“JPG preview” can mean two different things in Windows 11:

  • Thumbnails: small image representations displayed in a folder.
  • Preview pane: a larger image shown beside the file list.

A third, related problem occurs when JPG files will not open at all. The fix depends on which of these is failing, so start by identifying the symptom. If thumbnails are missing but files open normally, begin with the thumbnail setting. If the Preview pane is blank, repair the pane or its preview handlers. If double-clicking a JPG fails, repair the Photos app or its file association.

1. Turn JPG thumbnails back on

If folders show generic file icons instead of small JPG images, change the File Explorer thumbnail setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select See more (…) on the command bar.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Open the View tab.
  5. Clear Always show icons, never thumbnails.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Close and reopen the affected folder.

This setting controls whether Windows displays image thumbnails or ordinary file icons. It does not control the larger Preview pane.

Some older instructions use View > Options > Change folder and search options. On current Windows 11 builds, the more direct route is See more > Options.

2. Enable the File Explorer Preview pane

If you want to see a larger JPG without opening it, enable the Preview pane:

  1. Open the folder containing the JPG.
  2. Select View > Show > Preview pane.
  3. Select the JPG file.

The Preview pane should appear beside the file list. Windows 11 does not consistently provide a dedicated “Preview” command in the modern right-click menu. If you need an older command, right-click the file and select Show more options, but the supported pane control is View > Show > Preview pane.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Fix a blank Preview pane

If the pane is visible but remains blank for every image, preview handlers may be disabled.

  1. In File Explorer, select See more > Options.
  2. Select the View tab.
  3. Enable Show preview handlers in preview pane.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.
  5. Reopen the folder and select a JPG.

This setting affects more than JPG files. If PDFs, documents, PNGs, and other supported files also fail to preview, the problem is probably the Preview pane or its handler configuration rather than JPG decoding.

4. Restart Windows Explorer

A temporary Explorer failure can make thumbnails or the Preview pane disappear, especially after Explorer stops responding.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Find Windows Explorer in the process list.
  3. Select it.
  4. Select Restart.

Return to the folder and test the JPG again. Restarting Explorer refreshes the file-management process; it does not repair the Photos app or change JPG file associations.

5. Repair or reset Microsoft Photos

If JPG files will not open when double-clicked, or Windows displays an error such as “The specified procedure could not be found,” the Photos app may be damaged or incorrectly registered.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft Photos.
  4. Select … next to it, then select Advanced options.
  5. Under Reset, select Repair.
  6. Test a JPG after the repair.
  7. If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset.

Repair should be tried first because it repairs the app without removing its app data. Reset clears the app’s data and settings, so use it only if Repair does not help.

A Photos failure does not prove that the JPG is corrupt. For example, a file that fails to open by double-click but works through Open with > Photos, Paint, or another image viewer usually points to an app-registration or file-association problem.

6. Reassign the JPG file association

Windows may be trying to open JPG files with a broken or incorrect application.

Change the association for one JPG

  1. Right-click the JPG.
  2. Select Open with > Choose another app.
  3. Select Photos or another installed image viewer.
  4. Enable Always use this app to open .jpg files.
  5. Select OK.

To change the default more broadly, open Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps. Search for .jpg, select the current associated application, and choose a replacement.

If you cannot see the extension, enable it in File Explorer with View > Show > File name extensions. This helps distinguish a genuine .jpg file from a file with a misleading name.

7. Check Pictures-library access

Microsoft Store apps such as Photos may need access to the Pictures library. A permission problem is more likely when Photos opens JPGs from one folder but not from Pictures, OneDrive, a removable drive, or a network location.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security > Pictures.
  3. Turn on Pictures-library access.
  4. Allow the affected app if it appears in the list.

Windows privacy restrictions can prevent an app from using content in a library as intended. Test the same JPG from a local folder after changing the permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Test a different folder and a known-good file

Create a new folder on the local drive and copy one known-good JPG and one PNG into it. Then test both thumbnails and the Preview pane.

Test result Likely cause
JPG and PNG work in the new folder The original folder, its location, permissions, or a third-party shell/preview handler is involved.
Neither file previews anywhere Preview pane settings, preview handlers, Explorer, or Windows system components may be affected.
Only one JPG fails That file may be incomplete, inaccessible, or encoded in a way the viewer cannot process.
Files preview but do not open The Photos app or JPG file association is more likely than the image data itself.

Cloud files may also be online-only. Make the JPG available locally before testing. A file stored on a network or removable drive can similarly fail when Windows or Photos cannot access the location.

9. Install Windows updates and restart

File Explorer and Photos problems can follow an incomplete update or be fixed by a later one.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates.
  4. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.

After restarting, test both a local JPG and the original problem file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Repair Windows system files

If thumbnails, the Preview pane, Photos, and other Windows features are failing, repair the component store and system files. Microsoft’s current order is DISM first, followed by System File Checker.

  1. Type command prompt in the taskbar search box.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator, then select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for the message The operation completed successfully. Then run:

Restart Windows and test the JPG again. Do not run SFC first if you are following Microsoft’s current repair sequence; DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC may need.

FAQ

Why are JPG thumbnails showing as icons in Windows 11?

Open File Explorer, select See more (…) > Options > View, and clear Always show icons, never thumbnails. Select Apply and OK, then reopen the folder.

How do I show a large JPG preview in File Explorer?

Open the folder, then select View > Show > Preview pane. Select a JPG in the file list to display it in the pane.

Why is the Windows 11 Preview pane blank?

First enable View > Show > Preview pane. If the pane is still blank, open See more > Options > View and enable Show preview handlers in preview pane.

Why will JPG files not open after repairing Photos?

Repair the app first, then try Reset under Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Photos > … > Advanced options. If that fails, reassign .jpg under Settings > Apps > Default apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a JPG that will not preview mean it is corrupt?

Not necessarily. If the file opens in Paint, another image viewer, or through Open with, the problem is more likely to be the Photos app, file association, permissions, or the file location.

What should I do if JPGs work in a new folder but not the original one?

Check the original folder’s permissions and location. Cloud, network, removable-drive, and third-party shell or preview handlers can affect one folder without affecting local files.

The Bottom Line

For missing small images, clear Always show icons, never thumbnails. For a missing or blank large preview, enable the Preview pane and Show preview handlers in preview pane. If JPGs will not open, repair Microsoft Photos, reset it if necessary, and reassign the .jpg association. Then check Pictures access, local file availability, Windows updates, and system files if the problem affects more than one folder or app.
