Roblox may fail before the game window appears, remain stuck in an installation loop, show “cannot find Roblox,” or crash while joining an experience. The cause is usually a damaged local installation, browser data, security software, a missing Windows component, or another program interfering with the Roblox client.
Work through the fixes below in order. After each major change, restart Roblox and try joining the same experience again.
1. Close Roblox completely and restart Windows
A Roblox process left running during an update or installation can prevent the launcher from replacing its files.
- Close Roblox, Roblox Studio, your browser, and the Roblox installer.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, select any Roblox, Roblox Game Client, or Roblox Studio process and click End task.
- Restart Windows.
- Try Roblox again before opening other applications.
If Roblox still will not launch, continue with the installation checks below.

2. Make sure you have the current Microsoft Store app
Windows currently has two Roblox apps with similar names:

Open the Microsoft Store, search for Roblox – Windows, and install or update that app. You need a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, and Microsoft may ask you to link your Xbox account to your Roblox account once.
Your progress, friends, Robux, and inventory remain connected to your Roblox account, not the Windows app. You may need to sign in again after installation. Once the new app works, uninstall the old light-gray Roblox app so Windows does not keep launching the wrong version.
3. Reinstall Roblox the normal way
A normal reinstall can replace missing or damaged files. Roblox recommends trying a reinstall over the existing installation first. If that does not help, uninstall it completely, restart Windows, and install it again.
Uninstall Roblox in Windows 10 or 11
- Open taskbar Search and type Control Panel.
- Open Control Panel and select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click Roblox.
- Select Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
- Complete the prompts, then restart Windows.
After restarting, install Roblox from roblox.com or the official Microsoft Store app. Close other programs while the installer runs.
4. Delete Roblox’s local files before reinstalling
If the same broken cache or executable survives a reinstall, remove Roblox’s local data. This is particularly useful for an endless install loop or a “cannot find Roblox” error.
Command Prompt method
- Uninstall Roblox first.
- Press Win+R, type
CMD, and press Enter. - Run these commands exactly:
cd AppDataLocal
rmdir /s RobloxWhen Command Prompt asks for confirmation, type y and press Enter. Restart Windows, then reinstall Roblox.

Manual method
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Delete the Roblox folder.
- Restart Windows and reinstall Roblox.
If you do not want to delete the entire folder initially, open it and remove the Cache folder at %localappdata%RobloxCache. Delete the complete Roblox folder if clearing the cache does not resolve the launch failure.

When you click Play on roblox.com, the browser hands the game off to the desktop client. Corrupt cookies, temporary internet files, extensions, VPNs, or blocked pop-ups can break that handoff.
- Clear cached files and cookies in the browser you use to start Roblox.
- Repeat the cleanup in every browser you use for Roblox; the setting is not shared between browsers.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and download/security extensions.
- Disconnect a VPN temporarily and test again.
- Try another supported browser to determine whether the problem is browser-specific.
Internet Explorer is not supported for launching Roblox. If the Microsoft Store version works but the website version does not, the issue is probably the browser handoff rather than the game installation.
6. Repair Windows system files
A “Failed to load library” message can result from missing or corrupted Windows DLL files, including MFPlat.dll and urlmon.dll. Repair the Windows component store first, then run System File Checker.
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannowRestart Windows after both scans complete and test Roblox again. Do not close the window while either scan is running.

7. Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N or KN
Windows N and KN editions omit media components that some applications require. Roblox specifically identifies the missing Media Feature Pack as a possible cause of missing MFPlat.dll errors.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and click Install.
- Restart Windows.
To check your edition, go to Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications.

8. Update Windows and the graphics driver
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Install every available update and restart if prompted.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics card and select Update driver.
If Windows says the driver is current but Roblox started failing after a graphics-driver update, download the correct driver directly from the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel website and follow that vendor’s rollback or clean-install options.
9. Check firewall and antivirus blocking
Security software can block Roblox network traffic or quarantine a file immediately after installation. First, inspect your antivirus quarantine and blocked-file logs for Roblox entries.

Roblox’s documented installation folder is:
C:Users<Your Windows Username>AppDataLocalRobloxReplace the placeholder with your Windows account name. Add that folder to your antivirus exclusion list only if you trust the installation and obtained Roblox from the official website or Microsoft Store.
For a short diagnostic test, temporarily disable the firewall, launch Roblox, and then re-enable the firewall immediately afterward. If Roblox works only while the firewall is disabled, add Roblox to the firewall’s allowed-program list rather than leaving protection off:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security.
- Open the firewall’s area for allowing programs through the firewall.
- Allow Roblox on the required network types.
Roblox does not use one permanent outgoing port. Its client selects ports dynamically for experience sessions, and blocked UDP traffic can cause connection failures. Avoid treating a single port-forwarding rule as a universal Roblox fix; check the firewall, router security, VPN, and network filtering instead.
10. Remove software that interferes with Roblox
Unofficial Roblox clients, modified launchers, injectors, overlays, process-suspension tools, and software that changes Roblox in the background can cause crashes or anti-cheat failures. Uninstall unofficial Roblox versions and reinstall from roblox.com or an official app store.

Use a clean boot to find a conflict
- Press Win+R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
- Disable all enabled startup items.
- Close Task Manager and System Configuration, then restart Windows.
Test Roblox. If it works, re-enable services and startup items in small groups until the conflicting program is identified. Restore normal startup behavior afterward rather than leaving every service disabled.
You can also test in Windows Safe Mode. If Roblox works there, a background application is the likely cause.
11. Fix the Windows debug-mode error
If Roblox says, “Critical system files are corrupt. Roblox cannot run. Please repair or reset your Windows installation,” check whether Windows debug mode is enabled:
- Press Win+R, enter
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Boot tab and select Advanced options.
- Clear Debug.
- Click OK > Apply > OK.
- Restart Windows.
12. Test with a new Windows user account
If Roblox still fails after a clean reinstall and system repair, the original Windows profile may have damaged permissions or user-specific configuration.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Add a new local Windows user account.
- Sign in to that account and install or launch Roblox.
If Roblox works in the new account, the problem is tied to the original profile. You can move your files to the new profile or repair the original account’s configuration.
What not to rely on as a universal fix
- Running Roblox permanently as administrator.
- Using Windows compatibility mode.
- Leaving Windows Defender or the firewall disabled.
- Forwarding one fixed Roblox port on the router.
These steps may change symptoms, but Roblox’s current troubleshooting guidance emphasizes clean installation and data removal, Windows repair, security-software allow-listing, and isolating third-party programs.

Can I delete the Roblox folder in AppData?
