For a conventional Windows installation, use the Python 3.11.9 Windows installer. Python 3.11.15 is newer, but it is a source-only security release with no Windows installer; Python 3.11.9 is the last 3.11 release with Windows installers.
This guide covers the installer and Microsoft Store options, PATH, verification, virtual environments, silent installation, and common problems.
Before installing Python 3.11
Python 3.11 supports Windows 8.1 and newer. The Microsoft Store package requires Windows 10 or newer. The Python documentation for Windows describes these requirements.
Python 3.11 no longer receives regular bug-fix releases. It is in the security-only phase, with irregular source-only security releases planned through approximately October 2027, according to PEP 664. If a project specifically requires Python 3.11, install it; otherwise, check whether the project supports a newer release.

Choose the correct Python 3.11 download
Open the official Python 3.11.9 release page. Python.org’s current Windows downloads page no longer lists Python 3.11 among current installer releases, but the archived 3.11.9 page still offers its Windows installers.

The full installer is available as a web installer or an offline installer. The web installer downloads components during setup. The offline installer includes components for a default installation, though optional features may still need internet access.
Do not download the Python 3.11.15 source archive for a standard Windows installation. It is for building Python from source and does not include a Windows installer.
Install Python 3.11 with the full Windows installer
- Download Windows installer (64-bit) from the Python 3.11.9 release page, unless your system needs another architecture.
- Run the downloaded python-3.11.9-amd64.exe file.
- On the first installer screen, optionally select Add Python to PATH. This adds the Python installation directory and its Scripts directory to PATH, making Python and pip available in a new terminal.
- Choose Install Now for a current-user installation or Customize installation for more control.
- Approve the installation if Windows requests administrator permission.
- When setup finishes, open a new Command Prompt or PowerShell window.
Install Now or Customize installation?
Install Now suits most users. It normally installs Python for the current user, along with the standard library, test suite, launcher, and pip. It places Python in the user directory and normally does not require administrator rights.
Choose Customize installation for an all-users installation, a specific location, or control over optional features. An all-users installation normally places Python under Program Files, creates shortcuts for all users, and may require administrator approval.
You cannot change the installation directory using maintenance-mode Modify. To change it, uninstall Python and install it again in the desired location.
Verify the installation
Open a new Command Prompt or PowerShell window after installation or PATH changes. Existing terminal processes do not automatically receive PATH changes.

Check the version selected through PATH by running python –version. Check the version selected by the Python Launcher with py –version. To list runtimes detected by the launcher, run py –list.
To explicitly start Python 3.11 when several versions are installed, run py -3.11. Type exit() to leave the interactive shell.
To see which executable each command uses, run where python and where py. The python command follows PATH and Windows app-alias resolution; py uses the launcher’s version-selection rules. They can start different Python versions.
Create a Python 3.11 virtual environment
Use a virtual environment for each project so its packages do not interfere with other projects.
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Change to your project directory. For example, run cd C:\Users\YourName\Documents\my-project.
- Create an environment explicitly with Python 3.11 by running py -3.11 -m venv .venv.
- In Command Prompt, activate it with .venv\Scripts\activate.
- In PowerShell, activate it with .\.venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1.
After activation, the terminal prompt normally begins with (.venv). Confirm the interpreter and pip belong to the environment by running python –version and python -m pip –version. Using python -m pip ensures pip runs under the active interpreter.

If you did not select Add Python to PATH during setup, open the installer again, select Modify, enable the PATH option, and complete the maintenance operation.
You can also edit PATH manually:
- Open Start and search for edit environment variables, or open System Properties and select Advanced system settings.
- Select Environment Variables.
- Under User variables or System variables, select Path and choose Edit.
- Add the directory containing python.exe and its Scripts directory.
- Confirm the changes and open a new terminal.
PATH can be unreliable when multiple Python versions are installed. Windows places user-level PATH entries after system-level entries, so another installation may be selected. Use py -3.11 when you need to specify the version.

Install Python 3.11 from the Microsoft Store
The Microsoft Store is an alternative to the traditional installer and requires Windows 10 or newer.
- Open Microsoft Store and search for Python 3.11.
- Select the app published by Python Software Foundation.
- Choose Install.
The official Python Store package is free. A payment request means you selected the wrong package.

Keep the pip and idle aliases consistent with the selected python alias.
If another Python installation appears earlier in PATH, python may start that installation instead of the Store package. The Store version may still be available through python3 or python3.11. The py launcher detects Store installations but prefers installations made with the traditional installer.
The Store package can restrict filesystem, temporary-directory, and registry operations. Use the full installer when a tool needs to modify shared locations such as TEMP or the registry.
Silent installation
Administrators can install Python from Command Prompt without showing the normal installer interface. For example, run python-3.11.9-amd64.exe /quiet.

Fix common Python 3.11 installation problems
“py” is not recognized
The Python Launcher for Windows may not have been installed or may not be on PATH. It is a separate installer component. Rerun the installer, select Modify, and enable the launcher if available.
“python” opens the Microsoft Store
Windows is using its Python app-execution alias because it cannot find a usable Python executable earlier in PATH. Open Manage App Execution Aliases and adjust the Python aliases, or install Python with the full installer and enable Add Python to PATH.
“python” and “py” show different versions
PATH may resolve to one installation while the launcher selects another. Run py –list to see detected runtimes, then use py -3.11 –version to check Python 3.11.
“pip” is not recognized
The Python Scripts directory may be missing from PATH, or the pip app alias may point to another installation. Enable the installer’s PATH option, open a new terminal, and run python -m pip –version.
Long-path errors occur during package installation
Windows historically imposed a 260-character path limit. Longer paths require administrator activation of the Enable Win32 long paths policy or setting LongPathsEnabled to 1 at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem. Be careful when editing the registry; using a shorter project directory can also avoid many path-length problems.

For the traditional installer:
- Open Windows’ legacy program-management interface.
- Select the Python 3.11 entry and choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Uninstall on the maintenance screen.
The maintenance screen also offers Modify to add or remove selectable features and Repair to replace missing or modified files. The Python Launcher has a separate Windows entry and may remain installed after Python is removed.
For the Microsoft Store package, open Settings → Apps → Apps and Features, select Python, and choose Uninstall. You can also find Python in Start, right-click it, and select Uninstall. Packages installed inside the Store package are removed, but virtual environments are not.
