There is no separate official Netflix setup file or command-line installer for Windows. The current app requires Microsoft Edge to be installed, even if you plan to use another browser for everyday web browsing.
Before installing Netflix
- Your computer must run Windows 10 or later.
- Microsoft Edge must be installed. Netflix requires it for the Windows app. If Edge is missing, install it from the Microsoft Store when prompted.
- You need an internet connection and, if Microsoft requests it, a Microsoft account for installing Store apps.
- You need a Netflix account to sign in after installation.
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 are outside the current Netflix app installation path. Netflix says these systems are no longer supported by Microsoft and cannot be updated to a Windows version that works with the app. Windows 8 or 8.1 may still play Netflix in a browser in Standard Definition, but those systems are not supported for the current app installation.
Install the Netflix app from the Microsoft Store
- Open the Start menu.
- Select Store to open the Microsoft Store.
- Select Search.
- Type Netflix in the search box and press Enter.
- Select Netflix from the search results. Check that you have selected the official Netflix app rather than an unrelated search result.
- Select Install.
- If Windows asks for authentication, sign in with your Microsoft account credentials and allow the installation to continue.
- When installation finishes, open the Start menu.
- Select the Netflix app.
- Select Sign In, enter the email address and password for your Netflix account, and select Sign In again.
You can later open the app from Start, or right-click Netflix in the Start menu and choose Pin to taskbar if you want a shortcut that is always visible.
What changed in the current Windows app?
The current Netflix Windows app supports live events, higher streaming quality, and ad-supported Netflix plans. However, it no longer supports downloading films or shows for offline viewing.

This means that a missing Download button is not normally an installation fault. Previously downloaded titles may also disappear after the new app is installed. Netflix says there is no supported way to roll back to the old Windows app.
| Feature | Current Windows app |
|---|---|
| Streaming | Supported |
| Live events | Supported |
| Ad-supported plans | Supported |
| Offline downloads | Not supported |
| Returning to the old app | Not supported |
If you need offline viewing, use a supported mobile device, Amazon Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook instead. Downloads stored by an older app are also deleted if you uninstall or reset the app, clear its app data, or otherwise remove the local app data.
Update Netflix when the app requires it
If Netflix displays “A new version of the Netflix app is available and required to continue,” update it through the Microsoft Store:
- Open the Microsoft Store from the taskbar or Start menu.
- Select More (…).
- Select Downloads and Updates.
- Find Netflix and select Download beside it.
- Wait for the update to complete, then close and reopen Netflix.
If the update does not begin, check that Windows is online and that you are signed in to the Microsoft Store with the account used to install the app.

If Netflix does not appear in the Microsoft Store
Netflix directs users to Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance when the app cannot be found or installed through the Store. There is no separate Netflix command or special installer for this situation.
Start with these checks:
- Confirm that the computer is running Windows 10 or Windows 11 by opening Settings → System → About.
- Install or repair Microsoft Edge if it is missing.
- Open the Microsoft Store and check for Store or Windows updates.
- Sign out of the Microsoft Store, restart Windows, and sign in again.
- Search for Netflix again using the Store’s search box rather than a third-party download site.
Avoid downloading “Netflix installers” from unofficial websites. Netflix’s official Windows installation route is the Microsoft Store.
Use Netflix in a browser instead
The app is optional. Open netflix.com in a supported browser, sign in, and stream from the website.
| Browser on Windows | Minimum version listed by Netflix | Maximum listed resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Edge | 118 or later | Up to Ultra HD (2160p), where requirements are met |
| Google Chrome | 117 or later | Up to Ultra HD (2160p), where requirements are met |
| Mozilla Firefox | 111 or later | Up to Full HD (1080p) |
| Opera | 92 or later | Up to Full HD (1080p) |
Browser playback does not restore offline downloads on Windows. It is simply an alternative way to stream without installing the app.

Requirements for 4K playback
Installing Netflix does not automatically enable 4K. Netflix lists several requirements for Ultra HD playback on Windows:
- A compatible, fully updated Windows 11 installation.
- A Netflix plan that includes Ultra HD.
- Playback quality set to Auto or High.
- An internet connection of at least 15 Mbps.
- The Netflix app or a supported browser.
- Compatible computer hardware and graphics hardware.
- A 4K display running at 60 Hz.
- An HDCP 2.2-compatible connection between the computer and display.
- The required HEVC codec. Some Windows 11 computers do not include it and may need the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
If Netflix plays in a lower resolution, the cause may be the plan, display connection, graphics hardware, browser, network speed, or codec—not the installation itself.
Offline-download error VC2-CV1-ER
If you try to download a title and see “Download Error — There was a problem with this download. (VC2-CV1-ER)”, the app is behaving according to its current design. Netflix says the Windows app no longer supports downloads and recommends using another supported device for offline viewing.
Reinstalling Netflix, clearing its data, or searching for an older installer will not restore the download feature. There is no supported rollback to the previous Windows app.

Uninstall Netflix
To remove the app, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find Netflix, select the three-dot menu beside it, and choose Uninstall. You can install it again later from the Microsoft Store.
Uninstalling or resetting an app removes its stored app data. This matters for older Netflix installations that contained downloaded titles, although downloads are not available in the current Windows app.
