ChatGPT download errors usually fall into one of three categories: a generated file link has expired or failed, a saved file needs to be downloaded from Library, or a complete account export is still being prepared. The message may appear as “Download failed” or “File Not Found.”
Use the section that matches what you are trying to download. Then retry in a clean browser session before changing account settings or recreating the file.
Quick fixes for a ChatGPT download that failed
- Return to the conversation and generate the file again. Generated-file links can expire quickly.
- Make sure the file is smaller than 512 MB. If it is larger, ask ChatGPT to split it into several files or create a smaller version.
- Hard-refresh ChatGPT with Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R.
- Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window and try the link again.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions, URL blockers, content blockers, secure-DNS tools, and security filters.
- Disable any VPN or proxy and retry.
- Try another browser, device, or network.
If the link works in a private window, an extension, cached page, VPN, or network security filter is the likely cause. If it fails everywhere, continue with the relevant section below.
When the generated file link says “File Not Found”
A file produced inside a ChatGPT conversation is not necessarily available forever through the original link. OpenAI notes that generated files can expire quickly, so a link that worked earlier may later return “File Not Found.” This does not necessarily mean that your browser or the file itself is damaged.

The most reliable fix is to return to the conversation and ask ChatGPT to recreate the file. Be specific about the format and contents, for example:
“Recreate the spreadsheet as an XLSX file with the same data. Keep it under 50 MB and provide a new download link.”
For large reports or data files, request a smaller output. You can ask for a CSV instead of an XLSX file, split a dataset into several parts, remove unnecessary images, or generate a ZIP containing smaller files. Every individual generated file still needs to stay below the applicable limit.
Check whether the file is in Library
ChatGPT’s Library is the place to retrieve files uploaded to or created in supported chats. It is available on the web and keeps files separate from the original conversation’s attachment link.

- Open Library from the left-hand sidebar.
- Search for the file or browse the list.
- Use the filters to select Uploaded or Generated.
- Optionally filter by Images, Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, or PDFs.
- Select the file and click Download.
If you cannot find the file, check that you are signed in to the same ChatGPT account and workspace used to create it. Files uploaded in Temporary Chat are not saved to the account or Library. Files uploaded while using ChatGPT Health, where available, are also not saved to the account.
Generated images continue to appear in the Images tab rather than being treated like ordinary Library files.

Check Library storage and file limits
Open Library, then select Storage to see total usage, remaining storage, and whether the account is over its limit. OpenAI’s Library documentation lists these storage limits:

OpenAI’s Library documentation lists per-file limits of 512 MB per file, up to 2 million tokens for text and document files, approximately 50 MB for CSV and spreadsheet files depending on row size, and 20 MB per image. The 2-million-token limit does not apply to spreadsheets.
Deleting a chat does not delete files already saved to Library. To remove a Library file, select it in Library and click Delete, or use the trash icon beside it. Deleted files are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to security, legal-retention, or de-identification exceptions.
Fix browser, VPN, and security-filter problems
ChatGPT file links can be blocked even when ordinary chat messages load correctly. This is common on managed work networks and systems that inspect downloads or block unfamiliar URLs.
Test in a private window
Open a private or incognito window, sign in to ChatGPT, open the conversation, and click the file link. This avoids most cached-session and extension problems. If it works, disable extensions in your normal browser one at a time, starting with:
- Ad blockers and content blockers
- Download managers
- Privacy or tracking-protection extensions
- URL-blocking tools
- Antivirus browser extensions
Turn off VPN or proxy connections
Temporarily disconnect from a VPN or proxy and retry the download. OpenAI specifically lists VPNs and proxies as possible causes of “Download failed” and “File Not Found.” If the download works without the VPN, try another server or ask the VPN administrator whether generated-file URLs are being blocked.
Try a different network
Test a phone hotspot instead of a company, school, or public Wi-Fi network. A different result points to a firewall, DNS filter, proxy, or endpoint-security policy rather than a problem with the ChatGPT conversation.
If a custom GPT cannot create a downloadable file
A custom GPT needs the capability labeled Code Interpreter & Data Analysis to create and return downloadable files.
- Open the custom GPT editor.
- Find its capabilities.
- Enable Code Interpreter & Data Analysis.
- Update the GPT after changing the capability.
- Run the task again.
Updating the GPT matters: enabling the capability without saving or updating the GPT may leave the old configuration active.
If it still fails, ask the custom GPT for a smaller file, confirm that file generation completed, and run the same request in the GPT’s Preview. Preview helps distinguish a configuration problem from a general file-link failure.

If the file depends on outside data, upload the data or provide it through an available connected source first.
Downloading your ChatGPT data as a ZIP
If you want your chat history and account data rather than one file from a conversation, use the data-export feature:
- Open the profile menu.
- Go to Settings > Data controls.
- Select Export data.
- Click Export, then Confirm export.
When the export is ready, OpenAI sends a message by email or SMS. Open it and select Download data export. The download is a ZIP file containing chat history and other relevant account data.
The export link expires 24 hours after it is received. You must be signed in to the same account that requested the export. Exports can take up to seven days to arrive, so check your inbox, spam, and promotions folders. Phone-only accounts receive the link by SMS.

- The ChatGPT model used
- The conversation URL or conversation ID
- Your browser and operating system

Do not repeatedly share sensitive files or account information in a public forum. A file-generation problem can be a temporary generic file-link error and is not always caused by your GPT settings or account.

Why does ChatGPT say “Download failed”?
