Microsoft Edge does not currently add a custom search engine by asking you to type a name, keyword, and %s URL into a settings form. Its supported method is simpler: search the site from Edge’s address bar first, then select that site from the detected search-engine list.

The site must use OpenSearch. If it does not provide a compatible OpenSearch search description, Edge may not list it as an available search engine.

What you need before adding a search engine

  • Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, Windows 10, or Windows 8.1.
  • A search website that supports OpenSearch.
  • At least one search performed through Edge’s address bar, not only through a page’s search box.

Microsoft’s current support documentation does not specify a minimum or maximum Edge version for this procedure. The feature is also separate from installing an Edge extension: you do not need an extension to add a supported search website.

How to add a custom search engine in Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Search the website from the address bar. Click the address bar, type a search term, and include the search website in the query if necessary. For example, choose the site’s search provider or enter its address before searching. The important requirement is that the search is made from Edge’s address bar using that searchable website.
  3. Click Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
  4. Choose Settings.
  5. Open Privacy, search, and services.
  6. Click Search and connected services.
  7. Select Address bar and search.
  8. Open the Search engine used in the address bar menu.
  9. Select the website or search engine that Edge detected from your earlier search.

There is no separate Add button in Microsoft’s current consumer procedure. Edge discovers the provider after you use it from the address bar, then makes it available in the selection list.

How to make the new engine your default

Once the site appears under Address bar and search, select it in Search engine used in the address bar. New searches entered directly into the address bar will then use that provider.

This setting affects address-bar searches. It does not mean that every search box displayed inside every webpage will use the same provider; a site’s own search form can continue to use its separately configured service.

What to do if the search engine does not appear

Check the two prerequisites first:

  1. Repeat the search from Edge’s address bar. Searching only inside the website may not trigger Edge’s discovery process.
  2. Confirm that the site supports OpenSearch. Microsoft says the default can be changed to a site that uses this technology. A site without a compatible OpenSearch description may not appear in Edge’s list.

Also make sure you opened the correct settings location: Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search.

Do not expect to solve this by entering a manually constructed search URL or a %s placeholder. Microsoft’s current instructions do not document that as the normal Edge consumer procedure.

When an extension changes your search engine

An Edge extension can change the default search engine automatically. If your preferred provider was replaced, restore it by opening:

Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected experiences > Address bar and search

Then choose the provider under Search engine used in address bar.

Microsoft uses Search and connected services in its primary search-engine instructions but Search and connected experiences in its extensions FAQ. The wording differs between the two current Microsoft pages; the final Address bar and search page is the relevant destination.

Review or disable a suspicious extension

  1. Click the Extensions puzzle-piece icon.
  2. Select Manage Extensions.
  3. Check which extensions are enabled and review an extension’s Details page and permissions.
  4. If appropriate, disable and re-enable the extension, check for an update, and ensure Edge itself is up to date.

Installing an extension is not required to add a search engine. The extension installation route is Extensions > Get Extensions for Microsoft Edge > Get > Add extension; use it only when you deliberately want the extension’s functionality.

What if Edge says an extension is managed by your organization?

On a work or school computer, an administrator may control extensions and search settings.

  1. Enter edge://extensions in the address bar.
  2. Look for the briefcase icon and the label managed by your organization.
  3. Enter edge://policy in a new tab to inspect active policies.

Relevant policy names can include ExtensionSettings and ExtensionInstallForcelist. If the computer is organization-managed, consult your IT department before changing anything. Do not routinely delete policies or edit the registry to force a search-engine change.

Microsoft documents the following advanced commands for a confirmed unwanted Edge policy, but these are troubleshooting commands—not part of the normal process for adding a search engine:

FAQ

Can I manually enter any search URL in Edge?

Microsoft’s current documented consumer procedure does not provide an Add button for entering a search-engine name, keyword, and URL template. Search the provider from Edge’s address bar first, then select it under Address bar and search. The provider must support OpenSearch.

Why is my website missing from Edge’s search-engine list?

Repeat the search from Edge’s address bar and check whether the website uses OpenSearch. A site that lacks a compatible OpenSearch search description may not be detected by Edge.

Do I need an extension to add a custom search engine?

No. Microsoft’s supported procedure uses the address bar and Edge Settings. Extensions are a separate feature, although an installed extension can change the default search engine.

How do I stop an extension from changing my search engine?

Open Extensions (the puzzle-piece icon) > Manage Extensions, review enabled extensions and their permissions, and disable or remove the extension if appropriate. You can then restore your provider under Address bar and search.

Can a work or school administrator prevent the change?

Yes. Open edge://extensions to look for a briefcase icon or “managed by your organization,” and open edge://policy to inspect active policies. Ask your IT department before changing organization-managed extensions or policies.

The Bottom Line

To add a supported custom search engine, search with it from Edge’s address bar, then go to Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search. Choose it under Search engine used in the address bar. If it is not listed, check the address-bar requirement and the site’s OpenSearch support before troubleshooting extensions or organization policies.
