YouTube no longer supports a separate YouTube username-and-password account for ordinary users. However, you do not need a Gmail address: a Google Account can use an existing Yahoo, Outlook, Hotmail, or other eligible email address.
If you only want to watch videos without linking activity to an account, stay signed out or use YouTube Incognito mode. Those options do not provide account features such as subscriptions, comments, playlists, history, likes, or Watch Later.
Can you sign in to YouTube without a Google Account?
No. YouTube requires a Google Account for account-based sign-in and features. A standalone YouTube account is not a supported sign-in method for current accounts.
You can still open youtube.com and watch videos while signed out, but that is different from signing in. You will not have access to account features such as:

The old advice to sign in with a YouTube username is outdated. Current YouTube sign-in uses the email address and password for the connected Google Account.
Sign in to YouTube with an existing Google Account
On a computer
- Go to youtube.com.
- Click Sign in in the top-right corner.
- Enter the email address for your Google Account.
- Enter your password and complete any requested verification.
The email address does not have to end in @gmail.com. It can be a non-Gmail address that you used when creating the Google Account.
On Android
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap Account.
- Tap Sign in.
- Select an account already added to the device, or tap Accounts to add another one.
On some Android versions, the profile control appears as your profile picture rather than the word Account.
On iPhone or iPad
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Sign in.
- Tap Add account, then follow the Google sign-in prompts.
Create a Google Account without creating a Gmail address
If you do not have a Google Account, you can create one with an existing non-Gmail email address. This lets you sign in to YouTube using, for example, a Yahoo or Hotmail address without creating a new Gmail inbox.

The address must not already be linked to another Google Account. Google also does not allow a Gmail address to be entered as the non-Gmail address for this process.
Android steps
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Sign in.
- Tap Add account.
- Tap Create Account.
- Choose For my personal use, For my child, or For work or my business.
- Follow the prompts and choose the option to use your existing email address instead of creating a Gmail address.
- Verify the email address if Google requests it.
Computer steps
- Open the Google Account sign-up page.
- Choose Create account.
- Select the appropriate account type.
- When Google asks you to choose a Gmail address, select the option to Use your current email address instead.
- Enter your existing non-Gmail address.
- Set a Google Account password and complete the remaining account details.
- Open the verification message sent to your existing email address and confirm it.
- Return to YouTube and sign in with that email address and your new Google Account password.
The address becomes the Google Account sign-in address, even though Google does not host its mailbox. Google may use it for sign-in, password recovery, and account notifications.
Add a non-Gmail address to an existing Google Account
If you already have a Google Account but want to associate another email address with it, use Google Account settings:
- Open myaccount.google.com and sign in.
- Click Personal info.
- Click Email.
- Under Alternate emails, click Add alternate email.
- Enter an email address that you own.
- Click Add.
- Open Google’s verification email at that address and click its verification link.
This does not create a separate YouTube account. It adds an alternate address to the same Google Account. Use the account’s accepted sign-in address when logging in to YouTube.

What to do if you want to browse privately
If your goal is to watch videos without saving activity to your normal signed-in account, you do not need to create another account.
Use YouTube Incognito on mobile
In the YouTube mobile app, open the account menu and select Turn on Incognito when that option is available. YouTube treats the session separately from your signed-in viewing activity, so it does not use that session to update your normal recommendations in the usual way.
Use a private browser window
Open a private or Incognito window in your browser, then visit youtube.com without signing in. This keeps the browser session separate from your normal cookies and signed-in session.
Private browsing is not an anonymous connection. Your network provider, employer, school, website activity systems, or other services may still be able to observe activity. It also does not give you access to subscriptions, comments, playlists, or other signed-in features.

Very old YouTube accounts: the exception
A small number of legacy channels created before May 2009 may not originally have been part of a Google Account. Older channels that were unused and had not been signed into since 2011 may also have been automatically connected to a Brand Account.
This is not a way to create a new YouTube login without Google. It applies only to certain historical channels and requires linking the channel to a Google Account.
Try to recover a qualifying legacy channel
- Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in to the Google Account you want to link.
- Open youtube.com/gaia_link.
- Enter the old YouTube username and password.
- Select Claim channel.
- After linking, sign in to YouTube with the connected Google Account.
- Use Switch account to select the recovered channel.
There is an important limitation: YouTube states that it does not provide a password-recovery option for these old accounts if the legacy YouTube password has been forgotten.
Important account cautions
- Verify the email address. Google or YouTube may require confirmation. Look for a message with the subject Google Email Verification.
- Do not delete the Google Account casually. Deleting it also deletes associated YouTube data, including videos, comments, and subscriptions.
- Android sign-out affects other Google apps. Signing out of YouTube on Android signs that account out of Google apps on the device, including apps such as Gmail and Maps.
- There is no command-line sign-in method. The supported procedures use the YouTube and Google account interfaces; no command or terminal syntax replaces the Google sign-in process.

Do I need Gmail to sign in to YouTube?
