Trolls are easier to manage when you match the response to the behavior. A harmless nuisance may only need a mute or keyword filter; repeated abuse, threats, impersonation, or unwanted messages call for blocking and reporting. The goal is to reduce their access to you without giving them more attention than necessary.
1. Mute the account instead of engaging
Use mute when you want to stop seeing someone’s posts without unfollowing or blocking them. The account is not notified.
On X
- From a post, select the More icon, then choose Mute.
- From the account’s profile, select More, then Mute.
Muting removes the account’s posts from your timeline, but it does not stop the person from following you, sending Direct Messages, or mentioning you. If you follow the muted account, its replies and mentions can still appear in your Notifications tab. If you do not follow it, those replies and mentions are excluded from notifications.

To review muted accounts on X.com, go to More → Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Mute and block → Muted accounts.
2. Restrict the person on Instagram
Instagram’s Restrict feature is useful when you want to reduce interaction without the visibility and escalation that can come with blocking. A restricted person’s new comments on your posts are initially visible only to that person. You can choose See comment → Approve → Approve to make one public, or select Delete.
You also stop receiving notifications for future comments from that account. Restriction hides your online status and read receipts from the restricted person.
Ways to restrict an Instagram account
- From a comment: Open the post’s comments, tap and hold the comment, then select Restrict account.
- From the profile: Open the person’s profile, select Options, then Restrict.
- From settings: Go to Profile → Menu → Restricted → Next, search for the account, and select Restrict.
Instagram Lite does not provide the same settings path. Meta says restriction in Lite must be done through the person’s profile.

Mute and Restrict reduce what reaches you; blocking is the stronger option when the person keeps contacting you or targeting your posts.
What blocking does on X
From a post or profile, select More → Block → Block. A blocked account cannot follow you, send Direct Messages, like, reply, repost, add your account to lists, or tag you in a photo. If you were following each other, X automatically removes both follows. Unblocking does not restore the follow automatically.
Blocking does not send a notification, although the person can discover it by visiting your profile. If your posts are public, the blocked account may still read them, but cannot engage with them. Protected posts are not visible to blocked accounts.

What blocking does on Instagram
Instagram’s blocking controls can remove the blocked person’s comments and likes from your posts. Instagram also provides options for blocking someone from commenting, blocking from a profile, and blocking newly created accounts associated with the same person.
Recommended Free Tools
Blocking is not the same as reporting. If the behavior violates platform rules, report it separately.
4. Report harassment, threats, impersonation, or spam
Report behavior that breaks the platform’s rules rather than reporting someone merely because you dislike their opinion. Save screenshots, profile URLs, and dates first if the conduct may matter later.
Instagram’s reporting category for targeted abuse is harassment or bullying. Meta says this can be used for an account created to bully or harass, or for a photo or comment intended to do so. To report a comment, use the comment’s reporting control. Instagram may then offer Restrict or Block.
X
From a post, select More → Report. X lists abuse, sensitive media, impersonation, and spam among reportable violations. Reporting sends the post or account for platform review; muting and blocking only control your interaction with it.

5. Filter the words the troll keeps using
Keyword filters help when the problem is a recurring insult, slogan, hashtag, username, or phrase rather than one account. They can also reduce exposure to a wider pile-on.
Muted words on X
In the mobile app, open the Notifications tab, select the gear icon, choose Muted words or Muted → Muted words, and select Add. On the web, use More → Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Mute and block → Muted words → plus icon.
Add one word, phrase, username, emoji, or hashtag at a time. You can apply the filter to the Home timeline, Notifications, or both. For notifications, choose From anyone or From people you don’t follow. The available durations are Forever, 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days.
Muted words are case-insensitive, and muting unicorn also mutes #unicorn. To filter mentions of a particular account without muting the whole account, include the @ sign, such as @example.
There are limitations: keyword muting does not remove matching posts from search results. It may also fail to suppress a mobile notification generated specifically because an account you follow posted, even if that post contains a muted word.
Hidden Words on Instagram
Instagram’s Hidden Words system can filter offensive words, phrases, and emojis into a hidden folder. It covers abusive content in comments and message requests. This is useful for recurring language, while Restrict is better when one particular account is the problem.
6. Mute a whole X conversation
If a troll has pulled you into a long reply chain, mute the conversation instead of dealing with every notification.
- Open the detailed view of the post or reply in the conversation.
- Select the More icon.
- Choose Mute this conversation and confirm.
This stops new notifications about that conversation. It does not remove the posts from your timeline or from the original post’s detail view. It also does not mute the account, so the same person may still appear elsewhere on X.
7. Tighten who can reach you
When a public post attracts a wave of abuse, changing your visibility and interaction settings can prevent the next round from becoming as disruptive.
Protect posts on X
Enable protected posts through X’s privacy settings. Protected posts are visible only to followers, and new followers must be accepted or declined.
Protection does not remove people who already follow you. Existing followers remain followers automatically. To remove a specific existing follower, X says you must block that account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Instagram’s Limits feature is designed to temporarily reduce unwanted comments and messages from groups of accounts, particularly during a sudden wave of attention. Hidden Words can filter offensive comments and message requests.

| You want to manage their Instagram comments quietly | Restrict | Keeps new comments visible only to that person until you approve them |
| The person keeps messaging or targeting you | Block | Stops direct interaction and engagement features |
| The content violates platform rules | Report | Submits the account or post for platform review |
| The same words or hashtags keep appearing | Muted words or Hidden Words | Filters matching content across relevant areas |
| One X reply chain will not stop generating alerts | Mute this conversation | Stops notifications for that thread only |
| A public post has triggered a pile-on | Protected posts, Limits, or Hidden Words | Reduces who can see or interact with future content |
When the behavior is threatening
Do not argue with threats or publish the person’s private information in response. Preserve evidence, report the content, block the account, and review your account’s privacy settings. If there is a credible threat of physical harm, stalking, extortion, or exposure of private information, contact the relevant local authorities and keep the original evidence available.
FAQ
Does muting tell the troll they were muted?
No. X does not notify an account when you mute it. However, mute does not stop the account from following you, sending Direct Messages, or mentioning you.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does blocking automatically report a social media account?
No. Blocking and reporting are separate controls. Block the account to stop direct interaction, then use the platform’s report option if the content violates its rules.
What is the difference between muting an X account and muting a conversation?
Muting an account removes its posts from your timeline. Muting a conversation only stops notifications from one thread; the account and its other posts can still appear.
Can a restricted Instagram user see their own comments?
Yes. A restricted person can see their new comment, but other people cannot see it unless you approve it. You can also delete the comment instead.
Can protected X posts remove existing followers?
No. Protecting posts does not retroactively remove existing followers. To remove a particular follower, X says you must block that account.
The Bottom Line
Use the least disruptive control that solves the problem: mute for unwanted visibility, Restrict for quiet Instagram moderation, block for unwanted contact, and report for rule-breaking behavior. Add keyword filters or broader limits when the abuse arrives in waves. If the person makes threats or exposes private information, preserve evidence and escalate rather than continuing the exchange.
