Windows 11 provides several ways to get help, but the right route depends on the problem. Use taskbar Search for a quick answer, the Get Help app for guided diagnostics and support requests, Settings for a problem-specific help link, and Microsoft’s support website for detailed repair instructions.
This guide explains where each option is located, which built-in troubleshooters are available, and what to do when common problems—especially Windows Update failures—need more than a basic search.
Choose the right Windows 11 help option
| What you need | Best option | How to open it |
|---|---|---|
| A quick explanation or setting | Taskbar Search | Enter a question or keywords in the taskbar Search box |
| Guided diagnostic tests | Get Help troubleshooters | Start > type get help > select Get Help |
| Help with the setting currently open | Settings’ Get help link | Open the relevant page in Settings and select Get help, when available |
| Detailed repair instructions | Microsoft Support | Visit support.microsoft.com/windows |
| Personalized assistance or a support request | Get Help support request | Open Get Help and sign in with a Microsoft account |
1. Use Windows Search for a fast answer
For straightforward questions, select the Search box on the taskbar and enter a description such as:
- how to connect Bluetooth headphones
- printer not working
- change display brightness
- Windows Update error 0x800f0922
Windows Search can return installed apps, files, Settings pages, and web-based help. Use specific terms rather than a vague search such as “computer broken.” Including the device or feature name and any error code usually produces more useful results.

Search is also a quick way to open support tools. Type get help and select the Get Help app from the results.
2. Open the Get Help app
- Select Start.
- Type get help.
- Select Get Help from the results.
Get Help combines Microsoft’s support articles, guided troubleshooting, diagnostics, and—where available—support-request options. You can generally open the app without immediately submitting a request. To use the supported account-based experience and submit a support request, sign in with either a Microsoft personal account or a Microsoft work or school account.
Describe the issue in ordinary language, but include useful details: the affected device, what you were doing, when the problem began, and any displayed error code. For example, “Windows 11 downloads updates but fails during installation with error 0x8007000d” is more actionable than “updates do not work.”
3. Start help from Settings
Some Windows 11 Settings pages display a Get help link. When it appears, select it to see information relevant to the setting you are viewing and possible solutions.

Find the relevant troubleshooter and select Run. Do not use the Windows 10 path Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters; Windows 11 uses System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
4. Run a Get Help troubleshooter
Get Help troubleshooters run diagnostic checks against system configuration and then present findings and suggested remedies. Microsoft’s documented search phrases include the following:
| Problem | Search phrase in Get Help | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Sound or microphone | audio troubleshooter | If asked to allow diagnostics, select Yes |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth troubleshooter | Follow the diagnostic prompts |
| Camera | camera troubleshooter | Run the suggested checks |
| Internet connection | connect to network and internet | Select Run network diagnostics |
| Printer | printer troubleshooter | Allow the tool to scan for printers and configuration problems |
| Windows Update | windows update troubleshooter | Run the automated update checks and fixes |

| Video playback | Video playback troubleshooter | Run the available checks |
| Windows Media Player | Windows Media Player troubleshooter | Follow the guided steps |
| Background downloads | Background Intelligent Transfer Service troubleshooter | Run the diagnostic tool |
Get Help also includes troubleshooters for Microsoft 365, Classic Outlook, Classic Teams, and Copilot. If a troubleshooter resolves the problem, close Get Help and continue working. If it reports that no automatic fix is available, use its findings to choose the next repair step rather than repeatedly running the same tool.
5. Get help with Windows Update
Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help. Before troubleshooting, back up important personal files. Microsoft says Microsoft-account users’ system settings are automatically restored after updating once the device is connected to the internet. Then work through these checks:
- Verify the connection: Select Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi. Reconnect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if the computer is offline.
- Run the troubleshooter: Open Get Help and search for windows update troubleshooter.
- Check manually: Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Complete the restart: If an update is waiting, select Start > Power > Update and restart or Update and shut down.
Reset the Windows Update cache
To reset the Windows Update cache, stop the Windows Update service, delete the cached files, and start the service again:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
- Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the parent folder itself.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If Windows refuses to delete an item, the service may not have stopped completely. Restart Windows and try the procedure again before deleting anything.

Match common update errors to likely causes
| Error | Microsoft-identified possibilities | Useful first action |
|---|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Windows Update files or the update cache may be corrupted | Run the troubleshooter and consider resetting the cache |
| 0x800705b4 | The update took too long or was interrupted | Run the update again |
| 0x80240034 | An incomplete update or connection problem | Check the network and run Windows Update troubleshooting |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient space, .NET Framework, or another component problem | Free storage, try disabling a VPN, and retry |
| 0x80070057 or 0x80080005 | Corruption, permission issues, or incorrect configuration | Run the update troubleshooter and system repair checks |
| 0x80070422 | The Windows Update service is disabled or stopped | Set the service to Automatic and start it |
| 0x8007000E | Insufficient disk space is one possible cause | Free space, try disabling a VPN, and retry |
For an upgrade, Microsoft lists at least 16 GB free on a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB free on a 64-bit operating system. More free space is preferable because Windows also needs room for temporary installation files.
Correct a disabled Windows Update service
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply > OK, then check for updates again.
6. Repair damaged Windows system files
If update errors or other Windows features suggest file corruption, Microsoft documents running System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run sfc/scannow.
Allow the scan to finish. Do not close the Command Prompt while it is checking system files. The result will indicate whether Windows found and repaired corrupted files or could not repair some of them.
7. Use Microsoft’s Windows help website

8. Know which older help tools are obsolete
Do not spend time looking for Microsoft Easy Fix or the old Microsoft Fix it downloads. Microsoft discontinued Easy Fix and no longer provides it for download. Its functions were replaced by built-in Windows troubleshooters, Get Help’s guided troubleshooting, and fixes delivered through Windows updates.
The Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant has also been replaced by troubleshooters integrated into Get Help. Microsoft is retiring the legacy Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT) and older inbox troubleshooters. Microsoft’s estimated timeline described redirection beginning in 2023, remaining redirection or removal planned for 2024, and MSDT removal planned for 2025. Microsoft also says exact release timing was to be determined, so those dates should not be treated as a guarantee that every PC changed on the same day.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Legacy tools listed for removal from newer Windows 11 releases include Hardware and Devices, Keyboard, Power, Search and Indexing, Speech, System Maintenance, Shared Folders, Windows Store Apps, Devices and Printers, and several Internet Explorer and workplace-connection troubleshooters. If an old guide tells you to open one of these tools, use the corresponding Get Help troubleshooter or Microsoft Support page instead.
9. Prepare useful information before contacting support
If self-service troubleshooting does not solve the problem, collect these details before submitting a request:
- The exact Windows version and whether the PC is Windows 11 or an unsupported older release
- The feature or device affected
- The date the problem started
- The exact error code and wording
- What changed immediately beforehand, such as an update, driver installation, or new application
- Steps that reproduce the problem
- Troubleshooters or commands already run and their results
This prevents support from repeating basic checks and makes it easier to identify whether the issue is caused by Windows, a device driver, a network, an account, or third-party software.

Microsoft lists October 14, 2025 as the end-of-support date for Windows 10. After support ends, an unsupported Windows version does not receive Microsoft technical support, software updates, security updates, or fixes. If you are still using Windows 10, check your upgrade eligibility and plan accordingly rather than assuming every Windows 11 help instruction will apply unchanged.
