Microsoft Edge uses three separate settings that are easy to confuse:
- Home page: the page opened by the Home button.
- Startup page: what Edge displays when the browser launches.
- New Tab page: what appears when you click + or press Ctrl+T.
They are managed from the same desktop settings section, but changing one does not automatically change the others. The instructions below apply to the current Chromium-based Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Change the Home page in Microsoft Edge
The Home page is associated with Edge’s Home button. Setting a URL here does not make that URL open automatically when Edge starts.

- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open Start, home, and new tab page.
- Turn on Show home button on the toolbar.
- Choose Enter URL, then type or paste the address you want to use.
You can also choose New tab page if you want the Home button to open Edge’s standard New Tab page.

For example, to make the Home button open a company intranet, enter its complete address, such as https://intranet.example.com. Save or leave the setting; Edge applies the change immediately.
Once enabled, select the house-shaped Home button on the toolbar to open the configured page. On Windows, the shortcut is Alt+Home. On macOS, use Command+Shift+H.
Change what Edge opens at startup
Startup controls what Edge shows after you launch the browser. It is separate from the Home button and from the page opened by Ctrl+T.
- Select Settings and more (…) .
- Choose Settings.
- Open Start, home, and new tab page.
- Review the startup options shown in that section and select the behavior you want.
- If you choose to open specific pages, add the web addresses that Edge should load at launch.
Some Edge help pages and older installations label this area On startup. If you do not see that exact heading, look for Start, home, and new tab page; Microsoft currently uses that combined section for these settings.
Typical startup choices let you resume the previous session or open a defined page or set of pages. A startup page can therefore be different from your Home page. For instance, Edge can open your work dashboard at launch while the Home button opens a search engine.
Change the New Tab page’s appearance and content
In the standard Edge configuration, the New Tab page is not changed to an arbitrary URL by the page’s gear control. That control changes the appearance and content of Microsoft’s New Tab page, including its layout, background, quick links, and news feed.

- Open a new tab by selecting the + button or pressing Ctrl+T.
- Select Settings in the upper-right corner of the New Tab page. Microsoft also refers to this control as Page settings in some documentation.
- Choose the layout and content options you want.
- Adjust the background, quick links, and news or feed options as available.
If you want every new tab to load a completely different website, check your installed extensions. An extension that replaces the New Tab page is usually responsible; the built-in New Tab settings control Microsoft’s page rather than acting as a general URL field.

Use the direct Edge settings address
You can jump directly to the relevant desktop settings by entering this in Edge’s address bar:
edge://settings/startHomeNTP
Press Enter, then configure the Home button, startup behavior, or New Tab-related settings from the page that opens. The visible menu route is more useful when helping someone else because Microsoft can change internal settings addresses, but this shortcut is convenient on your own computer.
Change the Home page in Edge on Android
Edge’s mobile menus differ from the desktop browser. On Android:
- Open Edge and select Menu (…) .
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Home page.
- Choose New tab page or A specific page.
- For a specific page, enter a web address, use the current page, or paste a copied address.
- Tap SAVE.
Android Edge also has separate New Tab and news controls. Go to Menu (…) → Settings → New tab page to change the region or language, turn off Show my news feed, or select another news source.

On iOS, open Menu (…) → Settings → New tab page. From there, you can turn Show my news feed off or change the news source.

Microsoft’s mobile documentation provides a Home page setting but does not document a desktop-style startup-page selector for Android or iOS. Do not expect the desktop Start, home, and new tab page menu to appear in the mobile apps.
When Edge keeps reverting to the wrong page
Disable extensions that modify the New Tab page
If your New Tab page changes back after you select a different layout or setting, an extension may be taking control.
- Enter
edge://extensionsin the address bar. - Review the installed extensions, especially search, shopping, productivity, and “new tab” tools.
- Turn off extensions that modify the New Tab page.
- Open a new tab and test the result.
- Remove the extension if disabling it fixes the problem and you do not need it.
Return to edge://settings/startHomeNTP and confirm the Home and startup choices after disabling the extension.

Check whether an organization policy is enforcing the setting
An extension or browser policy can override your selection. Open edge://extensions and look for a briefcase icon or the message managed by your organization. That label can appear on a work-managed computer, but Microsoft also warns that a malicious extension can display it on a personally owned PC.
For more detail, open:
edge://policy
Look for policies such as ExtensionSettings and ExtensionInstallForcelist. A policy-controlled extension may not be removable from Edge’s normal Extensions page. If this is a work or school device, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
Scan a personal computer if an unknown extension is managed
If you do not recognize the extension or policy on your own computer, run a full scan with Microsoft Defender or another reputable antivirus program. Do not install a suggested “cleanup” tool from a pop-up claiming that Edge is infected.

Update Edge
Page settings can behave unexpectedly when Edge is out of date. Open:

Alternatively, select Settings and more (…) → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge. The page may show Microsoft Edge is up to date, Download and install, or Restart. If an update has been downloaded, select Restart to finish applying it.
Update controls such as Download and install updates automatically and Download updates over metered connections may be unavailable when an organization manages the browser.

Only use this step on a personally owned computer after confirming that the policies are unwanted. Removing a policy branch can affect more than the Home or New Tab setting.
Microsoft documents these policy locations:

Registry changes are risky. Back up the registry first, and do not delete policy keys on a company-managed computer without permission. Microsoft’s documented commands, run from PowerShell as administrator, are:
reg delete HKCUSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge /f
reg delete HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge /fThese commands remove all policies in those Edge branches, not just a forced Home page policy. Restart Edge afterward, then check edge://policy and the Start, home, and new tab page settings again.

Why does changing the Home page not change the page Edge opens when I start it?
The Home page belongs to the Home button. Startup behavior is a separate setting in Settings and more (…) → Settings → Start, home, and new tab page. Configure both if you want them to open the same address.
Where did the “On startup” setting go in Edge?
Microsoft’s newer support pages place startup controls in Start, home, and new tab page. Some older documentation still calls the area On startup. Use the combined section or open edge://settings/startHomeNTP.
Can I make every new tab open a specific website?
The built-in New Tab page settings control Microsoft’s layout and content, not a general custom URL field. An extension may replace New Tab with a specific website, but review its permissions and reputation carefully before installing it.

What should I do if an extension says “managed by your organization” on my personal PC?
Check edge://policy and run a full Microsoft Defender or reputable antivirus scan. The extension may be unwanted software. Do not remove registry policies casually; they can affect all Edge policies and registry editing can damage Windows if done incorrectly.

Use Start, home, and new tab page for the Home button and startup behavior. Use the Settings control on a new tab for layout and feed content. If the page keeps changing, inspect edge://extensions and edge://policy before changing the setting repeatedly—an extension or enforced policy is often the real cause.
