Windows 11’s current Notepad app can keep multiple documents in one window as tabs. Each tab is still a separate document, so you can edit a text file, create a new note, and switch between them without combining their contents.
There is no Enable tabs switch in Windows Settings. Notepad tabs appear when the installed Notepad app version supports them. If the tab interface is missing, update Notepad through the Microsoft Store.
Open Notepad
- Select Start.
- Type Notepad.
- Select Notepad from the search results.
When tabs are available, the Notepad window displays a tab strip near the top. The menus and controls may vary slightly depending on your installed app version.
Set files to open in tabs
You can choose whether files opened from Notepad use a new tab, a new window, or a prompt each time.

- Open Notepad.
- Select the Settings gear in the upper-right corner.
- Find the Opening files section.
- Open the Open files in dropdown.
- Select New tab.
After selecting New tab, a file opened through File > Open is added as a tab in the current Notepad window.

Create and open tabs
Create a blank tab
In Notepad, select File > New tab. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+N.
The new tab is a separate, unsaved document. Type your text, then use File > Save as to give it a file name and choose a location.
Open an existing file in a tab
- Select File > Open.
- Choose a text file.
- Select Open.
If Settings > Opening files > Open files in is set to New tab, the file opens in a new tab in the current window. If the setting is Ask me what I want to do, choose the tab option when Notepad asks.
Open a file in a separate window
To create a separate Notepad window, select File > New window. The shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+N.
You can also open a file in a separate window without permanently changing your default. Use File > Open, select the file, and choose Open in new window when that option is offered. Another method is to temporarily select New window under Settings > Opening files > Open files in.

Switch between Notepad tabs
Select any tab in the tab strip to make it active. For keyboard navigation, use:

Tabs retain their own document contents and editing state. Switching tabs does not copy text from one document into another.
Reorder or detach a tab
Reorder tabs
Drag a tab left or right along the tab strip and release it in the desired position.
Move a tab to a new window
Right-click the tab and select Move tab to new window. This separates that document from the current tab group and places it in its own Notepad window.
If you do not see this command, your installed Notepad build may not support tab detachment. The basic tab features can still work even when this command is unavailable.
Close a tab or window
Close the active tab
Use any of these methods:
- Select the X on the tab.
- Select File > Close tab.
- Press Ctrl+W.
Closing a tab closes only that document. The other tabs in the same Notepad window remain open.

Close the entire Notepad window
Select the window’s X button or choose File > Close window. If several tabs contain unsaved changes, Notepad prompts you about each affected document before closing.
Handle unsaved changes
When you close a tab containing edits that have not been saved, Notepad displays a save prompt. Choose:
- Save to write the changes to the document.
- Don’t Save to close the tab and discard the changes.
- Cancel to keep the tab open.
The prompt applies to the individual tab and document. Notepad does not treat all tabs as one combined file, and saving one tab does not save changes made in another.
What each tab represents
A Notepad tab is simply another open document inside the same application window. Each tab has its own:

For example, opening notes.txt and todo.txt in two tabs does not merge them into one file. Editing and saving notes.txt changes only that file.
Notepad tabs versus Windows Alt+Tab settings
Do not use the Windows multitasking settings to enable Notepad tabs. The setting at Settings > System > Multitasking controls which app tabs Windows displays when you use Alt+Tab or snap windows. It does not control the document tabs inside Notepad.

The related Windows option is labeled Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab. Its choices can include 20 most recent tabs, 5 most recent tabs, 3 most recent tabs, and Don’t show tabs. Changing this setting will not add or remove the tab strip in Notepad.
What to do if Notepad has no tabs
If Notepad opens without a tab strip or tab-related commands, first update the app:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Allow Microsoft Store to update Notepad if an update is available.
- Open Notepad again.
Notepad is distributed and updated as a Microsoft Store app, so a Windows feature update is not the only way it can receive new capabilities. Tabs are not normally controlled by whether Windows is Home, Pro, or Enterprise. The installed Notepad build, its update state, and possible organization-managed app restrictions are the practical factors.
A registry hack is not the normal solution. Also, Microsoft’s Notepad help page documents features such as launching the app, printing, .LOG files, and header and footer commands; it does not provide a separate “Enable tabs” procedure.
Do not confuse tabs with Notepad’s .LOG feature
The .LOG command is unrelated to tabs. To create an automatically timestamped log:
- Open a blank Notepad document.
- Type
.LOGon the first line. - Press Enter.
- Select File > Save as.
- Enter a file name and select Save.
When you reopen the file, Notepad appends the current date and time. You can keep this log in one tab, but the timestamp behavior comes from the .LOG instruction, not from the tab feature.

FAQ
Is there an Enable tabs option in Windows 11 Settings?
No. Notepad tabs are an app feature, not a Windows Settings feature. There is no supported Enable tabs switch under Settings > System or Settings > Apps.
What is the shortcut for a new Notepad tab?
Press Ctrl+N, or select File > New tab.
How do I open a Notepad file in a new window?
