An Android phone that restarts once after an update is usually not a crisis. Reboots that happen repeatedly—while opening one app, during charging, at the logo screen, or even when the phone is idle—need a more methodical diagnosis.

The most likely causes are a faulty downloaded app, very low internal storage, an update-related boot loop, a case or accessory pressing a button, or (on supported Samsung devices) a failing SD card. Work through the fixes below in order. The early steps are reversible; the factory reset is not.

First, identify the restart pattern

What you observe What it suggests
The phone restarts when one app opens That app, or its interaction with the current Android version, is a leading suspect.
It restarts after a system update and never reaches the home screen This may be an update-related boot loop rather than an ordinary app crash.
It restarts when placed in a case or connected to a battery pack A button may be pressed, or an accessory may be interfering with a sensor.
It restarts with an SD card installed The card or its contents may be contributing to the problem, particularly on Samsung devices.
It restarts even in Safe mode A downloaded app is less likely. System software, storage, an accessory, removable storage, or hardware remain possible.

Do not confuse low storage with low RAM. Google’s troubleshooting guidance identifies insufficient internal storage as a possible cause; it does not identify ordinary RAM usage as the usual reason for repeated system reboots. “RAM cleaner” apps and closing every background app are not a reliable fix for this problem.

1. Install the Android system update

An update may contain a fix for a system crash, so check for one before removing apps or resetting the phone.

Anker USB C to USB C Cable, 60W Fast Charging Cable (2-Pack, 6 ft, Black)
  • Durable Design: Reinforced nylon exterior and a robust core ensure this cable withstands up to 5,000 bends, outlasting other brands
  • Fast Charging: Supports Power Delivery for up to 60W high-speed charging when paired with a USB-C charger
  • Versatile Compatibility: Works with virtually all USB-C devices, including phones, tablets, and laptops
  • High-Speed Data Transfer: Transfer files quickly with 480Mbps data transfer speeds
  • Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Try System → Software update.
  3. On some phones, use About phone or About tablet → Software update.
  4. Install any available update, then allow the phone to restart.

Manufacturers rename and relocate these controls. Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other brands may not use Google’s exact labels.

If the restarting began during or immediately after an update and the phone is stuck showing the manufacturer logo, treat it as a possible boot loop. Samsung provides separate boot-loop troubleshooting for that situation; repeatedly attempting normal restarts may not resolve it.

2. Free at least 10% of internal storage

Google says Android phones can begin having problems when less than 10% of internal storage is free. Check the storage screen in Settings—the exact path differs by manufacturer—and remove or move large files, downloaded videos, unused apps, and old photos after confirming they are backed up.

Focus on internal storage, not the amount of RAM shown in a memory screen. You do not need to delete everything or constantly “clean” memory. The useful target is simply to restore a reasonable amount of free space, preferably more than the 10% danger zone, and then test the phone again.

3. Update every installed app

An app that is incompatible with the current Android release can crash or destabilize the phone. Update apps through Google Play:

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Manage apps & devices.
  4. Under Updates available, tap Update all, or update individual apps.

If the phone restarts before the Play Store stays open long enough to finish, skip to Safe mode. Downloaded apps are temporarily disabled there, which gives you a way to investigate without allowing the suspected app to run normally.

4. Force-stop a suspected app

Use this step for an app that appears connected to the restarts—for example, the phone reboots whenever a particular game, security tool, launcher, or messaging app starts. Do not force-stop every app as routine maintenance.

Depending on the Android version, open one of these paths:

  • Settings → Apps → select the app → Force stop
  • Settings → Apps & notifications → select the app → Force stop

Write down which apps you force-stop and whether the restart returns. If the problem disappears after stopping one app, update it, remove it, or contact its developer rather than repeatedly force-stopping it.

5. Test the phone in Safe mode

Safe mode temporarily turns off all downloaded apps while leaving the phone’s original software available. The method for entering Safe mode is manufacturer-specific; there is no universal Android button combination.

On a current Samsung phone, open the power menu, touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode option appears, then tap Safe mode. For other brands, check the manufacturer’s instructions for that model.

Use the phone in Safe mode long enough to reproduce the issue:

  • Restarts stop: a downloaded app is a leading suspect.
  • Restarts continue: a downloaded app is less likely. Investigate storage, accessories, removable storage, system software, and possible hardware problems.

To leave Safe mode, restart the phone normally. If the problem stopped there, continue with the next step rather than reinstalling every app at once.

6. Remove recently installed apps one at a time

Do not assume the newest app is automatically guilty. Use one-at-a-time removal as a controlled test:

  1. Restart the phone normally.
  2. Uninstall one recently downloaded app.
  3. Restart the phone again.
  4. Use it long enough to see whether the reboot returns.
  5. Repeat with the next suspected app if necessary.

When the restarts stop, you have a strong suspect. Reinstall other removed apps individually if you need them, but avoid reinstalling the app that triggered the problem unless its developer has released a confirmed fix. Reinstalling the same app—or restoring it automatically after a reset—can bring the issue back.

7. Remove the case, battery pack, and other accessories

Take off the case and disconnect accessories before running another test. Google specifically recommends removing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The phone case
  • An external battery pack
  • Other connected accessories

A tight case or battery pack can press the power or volume buttons. An accessory may also cover a sensor or create a problem only when the phone is connected. Pay particular attention if the restart happens when you place the phone in its case, connect it to a battery pack, or handle it near the side buttons.

8. Test the removable SD card on a Samsung device

Many Android phones have no SD-card slot, so this step applies only to models that support removable storage. Samsung lists SD-card problems as a possible cause of freezing, crashes, and repeated reboots, separately from downloaded-app problems.

If the restarts began after inserting, moving, or filling an SD card, power down the phone and remove or test the card according to the model’s instructions. Do not assume that every Android phone has an Unmount SD card menu or that the same removal procedure works on every Galaxy model. If the phone behaves normally without the card, back up its contents and replace or reformat it only after confirming that the data is safe.

9. Factory-reset the phone only after backing it up

A factory reset is advanced troubleshooting, not the first response to random restarting. It removes the phone’s data, uninstalls apps and their associated data, and may require the Google or Samsung account credentials previously used on the device during setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before resetting:

  • Back up photos, contacts, messages, files, and authenticator or two-factor recovery information.
  • Confirm that important data is synchronized to the correct Google account or another backup location.
  • Make sure you know the phone’s screen lock and associated account credentials.
  • Remove or test the SD card if applicable.

Open the phone’s Settings and look for Factory data reset, usually under a System or General management section. The precise menu depends on the manufacturer. If the phone is blank or unresponsive, physical buttons may provide a recovery reset option, but the exact procedure is model-specific.

A reset does not guarantee a hardware problem will be fixed. Afterward, test the phone before restoring every app. If you immediately restore the same problematic app or its data, the restarts may return. Persistent rebooting on a clean, updated phone—especially when it also occurs in Safe mode—warrants manufacturer support or a repair assessment.

What not to waste time on

  • Clearing the cache partition: this is device-specific and is not a universal step in Google’s current Android restart procedure.
  • Closing all background apps: routine RAM clearing is not the same as fixing insufficient storage or a crashing app.
  • Repeating a factory reset: a reset can erase data without fixing a failing component or an update-related fault.
  • Following one “universal” Safe mode key combination: the entry method varies by manufacturer and model.

When the problem needs repair

Arrange manufacturer or professional support if the phone keeps restarting after a clean factory reset, cannot complete startup, becomes unusually hot, shows physical or liquid damage, or restarts in Safe mode with no accessory or SD card attached. Those results do not prove a hardware defect, but they make a simple downloaded-app problem much less likely.

FAQ

Why does my Android phone keep restarting by itself?

The common possibilities are a crashing downloaded app, less than 10% free internal storage, an unfinished or faulty update, a case or accessory pressing a button, or a problematic removable SD card on supported devices. Restarts that continue in Safe mode are less likely to be caused by a downloaded app.

Can low RAM make an Android phone restart repeatedly?

Routine RAM usage is not the same as low internal storage. Google’s current restart and crash guidance specifically identifies insufficient storage as a possible problem, not ordinary background RAM usage. Free internal storage and investigate apps instead of relying on RAM-cleaner tools.

How do I enter Safe mode on Android?

There is no single Android-wide button sequence. The procedure varies by manufacturer and model. On current Samsung phones, open the power menu, touch and hold Power off, then tap Safe mode when it appears.

Will a factory reset stop Android from restarting?

It may remove a software or app-related cause, but it is not guaranteed to fix restarting. A factory reset erases the phone’s data and apps. Back up first, and test the phone before automatically restoring all apps.

Should I remove the SD card if my Samsung phone keeps rebooting?

If the model has removable storage and the problem began after the card was inserted, moved, or filled, test the phone without it using Samsung’s model-specific instructions. Many Android phones do not have an SD-card slot.

The Bottom Line

Start with an Android update, adequate free internal storage, and updated apps. Then use Safe mode to separate downloaded-app problems from broader faults, remove suspects one at a time, and test the phone without its case, accessories, or—where applicable—SD card. Back up before considering a factory reset; if restarting continues on a clean phone, contact the manufacturer or a repair service.
