Pair a Garmin watch from the Garmin Connect app—not from your phone’s Bluetooth settings. A Bluetooth pairing created manually in Android or iOS may make the watch appear connected while Garmin Connect still cannot sync it correctly.

Before starting, install or update Garmin Connect, keep the watch and phone within 10 metres (33 feet), and make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone. If the watch is new, it will often enter pairing mode during its first startup.

Pair a Garmin watch with an Android phone

  1. Install and open Garmin Connect from Google Play, then sign in to your Garmin account.
  2. On the watch, open its pairing screen. The exact wording varies by model. Look under Settings → Bluetooth or Settings → Phone → Pair Mobile Device / Pair Phone.

For an Instinct, hold MENU, then select Settings → Pair Phone.

  3. In Garmin Connect, select More (usually at the bottom right).
  4. Go to Garmin Devices → Add Device.
  5. Select your watch when it appears, then choose Start or Connect it.
  6. Check the six-digit code shown on the watch. Enter it in Garmin Connect, or confirm that the code shown in the app matches the watch.
  7. Follow the remaining setup prompts. Garmin Connect may ask for notification, location, contacts, or other permissions depending on your phone and watch.

When setup and the first synchronization finish, return to the Garmin Connect Home page. A green dot beside the device indicates that the watch is connected to the phone.

Pair a Garmin watch with an iPhone or iPad

  1. Install and open Garmin Connect from the App Store, then sign in.
  2. Put the watch into pairing mode. Depending on the model, use Settings → Bluetooth or Settings → Phone → Pair Mobile Device / Pair Phone. A new watch may already be in this mode.
  3. In Garmin Connect, select More → Garmin Devices → Add Device.
  4. Choose Find Nearby Accessories if Garmin Connect displays that option.
  5. Select the watch when it is found, then select Set Up.
  6. Confirm that the six-digit code on the watch matches the code in Garmin Connect.
  7. Select Done and complete the on-screen setup.

Do not begin by selecting the watch in Settings → Bluetooth. If you have already done that, remove the Bluetooth entry before retrying the Garmin Connect setup.

What to do if the watch is not found

Try these steps in order:

  1. Move the watch and phone close together—ideally within a metre while pairing.
  2. Confirm that the watch is still displaying its pairing screen.
  3. Turn the phone’s Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.
  4. Close and reopen Garmin Connect.
  5. Restart both the phone and the Garmin watch.
  6. Return to Garmin Connect → More → Garmin Devices → Add Device and try again.

Also check whether the watch is already registered under More → Garmin Devices. A watch that is still listed there may not appear as a new device. Remove the old entry before attempting to add it again.

Repair a Garmin watch that was paired incorrectly

This is the most reliable cleanup procedure when the watch appears in Bluetooth but will not sync in Garmin Connect.

1. Remove it from Garmin Connect

  1. Open Garmin Connect.
  2. Go to More → Garmin Devices.
  3. Select the affected watch.
  4. Tap the three-dot menu (⋮).
  5. Select Remove Device and confirm.

2. Remove the phone’s Bluetooth record

On many Android phones, open Settings → Connections → Bluetooth, tap the gear icon beside the Garmin watch, select Unpair, and confirm.

On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Bluetooth, tap the ⓘ beside the Garmin device, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. Garmin recommends powering both devices off and on afterward.

On Garmin Connect version 5.21 or newer, removing the device in Garmin Connect may also remove its phone Bluetooth record. Check the phone’s Bluetooth list anyway, because the result can depend on the device and operating system.

3. Add it again through Garmin Connect

Put the watch back into pairing mode, then use More → Garmin Devices → Add Device. Confirm the six-digit code and complete setup. Do not recreate the pairing from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.

Fix a “Pairing failed” message

For a pairing failure during setup, Garmin’s first-line fix is to restart both the phone and Garmin device, toggle the phone’s Bluetooth off and on, and retry. If that does not work, use the full remove-and-repair procedure above.

Pair the watch with Garmin Connect first. Garmin Explore normally pairs with the watch automatically after the Garmin Connect pairing succeeds; it should not be set up as an independent first pairing.

For the cited Explore pairing flow, Garmin Connect must be version 4.11 or later. The setup sequence is:

Check that pairing is working

A successful Bluetooth connection is only part of the setup. Open Garmin Connect and manually synchronize once. Check that recent activities, steps, battery status, and watch settings appear in the app. The green dot on the Garmin Connect Home page should remain visible when the phone and watch are connected.

If the watch connects only when Garmin Connect is open, review the app’s battery and background-activity permissions. Android manufacturers often restrict background apps, which can delay notifications and automatic synchronization even after pairing has succeeded.

FAQ

Should I pair my Garmin watch from my phone’s Bluetooth settings?

No. Garmin’s supported setup method is to add the watch through Garmin Connect using More → Garmin Devices → Add Device. If you pair it from the phone’s Bluetooth menu first, remove that Bluetooth record and set it up again through Garmin Connect.

How close should my Garmin watch be to my phone?

Keep the devices within 10 metres (33 feet) during setup. For the most reliable first pairing, place them close together and avoid other Bluetooth pairing screens nearby.

Where is pairing mode on a Garmin watch?

The menu differs by model. Common paths are Settings → Bluetooth or Settings → Phone → Pair Mobile Device / Pair Phone. On an Instinct, hold MENU and select Settings → Pair Phone.

Why does my Garmin watch show in Bluetooth but not Garmin Connect?

It was likely paired outside the supported Garmin Connect process, or an old pairing record is interfering. Remove the watch from Garmin Connect, unpair or forget it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, restart both devices, and add it again through Garmin Connect.

Yes. Removing the device from Garmin Connect deletes its Garmin Pay wallets. You must recreate the wallet and add the payment cards after pairing the watch again.

What does the green dot in Garmin Connect mean?

After setup and synchronization, the green dot on the Garmin Connect Home page indicates that the Garmin device is connected to the mobile device.

The Bottom Line

Use Garmin Connect → More → Garmin Devices → Add Device to pair the watch. Put the watch into pairing mode, confirm the six-digit code, and keep both devices within 10 metres. If pairing fails, remove old Garmin and Bluetooth records, restart both devices, and repeat the setup in Garmin Connect rather than the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
