Google Authenticator does not have an official Windows 11 app. You cannot install the genuine Google Authenticator from the Microsoft Store, run it as a Windows desktop program, or use an official Chrome extension. The supported arrangement is to display the sign-in or enrollment page on your Windows 11 PC while Google Authenticator generates the verification code on an Android phone or iPhone.

After setup, you type the code shown on your phone into the Windows browser or application. The code can be generated without Wi-Fi, mobile data, or cellular service.

What you need

  • A Windows 11 PC with access to the account or service you want to protect.
  • An Android phone running Android 6.0 or later, or an iPhone with Google Authenticator installed.
  • The ability to sign in to the service’s security settings.
  • A camera on the phone for scanning the setup QR code.

Google Authenticator works with Google Accounts and with other websites that support authenticator-app two-step verification. The Windows PC is the device you sign in from; it is not where the official Authenticator app runs.

Set up Google Authenticator for a Google Account

  1. On the Windows 11 PC, open myaccount.google.com and sign in.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Under How you sign in to Google, select 2-Step Verification. Google may ask you to sign in again.
  4. Find the Authenticator option and select Set up authenticator. Depending on the account interface, the button may be labelled Get Started.
  5. Leave the QR code visible in the Windows browser.
  6. On your phone, install or open Google Authenticator and follow its setup instructions.
  7. Use the phone’s camera or the Authenticator setup flow to scan the QR code displayed on the PC.
  8. When Google displays a verification field on the PC, enter the current six-digit code shown in Authenticator and confirm it.

The code changes periodically. If it changes while you are typing it, wait for the next code and enter that one before it expires.

Use the authenticator code when signing in on Windows 11

  1. Open the website or application on the Windows 11 PC.
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. When prompted for a verification method, choose the authenticator-app option if it is not selected automatically.
  4. Open Google Authenticator on your phone.
  5. Find the entry for the correct website and account.
  6. Type the current code into the Windows sign-in page and submit it.

Authenticator codes are not delivered by text message. They are calculated on the phone, so an internet connection is not required after the account has been enrolled.

Use Google Authenticator without synchronizing codes

Google Authenticator can keep codes only on the phone instead of synchronizing them to a Google Account. This is a storage choice, not a Windows installation option.

  • During the first launch: select Use without an account.
  • In an existing installation: tap the profile picture in the top-right corner, then select Use Authenticator without an account.

With this option, the codes are removed from Google Accounts and remain on that device only. If the phone is lost or replaced, they will not automatically appear on the new device.

Synchronize codes across phones

If you sign in to Google Authenticator with a Google Account, synchronized codes can be restored on another device when you sign in with that same account. Google says synchronized codes are encrypted in transit and at rest across its products.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  1. Open Google Authenticator on the phone.
  2. Tap the profile picture or initials.
  3. Select Add another account.
  4. Select an account already on the phone, or sign in to another Google Account.
  5. When asked whether to save codes to that Google Account, tap Allow.

Be careful when deleting a synchronized code: deleting it removes the code from every device where it is synchronized. Removing the Authenticator service from a Google Account deletes the synchronized Authenticator codes, but does not delete the entire Google Account.

Transfer codes to a new phone

If your codes are not synchronized, keep both the old and new phones available. The old phone must have the latest Authenticator version and still contain the accounts.

  1. On the old phone, open Authenticator and select Menu → Transfer accounts → Export accounts.
  2. Select the accounts to move and tap Next.
  3. On the new phone, open Authenticator and select Menu → Transfer accounts → Import accounts.
  4. Tap Scan QR code.
  5. Scan the QR code displayed by the old phone.
  6. Test a code from the new phone before wiping or resetting the old one.

Transferring several accounts can produce more than one QR code. Scan each code shown by the old device.

Also keep recovery codes, a passkey, or another recovery method in a safe place. Authenticator is a second factor; it does not replace the account password or the service’s recovery options.

Fix invalid or rejected codes

Symptom What to check
The code is rejected Enter a newly generated code before it expires. Confirm that you selected the entry for the correct website and account.
The code changes too quickly or never works Check that the phone’s date, time, and time zone are set correctly and that automatic time synchronization is enabled in the phone’s operating-system settings.
The account entry is missing Tap the profile icon and check whether Authenticator is signed in to a different Google Account. If the codes were intended to be local-only, choose Use Authenticator without an account.
Authenticator is not offered during Google sign-in It can take up to seven days for Authenticator to become available as a Google sign-in option. A trusted passkey or security key may reduce that wait.
The phone was lost and codes were synchronized Remove the lost device from the Google Account and review the account’s security settings.
The phone was lost and codes were not synchronized Visit each service protected by Authenticator, remove the old authenticator, and link a new device. Use a service’s backup codes or another recovery method if required.

In Google Authenticator version 7.0, the old in-app Time correction for codes setting is no longer available. The app uses the time supplied by the phone’s operating system, so correct the phone’s date and time instead.

What not to install on Windows 11

Do not download a supposed “official Google Authenticator for Windows” installer from an unrelated download site. Google’s official distribution page lists Android and iOS, not Windows. Likewise, an extension claiming to be the official Google Authenticator Chrome extension is a separate, unofficial product.

If you need codes directly on a computer, you would be choosing a different authenticator product—not installing Google Authenticator. Check the developer, privacy policy, backup model, and whether the service you use supports that product before importing or enrolling accounts.

Can Google Authenticator run inside Windows Subsystem for Android?

That is not the supported Google workflow. Google distributes Authenticator for supported mobile platforms, and its documented Windows-PC process uses a phone to scan the QR code and generate codes. A Windows 11 PC can display the QR code, but the official app should remain on a supported mobile device.

FAQ

Can I use Google Authenticator codes on a Windows PC without my phone having internet?

Yes. Once setup is complete, the app generates codes without internet access or cellular service. You still need access to the phone and its Authenticator entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Google Authenticator work only with Google Accounts?

No. It also generates time-based and counter-based codes for other websites and applications that support authenticator-app two-step verification.

Why did my Google Authenticator codes disappear?

The app may be signed out of the Google Account that stores the codes, or you may be viewing a different Google Account. Check the profile icon, switch accounts, and verify whether the codes were configured for account synchronization or local-only storage.

What happens if I delete a synchronized Authenticator code?

The code is deleted from all devices where it is synchronized. Deleting the Authenticator service from a Google Account removes the synchronized codes but does not delete the whole Google Account.

Can I scan the setup QR code using the Windows webcam?

Google’s documented setup uses Google Authenticator on a phone to scan the QR code displayed on the PC. The official documentation does not provide a Windows-native installation or a Windows desktop workflow for running Google Authenticator itself.

The Bottom Line

Use Windows 11 to open the account’s 2-Step Verification settings and display the enrollment QR code. Use the official Google Authenticator app on an Android phone or iPhone to scan that code and generate the one-time codes. There is no official Google Authenticator program to install on Windows 11, and unofficial Store listings or browser extensions should not be treated as Google products.
