 4’s heavily enlarged defensive configuration. It focuses on absorbing or resisting attacks, then using Luffy’s inflated body to repel an opponent with tremendous force.
The version shown against Charlotte Cracker is specifically Tankman: Manpuku Version, also translated as the Stuffed or Full version. Luffy reaches this size after eating an enormous quantity of biscuits.

It is a distinct Gear 4 configuration with a defensive purpose, even though the story first shows its fullest version under unusual circumstances.
Snakeman
Snakeman trades some of Boundman’s bulk for speed and attack flexibility. It is designed for opponents who can predict or react to conventional attack paths.
In Snakeman, Luffy’s attacks can change direction repeatedly. A punch that appears to miss can curve back toward its target, making the timing and angle difficult to read. This gives Snakeman a different kind of speed from Gear 2: it is not only about moving faster, but also about making attacks behave unpredictably.
Snakeman debuts during Luffy’s fight with Charlotte Katakuri. It remains a Gear 4 variation, not Gear 5 and not a Devil Fruit awakening. It still relies on inflated muscles and Armament Haki.

Gear 5: the awakened Nika form
Gear 5 is not simply a stronger version of Gear 4. It is the awakened form of Luffy’s Devil Fruit.
For most of the story, Luffy and the world believe he ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, or Gomu Gomu no Mi. Its concealed identity is the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, or Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika—a Mythical Zoan. The World Government hid this identity by renaming and reclassifying the fruit.
The awakening gives Luffy much greater freedom over his rubber-like body. He can fight in exaggerated shapes, stretch and distort himself in unusual ways, and apply rubber-like properties to parts of the environment and even other living beings. The form is associated with the legendary Sun God Nika and is presented as an exceptionally free and “ridiculous” power.
Gear 5’s appearance and abilities
- Luffy’s hair and clothing turn white.
- A distinctive white, cloud-like ring forms around his neck and shoulders.
- His movements become highly elastic and cartoonishly exaggerated.
- He can manipulate the surrounding terrain, including using the ground to block or redirect attacks.
- He can extend rubber-like properties beyond his own body.
Gear 5 first appears in manga Chapter 1044, which also reveals the fruit’s true identity and Luffy’s awakening. Its first anime appearance is Episode 1071, “Luffy’s Peak—Attained! Fifth Gear,” which originally aired in Japan on August 6, 2023. The English dub premiered in the United States on May 5, 2024.
Gear 5’s limitations
Gear 5 is extraordinarily powerful, but it is not unlimited reality manipulation. Its effects come from the awakened Nika fruit’s rubber-like properties and Luffy’s imaginative use of them.
The form also has a major endurance cost. Prolonged use can leave Luffy severely exhausted. When Gear 5 ends, he may temporarily appear aged or physically depleted before recovering. The transformation gives him more freedom, not infinite stamina.
Gear 5 should also not be described as “perfected Gear 4.” Gear 4 is a Haki-based technique built around inflated muscles and compressed force. Gear 5 is the awakening of the fruit’s true Mythical Zoan power. The two forms are connected by Luffy’s creativity and rubber body, but they work on fundamentally different principles.

The simplest way to classify Luffy’s power system is to separate Gears, which change how he applies his Devil Fruit, from Haki, which is an independent combat ability that can be layered onto those forms.
How Luffy’s Gears developed
- Base form: Luffy uses the ordinary elasticity of his body.
- Gear 2: He turns that elasticity into a speed and circulation technique.
- Gear 3: He uses air in his bones to create oversized attacks.
- Gear 4: He combines inflated muscles, Armament Haki, compression, and high-speed movement.
- Gear 5: He awakens the true Nika fruit and gains far greater freedom over his rubber-like abilities.
This progression is not just a scale from small to large. Gear 2 solves a speed problem, Gear 3 solves a power-and-range problem, the Gear 4 forms specialize in different combat roles, and Gear 5 changes the rules by awakening the Devil Fruit.
FAQ
Is Base Luffy Gear 1?
No. “Gear 1” is an unofficial fan label. Luffy’s ordinary state is his base form, and the numbered canon Gears begin with Gear 2.
Which Gear is the fastest?
Gear 2 is Luffy’s dedicated speed-focused Gear. Among Gear 4 configurations, Snakeman emphasizes rapid attacks and unpredictable changes in direction.
Can Luffy use Gear 2 and Gear 3 together?
Yes. The two techniques are not mutually exclusive, and Luffy can combine Gear 2’s speed with Gear 3’s enlarged attacks.
Is Tankman the same as Boundman?
No. Both are Gear 4 configurations, but Boundman is the balanced combat form while Tankman is focused more heavily on defense and repelling attacks. Bounceman is simply another localization of Boundman.
Is Snakeman Gear 5?
No. Snakeman is a speed-focused Gear 4 variation. It uses inflated muscles and Armament Haki and is not an awakened form.
What Devil Fruit does Luffy really have?
The fruit publicly known as the Gum-Gum Fruit is actually the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan whose identity was concealed by the World Government.

The Bottom Line
Luffy has four numbered canon Gears: Gear 2, Gear 3, Gear 4, and Gear 5. Gear 2 prioritizes speed, Gear 3 creates massive bone-inflated attacks, and Gear 4 uses inflated muscles and Armament Haki through specialized forms such as Boundman, Tankman, and Snakeman. Gear 5 is different from the earlier techniques: it is the awakening of the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, and gives Luffy far greater freedom over his rubber-like powers.
