When an app does not send a two-factor authentication (2FA) code, first identify which kind of verification is failing. SMS, email, authenticator-app codes, and push approvals use different systems, so restarting the phone will not fix every case.
Use the section that matches what the sign-in screen is asking for. Before trying anything else, request only one new code and wait for it. Repeated requests can trigger temporary blocks, and services such as Google invalidate older codes when a newer one is issued.
How To FIX Apps Not Sending Verification Codes (2FA)!
First: identify the verification method
| What is missing? | What normally causes the problem? |

An authenticator app generates a time-based code locally. It does not need Wi-Fi, mobile data, or cellular service. SMS messages and push approvals do need the relevant phone, carrier, or internet connection.
Do not keep requesting new codes
Repeatedly tapping Resend code can make the situation harder to diagnose.

- On Google, only the newest requested code works. Earlier codes become invalid when another code is issued.
- Google can limit recovery-code requests. If its daily limit is reached, you may need to wait 24 hours.
- Microsoft can temporarily block further requests when alternative email addresses or phone numbers are used repeatedly.
Request one code, wait, and check all relevant folders or devices. If another code arrives, enter the newest one rather than an earlier message.
Check whether the service used another method
The option displayed on the sign-in screen is not always the method that actually receives the approval.
Google may send a Google prompt to an Android phone already signed in to the same Google Account instead of sending an SMS. Select Resend on the sign-in screen, then check the following:

- Confirm the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb.
- Install the latest Google Play services updates.
- On Android, open Settings > Passwords & accounts > Google and confirm the account is signed in.
Google may also withhold an SMS when the sign-in looks unusual, such as a sign-in from a different location. Use another offered method or a trusted device if one is available. See Google’s prompt troubleshooting steps.
Apple
Apple may show the six-digit code on an existing trusted Apple device. A trusted phone number does not automatically receive a message every time. On the new device, select Didn’t get a verification code?, then choose the trusted phone number.
Microsoft
On a Microsoft sign-in screen, choose Other ways to sign in. If available, select Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app rather than waiting for an SMS or email.

Check the number and mobile service
Start with the details shown on the sign-in screen:

- Confirm the phone has cellular service and can receive ordinary text messages.
- Check that the mobile plan supports SMS.
- Delete old messages if the phone’s message storage is full.
- Confirm the messaging app is working normally.
- Check whether the service accepts your number type. Some services reject VoIP numbers; Microsoft does not allow VoIP numbers for sign-in verification.
Carrier congestion and local delivery problems can delay automated messages. Do not assume that a missing text means the account has sent nothing.

Ask the carrier about short-code blocking
Verification texts often come from short codes or automated messaging systems. Contact the carrier and specifically ask it to check:
- Short-code blocking
- Premium or commercial SMS blocking
- Spam-filtering restrictions
- Whether a recently ported number is still being provisioned
- SIM or eSIM provisioning
- Whether automated authentication messages are being rejected
Number porting can temporarily interfere with recovery messages. Google also identifies blocked short codes and carrier problems as causes of missing verification texts.
Inspect filtered messages
The code may have arrived but been moved out of the main conversation list.
iPhone with iOS 26:
- Open Messages.
- Tap Filters.
- Open Unknown Senders.
- Review the verification message.
- If it is legitimate, tap Mark as Known.
To change the setting, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders. You can turn off Screen Unknown Senders or enable the relevant notification options. Also check Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering > Text Message Filter.
Google Messages on Android: open Google Messages and check Spam & blocked. Reporting a message as spam also blocks its sender, so unblock a legitimate verification sender before requesting one more code.
Fix verification emails that are missing
Search every possible location, including:
- Inbox
- Spam or Junk
- Promotions or Bulk Mail
- Quarantine
- Rules and filters
- Another mailbox or recovery address
Gmail
- Open Gmail on a computer.
- Click Settings > See all settings.
- Open Filters and Blocked Addresses.
- Remove the expected sender from the blocked list if necessary.
- Review filters that delete, archive, forward, or label incoming messages.
- Edit or delete a rule that is diverting the code.
A blocked Gmail sender is sent to Spam. For Google account-verification email, legitimate messages may come from account-verification-noreply@google.com or noreply@google.com. Add the appropriate address to your contacts or mail provider’s allowlist, then request one new message.
Outlook
In new Outlook for Windows, open Settings > Mail > Junk email. Review Blocked senders and domains, add the legitimate sender or domain to Safe Senders, and select Save. Microsoft says valid account-verification messages come from an @accountprotection.microsoft.com address.

When the code is sent to another Microsoft mailbox
If you use one Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or MSN address to receive a code for another Microsoft account, signing into both accounts in the same browser can sign you out of the first one. Use two private windows:
- Open the first account’s sign-in page in a private window and leave it at the code-entry screen.
- Open a second private window and sign in to the alternate mailbox.
- Copy the code.
- Return to the first window and enter it.
In Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl + Shift + P to open an InPrivate window.
Fix authenticator-app codes that are rejected
If an authenticator code is rejected, the issue is usually synchronization or enrollment—not delivery.

Set the phone’s clock automatically
- Enable automatic date and time.
- Enable automatic time zone if the phone provides that option.
- Restart the phone.
- Enter the code from the correct account entry in the authenticator app.
Microsoft Authenticator requires an accurate device clock. A manually configured clock can produce expired or rejected codes.
Google Authenticator version 7.0 no longer has the old in-app Time correction setting. It now uses the operating system’s time, so correct the phone’s date, time, and time zone instead.
Check whether the entry is still valid
An old authenticator entry stops working if the service account was re-enrolled, restored, or moved to another authenticator. Use the newly configured entry if the account was recently set up again.
Do not delete the entry yet. Before removing or reinstalling the authenticator app, make sure you have a backup code, an existing signed-in device, or access to the account’s security page to enroll a replacement. Deleting the only copy of a secret can make recovery more difficult.
Fix missing push-approval notifications
Push approvals require both internet access and permission to display notifications.

Microsoft Authenticator checklist
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Turn off Airplane mode.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator.
- In Authenticator, open Settings and confirm App updates is enabled.
- Open Settings > Notification Settings in Authenticator and enable Show notifications.
- Turn off battery optimization for Authenticator.
- Check the phone’s date and time.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb or Quiet mode.
Microsoft does not support Authenticator versions more than 12 months old. On Android work or school accounts, push notifications also require Google Play Services and Google Play Store to be installed and enabled.
On Android, the usual notification path is Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Authenticator. Turn notifications on and check each notification category. A category set to Silent may appear only in the notification shade without sound or vibration.
Check for an old or secondary device
After changing phones, a prompt may still be going to the previous phone, a tablet, or a separate work profile. Check:

- Work and personal Android profiles
- A restored backup that did not restore account credentials
- Devices that remain registered to the account
Microsoft says an Authenticator request may go to the device where the app was last used. Approve it on that device if it is yours, or remove obsolete devices from the account and choose another verification method.
Use another verification method
Do not wait indefinitely for a broken delivery method. On the sign-in screen, select Try another way, Other ways to sign in, or a similarly named option. Depending on the account, alternatives can include:
- A Google prompt
- A trusted Apple device
- A backup phone number
- A recovery email
- An authenticator app
- A passkey
- A hardware security key
- A backup code
- Account recovery
- Administrator-assisted recovery for a work or school account
Use Google backup codes
Google backup codes are eight digits and each code works once. Generating a new set invalidates the previous set.
- Open your Google Account.
- Select Security & sign-in > 2-Step Verification.
- Under Backup codes, select Continue.
- Select Get backup codes, Refresh, Download Codes, or Print.
- During sign-in, select Try another way > Enter one of your 8-digit backup codes.
Use the account’s recovery process
Use Google Account recovery from a familiar device, your usual browser, and a familiar location. Enter the most recent password you remember. Some two-step-verification recovery cases take three to five business days. For work or school Google accounts, contact the administrator if all backup methods fail.
Apple
- Attempt to sign in to the Apple Account.
- Select Didn’t Get a Code? or Can’t get to your devices?
- Select Can’t use [phone number].
- Follow the account-recovery instructions.
Apple account recovery can take several days or longer, and contacting Apple does not speed it up. Once access is restored, add another trusted number through Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Two-Factor Authentication > Add a Trusted Phone Number.

Microsoft
Open the Microsoft Security basics page, select Update info, and choose a working verification method. If none is available, select I don’t have any of these to replace the security information.
Do not remove every Microsoft security method at once. Changing all security information simultaneously can restrict the account for 30 days. Microsoft support agents cannot send verification codes or bypass the account-security checks.
Security warnings
- Never give a verification code to another person, including someone claiming to be support.
- Google says it will not call you to request a verification code.
- Enter Google passwords and codes only on
accounts.google.com. Google does not request them by email, phone, or message. - An unexpected code can mean someone is attempting to sign in, although it can also result from a wrong phone number or a delayed message. Do not use or share an unsolicited code.
- A Google Voice number can be a poor recovery destination because signing out of Google Voice may leave you unable to access the number needed for the code.

FAQ
Why am I not receiving my 2FA verification code?
The code may be delayed, filtered, sent to another email address or device, or blocked by the carrier. First identify whether the service is using SMS, email, an authenticator app, or a push approval, then troubleshoot that method.
Does an authenticator app need internet access?
No. Time-based authenticator codes are generated locally and normally work without Wi-Fi or mobile data. If the code is rejected, check the phone’s automatic date, time, and time-zone settings.
Why does requesting another verification code make things worse?
Some services invalidate earlier codes when a new one is requested. Repeated requests can also trigger daily limits or temporary blocks. Request one code and use the newest one only.
Where are missing verification texts on an iPhone?
On iOS 26, open Messages, tap Filters, and check Unknown Senders. Also review Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders and the Text Message Filter settings.
What should I do if Microsoft Authenticator sends the prompt to my old phone?
Check the old phone, tablet, or work profile where Authenticator may still be active. Remove obsolete devices from the Microsoft account, then choose another sign-in method if the old device is unavailable.
