Windows 11 already includes its modern DirectX runtime, but older games may still need separate DirectX 9-era files such as d3dx9_35.dll, XInput 1.3, or XAudio 2.7. Installing DirectX 9 for this purpose means installing Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer—not replacing DirectX 12.
Use Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. Its filename is dxwebsetup.exe. Do not download individual DLL files from unofficial websites.
What the DirectX 9 installer does on Windows 11
Microsoft’s legacy runtime installs optional, side-by-side libraries used by older games and applications. These include:

It does not replace DirectX 12, downgrade Windows 11, or change the DirectX version shown by the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Windows keeps these older components alongside its current DirectX runtime so that legacy software can use the files it was built for.

Install DirectX 9 on Windows 11
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer download page.
- Select Download. The downloaded file should be named
dxwebsetup.exe. - Open the file from your Downloads folder. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
- Accept the licence agreement.
- Clear any optional software offer if you do not want it, then continue through the wizard.
- Allow the installer to download and install the legacy DirectX files. An internet connection is required because this is a web installer.
- Select Finish when the installation completes.
- Restart Windows before launching the affected game again.
The Microsoft download page lists package version 9.29.1974.1, published July 15, 2024. The package is intended for legacy DirectX components; it is not a separate DirectX 12 setup program.
Verify DirectX after installation
Use dxdiag to check the DirectX version that Windows reports:
- Press the Windows key and type
dxdiag. - Select dxdiag from the search results.
- If Windows asks whether to verify that drivers are digitally signed, select Yes.
- On the System tab, find DirectX Version under System Information.
Windows 11 will normally continue to report DirectX 12. That is expected. The legacy runtime does not change this field because it adds older side-by-side files rather than upgrading or replacing the Windows DirectX runtime.

Update Windows 11 before troubleshooting a game
DirectX 12 is included with Windows 11 and is serviced through Windows Update. If the game uses the modern Windows runtime, install the latest available Windows updates rather than searching for a separate DirectX 12 installer.
- Open Start.
- Go to Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the PC if Windows requests it.
This Windows update process and the DirectX End-User Runtime are different operations: Windows Update maintains the operating-system DirectX components, while dxwebsetup.exe supplies older optional libraries for compatible applications.

Fix common DirectX 9 installation problems
“The program can’t start because d3dx9_35.dll is missing”
This message usually means that a legacy DirectX 9 SDK library is missing. It does not mean that DirectX 12 is absent. Install the official End-User Runtime, restart Windows, and try the game again.

The number in the filename matters. DirectX 12 does not automatically include every older D3DX9 file, so a computer can correctly report DirectX 12 and still lack d3dx9_35.dll or another legacy component.

The installer says no update is required
The web installer may find that the legacy files are already present. Close it, restart Windows, and start the game again. If the error remains, verify the exact DLL named in the message and use the game’s own repair or file-verification option.
DirectX still says version 12 after installation
That is normal. The End-User Runtime is not designed to change the value shown by dxdiag. A successful installation can add legacy files while dxdiag continues to show DirectX 12.
The game still will not launch
A DirectX 9 runtime installation is not a guarantee that an old game will run on Windows 11. Also check the game’s graphics driver requirement, hardware compatibility, installation files, launcher dependencies, and compatibility settings. If the game came from Steam or another launcher, run its file-repair or file-verification command.
Do not copy a single DLL from a random download site into C:WindowsSystem32 or the game folder. That can install the wrong file, create architecture mismatches, or expose the system to malware. Install the complete Microsoft package instead.

DirectX 9 installation: what not to do
- Do not try to uninstall DirectX 12 before installing DirectX 9.
- Do not use a “DirectX 12 download” to solve a missing
d3dx9_*.dllerror. - Do not expect
dxdiagto change from DirectX 12 to DirectX 9. - Do not install an unofficial repackaged runtime or individual DLL.
- Do not assume that a current DirectX version proves that the graphics driver or GPU supports every game feature.
FAQ
Can DirectX 9 be installed on Windows 11?
Yes. Install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, dxwebsetup.exe, to add legacy DirectX 9-era libraries used by older games. It installs alongside the Windows runtime.
Will installing DirectX 9 remove DirectX 12?
No. The legacy runtime does not replace, downgrade, or uninstall DirectX 12. Windows 11 continues to use its built-in DirectX runtime.
Why does dxdiag still show DirectX 12 after I install DirectX 9?
That is expected. dxdiag reports the Windows DirectX version. The End-User Runtime adds side-by-side legacy files and is not intended to change that version.
Is dxwebsetup.exe the official DirectX 9 installer?
It is Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer for legacy components. Download it from Microsoft’s download page, not from a third-party DLL or driver website.

Does DirectX 12 include d3dx9_35.dll?
Not necessarily. DirectX 12 does not automatically provide every older D3DX9 library. A game that names d3dx9_35.dll or a similar file generally needs the legacy End-User Runtime.
Do I need to install DirectX 9 if a new game uses DirectX 12?
Usually not. For a modern game, first install Windows updates and current graphics drivers. Install the legacy runtime only when the game or its installer specifically requires an older DirectX component.
