You cannot install Google Indic Keyboard as a native Windows program. The app listed as Google Indic Keyboard on Google Play is an Android keyboard application for phones, and Google does not currently provide an official Windows installer or .exe version.
For a Windows PC, the correct replacement is Microsoft’s built-in Indic Phonetic keyboard. It lets you type words with English letters and select suggestions in an Indian script—for example, typing namaste can produce नमस्ते—without downloading a separate IME.
What you should install instead
Google’s current Input Tools pages provide a Chrome extension for web use and an Android version through Google Play. They do not provide a current Google Indic Keyboard Windows application.

The Windows keyboard is not identical to the Android Google Indic Keyboard, but it provides the same basic phonetic workflow: type the pronunciation using a standard English keyboard, then choose the suggested word written in the selected Indic script.
Install an Indic keyboard in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Time & language > Language & region.
- Find the Indic language you want to use. Select the … button beside it and choose Language options.
- Under Language features, find Basic typing.
- Select Download. Windows downloads the keyboard dictionary and related typing features through Windows Update.
If the language is not listed, add it first:
- Go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- In Choose a language to install, enter the language name in Type a language name.
- Select the language and choose Next.
- Review the language features and select Install.
After the language is installed, return to its Language options page and confirm that Basic typing has finished downloading.
Install an Indic keyboard in Windows 10
- Select Start > Settings.
- Open Time & language > Language.
- Under Preferred languages, select the Indic language.
- Select Options.
- Under Language options: <language>, select Download under Basic typing.
If Basic typing is not shown, Windows considers it already installed.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The keyboard may continue to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical support, or security fixes for that operating system. Where possible, use Windows 11.
Add a particular keyboard layout
Installing a language and installing a keyboard layout are related but separate steps. To add a specific layout in Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Select the … button beside the relevant language.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the layout you want from the list.
If the required layout does not appear, install the language associated with that layout first. Then return to Language options > Add a keyboard and check again.

Switch between English and the Indic keyboard
Once two or more layouts are installed, use either method:
- Select the input-language icon in the taskbar system tray, then select the required keyboard.
- Hold the Windows key and press Spacebar. Continue pressing Spacebar to cycle through the installed layouts.
If Windows + Spacebar does nothing, only one keyboard layout is probably installed. Add another layout and try again.
Use phonetic typing
Open Notepad, Word, a browser text box, or another application that accepts text. Switch to the Indic Phonetic keyboard and type the pronunciation using the Latin alphabet. Windows displays suggestions based on what you enter.
For example, with a Hindi phonetic keyboard selected, enter:
namasteChoose नमस्ते from the suggestions. The exact suggestions and spelling behavior depend on the language, word, application, and installed dictionary.
This is different from an InScript layout. Phonetic typing is pronunciation-based, while InScript uses a fixed arrangement of Indic characters on the physical keyboard. If you already know InScript, add that layout instead of—or in addition to—the phonetic layout.

Fix “<Language> IME is not ready yet”
This message normally means that the Indic keyboard dictionary has not finished downloading.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Time & language > Language & region.
- Select the … button beside the affected language.
- Choose Language options.
- Select Download next to Basic typing.
Keep the computer connected to the internet and allow Windows Update to complete the download. Then close and reopen the application in which you were typing.
Fix a missing keyboard or language
The keyboard is not listed under “Add a keyboard”
The language containing that layout may not be installed, or the layout may belong to a different language. Use Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Add a language to install the matching language. Then return to its Language options page and select Add a keyboard.
The taskbar input icon is missing
Windows may be showing the older desktop language bar instead of the taskbar input icon. To restore the modern input indicator:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings.
- Under Switching input methods, clear Use the desktop language bar when it’s available.
The Remove button is disabled for a keyboard
A keyboard layout cannot be removed if it is the only layout installed for that Windows display language. Add another keyboard layout first, then return to the language options page and remove the unwanted one.

What about downloading an APK or EXE?
Do not download websites claiming to offer “Google Indic Keyboard for PC.exe.” Google’s current official pages do not expose such a Windows installer, and the Google Play listing identifies the app as an Android application.
An .apk file is an Android package, not a Windows program. Installing it directly on Windows is not an official installation method for this keyboard. Google Play Games on PC is also not a general Android-app installer; Google documents it as a platform for playing supported mobile games on Windows.
For ordinary Windows typing, the built-in Microsoft keyboard is safer and simpler. If you specifically need the Android app, use it on a compatible Android device through Google Play rather than downloading an unverified APK.
Windows Single Language editions
Windows may display a message such as “Only one language pack allowed” or “Your Windows license supports only one display language.” This restriction applies to Windows display-language packs. It does not automatically mean that you cannot add an additional keyboard layout. Keyboard availability is configured separately under the language and keyboard settings.

Is Google Indic Keyboard available for Windows PC?

Can I install the Google Indic Keyboard APK directly on Windows?
No. An APK is an Android package, and Google does not provide an official Windows installation procedure for this keyboard. Avoid downloading APK or EXE files from unofficial sites.
Why does Windows say that the Indic IME is not ready?
The Basic typing dictionary has probably not finished downloading. Open the language’s Language options page and select Download next to Basic typing, then wait for Windows Update to complete.
How do I switch between English and an Indic keyboard?
Select the input-language icon in the taskbar and choose the keyboard, or press Windows + Spacebar to cycle through installed layouts.

Google provides Input Tools for web use through a Chrome extension. That is separate from Google Indic Keyboard and does not install the Android keyboard as a native Windows IME.
The Bottom Line
There is no current official Google Indic Keyboard download for Windows. Install the relevant Indic Phonetic language feature through Windows Settings instead: Time & language > Language & region > Language options > Basic typing. After it downloads, switch layouts with the taskbar input icon or Windows + Spacebar.
