A trim changes the decorative pattern on an armor piece, while the material in the Smithing Table determines its color. It does not increase armor points, toughness, durability, enchantments, or knockback resistance.
That separation makes combinations flexible: diamond armor can use gold, redstone, quartz, or any other valid trim material without becoming gold, redstone, or quartz armor. The suggestions below focus on contrast, theme, resource cost, and how distinctive the finished set looks.
How armor trim combinations work
Every trim has two independent parts:
- Pattern: supplied by an Armor Trim Smithing Template. It controls the shape and placement of the decoration.
- Material: placed in the material slot. It controls the trim’s displayed color.
The armor’s own material remains separate. For example, a diamond chestplate with a gold trim is still a diamond chestplate. A Netherite trim material does not provide Netherite armor stats and is not a substitute for the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template.
Leather armor has one extra visual variable: its dyed base color. That means a leather set can combine a leather dye color with a separate trim color, giving you more room for coordinated or contrasting designs.

Best armor trim combinations
There is no official best combination and no combat ranking because trims are cosmetic. These are practical style picks that give a set a clear identity.
| Combination | Why it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Silence + Amethyst on Netherite | A dark armor base with a bright purple accent creates a dramatic, high-contrast look. | End-game sets, mysterious or magical builds |
| Ward + Gold on Netherite | Gold provides a strong warm contrast against Netherite’s dark base, while Ward suits an Ancient City-inspired theme. | Underground bases, ancient or royal themes |
| Rib + Quartz on Netherite | Quartz gives a pale accent to a dark Netherite set, and the Nether Fortress pattern fits Nether-themed equipment. | Nether explorers and fortress builds |
| Snout + Gold on Netherite | Gold matches the visual language of Bastion Remnants and stands out clearly on dark armor. | Piglin-themed builds and Nether survival gear |
| Eye + Emerald on Diamond | Emerald gives diamond armor a green accent and supports a treasure-hunter or villager-trading theme. | Strongholds, trading halls, exploration |
| Coast + Copper on Diamond | Copper creates a warm, earthy accent without replacing the diamond armor’s blue base. | Ocean bases, docks, coastal explorers |
| Tide + Lapis Lazuli on Diamond | The blue material keeps the set cohesive while making the pattern feel appropriate for ocean equipment. | Ocean Monuments and underwater bases |
| Spire + Amethyst on Diamond | Purple and diamond blue produce a distinctly End-themed palette. | End Cities, elytra users, End builds |
| Vex + Redstone on Iron | Redstone gives a basic iron set a vivid accent, and the unusual pattern makes it less ordinary. | Early or mid-game players who want visible color |
| Dune + Gold on Sand-colored Leather | A warm base, gold decoration, and desert pattern create a consistent desert palette. | Desert temples, mesas, desert settlements |
| Wild + Emerald on Green-dyed Leather | The green-on-green palette is subtle and fits jungle or nature builds. | Jungle temples, rangers, woodland builds |
| Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper, or Host + Copper on Iron | Copper adds a noticeable accent to affordable iron armor and gives the newer Trail Ruins patterns a weathered, archaeological feel. | Trail explorers and archaeology-themed characters |
Best high-contrast combinations
For maximum visibility, use a dark armor base with a light or saturated trim. Netherite with gold, quartz, emerald, amethyst, or redstone is usually easier to read than a dark material on a dark base. Diamond armor also gives good contrast with gold, copper, redstone, or amethyst.
High contrast is useful when you want the pattern to be obvious from a distance. It can be less suitable if you prefer a restrained set where the decoration is only visible up close.
Best matching combinations
A matching combination uses nearby colors instead of forcing the trim to stand out. Diamond with lapis lazuli, Netherite with quartz, and green-dyed leather with emerald are examples of coordinated palettes. Matching colors work well for uniforms, faction armor, and builds where the armor should support rather than dominate the character’s appearance.
Best Netherite combinations
Netherite is the easiest armor base to pair with bright materials because its dark appearance makes most trim colors visible. Gold and quartz are strong choices for classic contrast. Redstone and amethyst create more saturated, distinctive sets, while Netherite-on-Netherite produces a much subtler result.
Rank #2
Do not confuse a Netherite trim with a Netherite upgrade. Applying Netherite as the trim material only adds a Netherite-colored decoration. Upgrading diamond armor requires the separate Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template process.
All vanilla armor trim patterns and where to find them
The vanilla game has 18 Armor Trim Smithing Templates. Most are found in structure chests, but Trail Ruins and Ocean Monuments use different acquisition methods.
| Pattern | Source |
|---|---|
| Sentry | Pillager Outpost |
| Dune | Desert Pyramid |
| Coast | Shipwreck |
| Wild | Jungle Temple |
| Tide | Ocean Monument; it can also sometimes be dropped by an Elder Guardian |
| Ward | Ancient City |
| Silence | Ancient City |
| Vex | Woodland Mansion |
| Rib | Nether Fortress |
| Snout | Bastion Remnant |
| Eye | Stronghold |
| Spire | End City |
| Wayfinder | Trail Ruins; brush Suspicious Gravel |
| Raiser | Trail Ruins; brush Suspicious Gravel |
| Shaper | Trail Ruins; brush Suspicious Gravel |
| Host | Trail Ruins; brush Suspicious Gravel |
Trail Ruins have no chests, so searching them for a loot container will not find these four templates. Ocean Monuments also have no chests; for Tide, search the monument and fight Elder Guardians for a chance at a drop.

- Find or craft a Smithing Table.
- Open it by interacting with the table.
- Put an Armor Trim Smithing Template in the template slot.
- Put a Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, or Boots in the armor slot.
- Put Iron, Copper, Gold, Lapis Lazuli, Emerald, Diamond, Netherite, Redstone, Amethyst, or Nether Quartz in the material slot.
- Take the finished armor from the output slot.
There is no separate Apply, Confirm, or Craft button. When the three inputs are valid, the result appears in the output slot. The Smithing Template is consumed when the trim is applied, so do not use your only copy if you plan to trim several pieces.
Armor trims work only on helmets, chestplates, leggings, and boots. They are not applied to weapons, tools, shields, or other equipment through the vanilla trim recipe.

How to duplicate an armor trim template
To preserve a template while producing another copy, use a Crafting Table. The recipe requires:
- 1 existing Smithing Template
- 7 Diamonds
- 1 block associated with that template
The result is two copies of the same template. Your original is retained and one duplicate is produced. This operation happens in a Crafting Table, not a Smithing Table.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe associated block depends on the pattern. For example, a Nether Fortress-related template uses Netherrack, while an Ancient City-related template uses Cobbled Deepslate. Check the recipe shown in your recipe book or crafting interface before spending the diamonds, particularly for templates obtained from newer structures.
How to identify a trimmed armor piece
The inventory icon is not a reliable way to tell which pattern an armor item has. The official notes state that trim patterns appear visually the same on the armor item icon. Hover over the piece in your inventory and read its tooltip for the trim information.
This matters when testing several combinations. If you have multiple similar helmets or chestplates, label them in an anvil or inspect each tooltip before putting one into the Smithing Table.

Choosing the right combination for your set
- Pick the armor base first. Decide whether the set should look dark and end-game with Netherite, bright and crystalline with diamond, practical with iron, or highly customizable with dyed leather.
- Choose a pattern that matches the theme. Use Rib or Snout for Nether gear, Tide for ocean equipment, Spire for End equipment, or the Trail Ruins patterns for exploration and archaeology.
- Choose contrast deliberately. Gold, quartz, redstone, emerald, and amethyst are easier to notice on dark armor. Similar colors create a quieter design.
- Test one piece before committing. Because the template is consumed, duplicate a rare template first if you want to compare several materials.
- Keep the set consistent—or do not. Four matching pieces look like a uniform. Mixing patterns while keeping one trim material can identify different armor roles without making the colors chaotic.
Java custom trims and data packs
Java Edition supports server-defined trim_pattern and trim_material registries, so data packs can add custom patterns and materials. A matching resource pack is needed for clients to render custom trim textures correctly.

In Java snapshot 25w04a, the provides_trim_material item component was introduced. For built-in smithing recipes, a custom item also needs to be included in the #trim_material tag. The smithing_trim recipe fields base, template, and addition became mandatory, with a pattern field specifying the trim pattern. These are data-pack implementation details; they do not add extra controls to the player-facing Smithing Table.
FAQ
What is the best armor trim combination in Minecraft?
There is no universally best combination because armor trims are cosmetic only. Netherite with gold, quartz, amethyst, or redstone is popular for strong contrast, while matching materials such as diamond with lapis lazuli create a subtler look.
Do armor trims make armor stronger?
No. Trims do not increase armor points, toughness, durability, enchantments, protection, knockback resistance, or any other vanilla gameplay stat.
Can any trim material be used with any armor?
Yes, valid vanilla trim materials can be combined with valid armor pieces and patterns. The armor base and trim material remain separate choices.
Best Value
Does a Netherite trim turn diamond armor into Netherite armor?
No. Netherite in the material slot only adds a Netherite-colored trim. A Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is required for the separate diamond-to-Netherite upgrade.
How many armor trim patterns are there?
The vanilla list contains 18 patterns, including Ward, Silence, and the four Trail Ruins patterns: Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper, and Host.
Are all armor trim templates found in chests?
No. Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper, and Host come from brushing Suspicious Gravel in Trail Ruins. Tide comes from Ocean Monument exploration and can sometimes be dropped by an Elder Guardian; Ocean Monuments have no chests.
Is there an Apply button in the Smithing Table?
No. Place the template, armor, and material in the three input slots. The result appears in the output slot automatically when the combination is valid.

Yes. In a Crafting Table, combine one existing template, seven Diamonds, and one block associated with that template. The recipe returns two copies of the template.
The Bottom Line
Choose the pattern for its theme and the material for its color. For a bold set, start with Netherite and gold, quartz, amethyst, or redstone; for a coordinated set, match the trim color to the armor or build palette. None of these combinations improves combat performance, so the best trim is the one that makes your armor recognizable and suits the way you play.
