It still works in Windows 11; use Settings for current tasks such as renaming adapters, viewing IP details, changing network profiles, and resetting the network.
Some controls in Network Connections are subject to account permissions and organization policies. The steps below cover the main uses and explain what to try if an option is unavailable.
What is the ncpa.cpl command?
ncpa.cpl is a Windows command that opens the Control Panel Network Connections folder. The folder lists the computer’s network connections, including physical Ethernet and Wi-Fi adapters, VPN connections, and virtual adapters.
It is useful when you need the classic connection properties dialog or legacy controls. Windows 11’s Settings app handles many networking tasks, but the Network Connections folder and its menus remain available.

Open TCP/IP settings with ncpa.cpl
Use this route to reach the classic IPv4 and IPv6 configuration dialogs:
- Run
ncpa.cpl. - Right-click the relevant connection and select Properties.
- Under Components checked are used by this connection, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Select Properties.
- Select Advanced.
For a remote-access connection, select its Networking tab before choosing Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Advanced. Change IP settings only when you know the values required for your network.

- Press Windows key + R, enter
ncpa.cpl, and select OK. - Press Alt.
- Select Advanced.
- Select Advanced Settings.
If Advanced Settings is missing, account permissions or an administrator policy may restrict access. Nonadministrators are normally prohibited from opening this dialog.
Rename a network adapter
In Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025, the Control Panel right-click rename command is affected by an elevation-prompt bug. Microsoft marks the issue as won’t-fix because the functionality moved to Settings.
Preferred method: Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
- Locate the adapter and use the available rename control.
Control Panel workaround
- Run
ncpa.cpl. - Select the adapter.
- Select the Rename this connection button.
Use the button rather than the broken right-click Rename command.

Modern alternatives to ncpa.cpl
For routine networking tasks in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Network & internet. You can also right-click the taskbar Network, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi icon and select Network and internet settings.
To find your IP address, open Network & internet > Wi-Fi > [connected Wi-Fi network] for wireless, or Network & internet > Ethernet for a wired connection. The IPv4 address appears next to IPv4 address.
To change a network profile, open the applicable Wi-Fi or Ethernet network page. Under Network profile type, choose Public network (Recommended) or Private network. Use Private only on a network you trust.
Windows 11’s modern IP-settings interface includes DNS over HTTPS; this option is not available in Windows 10’s documented Edit IP settings interface.

How to reset network settings
Network reset is a troubleshooting measure. It removes installed network adapters and their settings; after restart, Windows reinstalls the adapters with default settings. You may need to reinstall or reconfigure VPN software, Hyper-V virtual switches, and other network-virtualization software. Reset can also change known connections to the Public network profile.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Network & internet.
- Select Advanced network settings.
- Select Network reset.
- Select Reset now, then select Yes.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Network & internet.
- Select Status.
- Select Network reset.
- Select Reset now, then select Yes.
Why a Network Connections option may be unavailable
If a button or menu item is absent, a policy or permission may be restricting it. Microsoft documents policies that can disable the connection Properties menu, the Advanced button in TCP/IP properties, the Advanced Settings menu item, or controls for enabling and disabling LAN connection components.
Nonadministrators are prohibited from accessing advanced TCP/IP configuration for a LAN connection, except members of the Network Configuration Operators group. They are also normally prohibited from the Advanced Settings dialog. A policy can disable the TCP/IP Advanced button for all users, including administrators, when the relevant administrator-prohibition policy is also enabled.
If a policy changes from Enabled to Not Configured, the TCP/IP Advanced button may not return until the user signs out and back in. Microsoft’s documented policy settings cover specified Windows 10 versions and Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions.
