In a normal Microsoft Word calendar template, the year is usually ordinary text arranged in tables, text boxes, shapes, or graphics. Word does not recalculate the 12 months when you type a new year. To change it, open the original template, replace the displayed year, and update the month dates manually—or create a calendar that uses a separate generator or macro.
The Page Design > Change Template > Set Calendar Dates command often mentioned in online instructions belongs to Microsoft Publisher, not Word.
Change the year in a Word calendar template
These steps apply to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016 on Windows. The labels may vary slightly in older installations.

- Select File > Open.
- Double-click This PC.
- Browse to Documents > Custom Office Templates.
- Select the calendar template and choose Open.
- Change the year shown in the title or headings.
- Correct the day numbers in each month. A new year can change the weekday on which every month begins, and leap years add February 29.
- Save the template and close it.
If you open the template from the New screen and create a document from it, you may edit only that new document. Saving that document does not necessarily change the original template. Open the template file from Custom Office Templates when you want the revised year to appear in future documents.

Why changing only the year is not enough
Most Word calendar templates are static layouts. They do not know that a particular number is a date, so changing “2025” to “2026” does not move the dates into their correct weekdays. For example, January 1 falls on a different weekday in different years, and February has 29 days only in a leap year.
After changing the heading, check all of the following:
- The weekday alignment of the first day of every month
- The number of days in February
- Any dates repeated in notes, captions, or holiday labels
- Year references in headers, footers, cover pages, and images
- Page breaks and table spacing caused by the edits
Find out whether the calendar uses editable text
Click the year or one of the day numbers. The editing method depends on what Word selects:

If objects are difficult to select, use Home > Select > Selection Pane to identify text boxes, shapes, and pictures layered on the page. You can also turn on nonprinting marks with Home > ¶ to make table and paragraph structure easier to inspect.
What to do when the template is protected
Protection can prevent you from changing the calendar. Look for Review > Restrict Editing or, for form controls, Developer > Restrict Editing. If the document asks for a password, you need the template owner’s password or an unprotected copy.
A content control can also be locked individually. Select it, choose Developer > Properties, and inspect the Locking options. A control with Contents cannot be edited or Content control cannot be deleted enabled may not accept a new year.

Enable the Developer tab if the template uses controls
Some templates use date fields or content controls. To expose the relevant tools:

- Choose Customize Ribbon.
- Under Main Tabs, select Developer.
- Choose OK.
A Developer > Date Picker Content Control is an individual date-entry control. It is not a year-wide calendar generator. Its properties can change the way that one date is displayed, but inserting or editing it will not recalculate all 12 months.
Be careful with automatic Date & Time fields
Word can insert a date through Insert > Text > Date & Time. If you select Update automatically, Word inserts a field that changes when the document opens. That is useful for a “last updated” line, but it is unsuitable for a calendar that must remain fixed to a chosen year.
To change an automatically updating field, click the gray field, type the replacement date, and click outside it. However, Word can restore the current date the next time the file opens. For a fixed calendar year, replace the field with ordinary text or remove the automatic-update behavior rather than relying on the field.
If the controls or layout tools are missing
The file may be in an older format. Select File > Info > Convert, choose OK, and save the converted document or template. Then reopen it and check whether the expected controls are available.

How to make a reusable calendar that changes years automatically
Word does not provide a documented “Change Calendar Year” command for ordinary calendar templates. If you need automatic year changes, the calendar must be redesigned with custom automation, such as a VBA macro in a .dotm template, or generated outside Word and imported as a table or image.

A macro-based solution would need to calculate each month’s first weekday, the number of days in each month, leap-year rules, and the locations of the calendar’s table cells. It would also need to handle holidays and any layout changes. That is substantially different from changing a year heading in a static template, and macros should be enabled only in files from a trusted source.
For occasional use, the safer approach is usually to generate a calendar for the required year, copy it into Word, or select a new Word calendar template designed for that year.
Word for Mac and Word for the web
The Windows desktop instructions above should not be assumed to apply exactly to Word for Mac or Word for the web. Microsoft’s Mac instructions use File > Save as Template and offer Microsoft Word template (.dotx) or Microsoft Word Macro-Enabled template. Mac templates are normally stored in:

In Publisher, the calendar date command is genuinely available at Page Design > Change Template > Set Calendar Dates. The dialog lets you enter a Start date and End date, then either apply the template to the current publication or create a new publication using the existing text and graphics.
That procedure does not work in Word because Word has no documented command with that name. If you specifically need automatic calendar date ranges and already have Publisher, Publisher is the Microsoft application designed for that workflow.

FAQ
Can Word automatically change all calendar dates when I change the year?
Not in a standard Word calendar template. Word’s ordinary calendar layouts are generally static tables, text boxes, shapes, or graphics. You must edit the dates manually or use a separately designed macro or calendar generator.
Where is “Set Calendar Dates” in Microsoft Word?
It is not a Word command. The path Page Design > Change Template > Set Calendar Dates belongs to Microsoft Publisher.
How do I edit the original Word calendar template instead of one copy?
Use File > Open > This PC, browse to Documents > Custom Office Templates, open the template, make the changes, and save it. Editing a document created from the template changes only that document.
Why did February remain wrong after I changed the year?
The calendar’s numbers are probably static. Check whether the new year is a leap year, then correct February’s number of days and the weekday alignment for every month.
Does Word’s Date Picker create a full calendar for a year?
No. Developer > Date Picker Content Control inserts one date-entry control. Its display settings do not generate or recalculate a 12-month calendar.
Why can’t I edit the year in my template?
The file may be protected, the year may be part of an image, or a content control may be locked. Check Review > Restrict Editing, inspect controls through Developer > Properties, and see whether Word selects a picture rather than editable text.

For a standard Word calendar, open the original template, replace the year, and manually verify every month’s dates and weekday positions. Word has no built-in “Set Calendar Dates” command; that feature belongs to Publisher. If automatic year changes are essential, use a calendar generator or build a properly tested macro-enabled template instead of relying on a static Word layout.
