When Windows 11 shows Bluetooth headphones as Connected but no sound comes through them, the connection itself may not be the problem. Windows may still be sending audio to your speakers, monitor, or another Bluetooth device. The headphones may also be muted in the Volume mixer, disabled as a playback device, affected by audio enhancements, or using an incompatible driver or Bluetooth audio format.

Work through the checks below in order. Start with the output-device and Volume mixer checks because they resolve most cases without changing drivers or pairing settings.

1. Select the Bluetooth headphones as the output device

A Bluetooth device can be connected for calls or other functions without being selected for audio playback. Choose it explicitly as the Windows output device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select your Bluetooth headphones.
  3. Increase the volume slider and make sure the mute control is not enabled.

You can also select the taskbar Sound icon, open the list of available output devices, and choose the headphones there. Test with a Windows sound or a video after selecting them.

2. Check the app in Windows 11 Volume mixer

If notification sounds or other system audio work but a browser, game, media player, or communications app is silent, the app may have its own volume or output-device setting.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
  2. Under Apps, find the affected application.
  3. Make sure its volume is raised and it is not muted.
  4. Set its Output device to the Bluetooth headphones.

There is also a quicker route: right-click the taskbar volume icon and select Open Volume mixer. Close and reopen the affected app after changing its output device. Some applications retain the device that was selected when they started.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Confirm that the headphones are enabled

A playback device can appear in Windows while being disabled in the classic sound control panel.

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Scroll to Advanced and select More sound settings.
  3. Open the Playback tab.
  4. Select the Bluetooth headphones and choose Properties.
  5. Next to Device usage, select Use this device (enable).
  6. Select Apply, then OK.

In the same Playback window, you can right-click the headphones and select Set as Default Device. Windows 11 still includes this older dialog, although More sound settings is the current Settings path.

4. Turn off audio enhancements

Equalizers, spatial effects, and other enhancements can interfere with a Bluetooth device’s audio stream. They are useful in some configurations but are also a documented cause of missing, distorted, or unusually quiet audio.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the Bluetooth headphones.
  3. Open Audio enhancements.
  4. Set it to Off and test the headphones.

If the modern page does not show that option, use the legacy dialog: right-click the taskbar volume icon, select Sounds, open Playback, select the headphones, and choose Properties. On the Enhancements tab, select Disable all enhancements. If there is no Enhancements tab, check the Advanced tab for audio effects.

5. Run Windows 11’s audio troubleshooter

Microsoft’s current automated audio troubleshooting experience runs through the Get Help app. Open Start, search for Get Help, and run the audio troubleshooter. Follow its prompts while the headphones are connected.

You can also use the Settings troubleshooter:

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Audio.
  3. Select Run.

Do not follow older Windows 10 instructions that use Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. That is not the current Windows 11 path.

6. Restart Windows audio services

Restarting the audio services can restore playback when Windows system audio or one particular application has stopped communicating correctly with the output device.

  1. Press Start, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Audio.
  3. Right-click it and select Restart.
  4. Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  5. Right-click it and select Restart.

Test the headphones again. If the affected application was already open, close and relaunch it so it rebuilds its audio connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Change the Bluetooth audio format

An unsupported or problematic format can result in silence, crackling, or unreliable playback. Try another format rather than assuming one setting works for every headset.

For the standard Windows 11 output controls:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Select the Bluetooth headphones under Output.
  3. Open Advanced.
  4. Under Default format, select a different format.
  5. Test playback after each change.

Microsoft also provides a Bluetooth-specific format control:

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  2. Select the connected headphones.
  3. Choose Advanced sound properties.
  4. Under Output settings, set Format to 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000Hz (DVD Quality).

The headphones must be connected before Advanced sound properties appears. The 48 kHz setting is a troubleshooting option for Bluetooth devices, not a universal fix for every headset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Find the headphones.
  3. Select More options (…) next to them and choose Remove device.
  4. Put the headphones into pairing mode.
  5. Select Add device > Bluetooth.
  6. Choose the headphones from the list.

For a simpler reset, turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on:

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Bluetooth

Then reconnect the headphones and select them again under System > Sound > Output.

9. Update the Bluetooth and audio drivers

An incompatible Bluetooth driver can become a problem after a Windows update or upgrade. Update the relevant adapter before assuming the headphones have failed.

Update the Bluetooth driver

  1. Open Start > Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter. Its name may include radio.
  4. Select Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.
  5. Follow the prompts and restart the PC if Windows requests it.

Update the audio driver

  1. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Right-click the relevant audio device.
  3. Select Update driver.
  4. Restart Windows.

If the issue began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, check the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if available. If updating does not help, uninstalling the audio driver and installing the latest driver from your PC or sound-card manufacturer may be necessary. Prefer the manufacturer’s support page over random driver-download sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Fix headphones missing from the Output list

If the headphones do not appear under Output, or Windows displays No audio output device is installed, the problem is more likely a missing, disabled, or incorrectly loaded driver than a volume setting.

  1. Open Start > Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. If the audio device is present, right-click it and choose Enable device if that option is available.
  4. Select View > Show hidden devices.
  5. Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.

For Bluetooth headphones, also check the Bluetooth section for warning icons. A yellow warning symbol on the adapter points to a driver or hardware problem.

11. Check physical and USB causes

For wired, USB, or hybrid headphones, eliminate simple connection problems before changing Windows settings:

  • Push a 3.5 mm plug fully into the headphone jack.
  • On a computer with separate jacks, use the jack marked for headphones or the green audio output jack—not the pink microphone input.
  • Try another USB port, preferably a port directly on the PC rather than an unpowered hub.
  • Check the headset’s own volume wheel, buttons, or mute switch.
  • Unplug the headphones and test the PC speakers. This helps determine whether the issue is limited to the headset output.
  • Test the headphones with another phone or computer. If they are silent there too, charge them or investigate the headset itself.

12. Fix sound loss when using the headset microphone

Some Bluetooth headsets behave differently when an application activates the microphone. On supported Windows 11 24H2 systems, Bluetooth LE Audio can provide stereo playback while the microphone is active, but the PC, drivers, and headset must all support that feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If sound stops or becomes unreliable as soon as a game or calling app uses the microphone:

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the arrow next to the Bluetooth LE Audio device.
  3. Expand Output settings > Format.
  4. Under Format when microphone is active, choose Mono (1 channel) for maximum compatibility.

Choose Stereo (2 channels) only when the option is available and the PC, drivers, and headset support it. If the control is missing, the system does not support stereo playback while the microphone is active.

Also check Settings > Accessibility > Audio and disable system-wide mono audio if you need stereo playback.

13. Check Bluetooth audio compatibility

“Connected” does not guarantee that Windows has a compatible high-quality audio profile available. Check the headphone manufacturer’s specifications to confirm that the device supports A2DP audio streaming. Compatibility limitations, outdated drivers, or a headset designed mainly for calls can prevent normal media playback.

Will setting Bluetooth audio to 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000Hz always fix the problem?

Why does audio stop when I turn on my Bluetooth headset microphone?

The PC or headset may not support stereo playback while the microphone is active. In Settings > System > Sound, open the Bluetooth LE Audio device and set Format when microphone is active to Mono for compatibility. Stereo is available only on supported Windows 11 24H2 systems with compatible hardware, drivers, and headphones.

What should I do if the Bluetooth headphones do not appear as an output device?

Open Device Manager and check Sound, video and game controllers and Bluetooth. Enable a disabled device, select View > Show hidden devices, and use Action > Scan for hardware changes. Then install the latest audio or Bluetooth driver from the computer manufacturer if necessary.

The Bottom Line

Most Windows 11 Bluetooth headphone audio failures are fixed by selecting the headphones under Settings > System > Sound > Output, correcting the affected app in Volume mixer, or pairing the device again. If those checks fail, turn off enhancements, try another format, restart the Windows audio services, and update the Bluetooth and audio drivers. A microphone-related failure may require changing the Bluetooth LE Audio microphone-active format to Mono.
