Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOn most Logitech keyboards designed for Windows, the Windows key is on the bottom row, immediately to the left of Alt. Logitech may label it Start, print the Windows logo, or share the key with an Apple label such as Option/Start. The Start label and key position are more reliable clues than the logo alone.
A typical left side of the keyboard looks like this:
Ctrl → Fn → Start/Option → Alt/Command → Spacebar
On a dual-labeled key, use the Start side when the keyboard is connected to a Windows PC.

Quick way to identify the Windows key
- Look along the keyboard’s bottom row.
- Find the key immediately to the left of Alt.
- Look for Start, a Windows logo, or a split label containing Start.
- Press the key by itself. In Windows, the correct key opens or closes the Start menu.
If nothing happens, the key may be assigned to another operating system, the keyboard may be connected to the wrong Easy-Switch channel, or the key may have been remapped.
Where the Windows key is on popular Logitech keyboards
| Keyboard | Where to look | What the key may say |
|---|---|---|
| Logitech MX Keys | Bottom row, immediately left of Alt | Start, Option/Start, or a Windows symbol |
| Logitech K850 Performance | Between Fn and Alt on the bottom row | Start |
| Logitech K780 | The bottom-row modifier key with the Windows-side legend | Start, usually paired with an Apple modifier label |
| Other Windows-compatible Logitech models | Usually immediately left of Alt | Start, Windows logo, or a dual Windows/Apple label |
The K850 Performance is also included in the MK850 keyboard-and-mouse combination, so the same key location applies to that keyboard.
Finding it on the Logitech MX Keys
On the MX Keys, check the bottom-left section of the keyboard. The Windows key is normally the key directly before Alt. Depending on the physical version and regional layout, the key can be marked Start, Option/Start, or with the Windows logo.
Do not assume that the key labeled Option is exclusively for a Mac. On a multi-OS MX Keys layout, a key can have both Apple and Windows functions. When the keyboard is operating with Windows, use the Windows-side marking—typically Start.
Finding it on the Logitech K850 Performance
The K850 has a clearer Windows-oriented label: its Windows key is marked Start. On the bottom row, it is normally positioned between Fn and Alt:
Ctrl → Fn → Start → Alt → Spacebar
Press Start alone to open the Windows Start menu. If you are using the K850 from an MK850 bundle, there is no separate Windows key hidden elsewhere on the keyboard; use this same Start key.

Finding it on the Logitech K780
The K780 uses split labels for several modifier keys. The Windows-side label is Start, while the other side of the split is intended for Apple devices. Logitech’s K780 guide explains that the label above the split is sent to Windows or Android, and the label below the split is sent to Apple computers, iPhone, or iPad.
Therefore, on a Windows PC, identify the bottom-row key containing Start and use it as the Windows key. It may not display the familiar Windows logo.
Set the K780 to its Windows layout when necessary
If the K780 is connected through a receiver or another connection that does not automatically select the operating system, hold Fn + P for three seconds. The LED for the selected Easy-Switch channel lights to confirm the layout. Logitech documents these corresponding commands:
- Fn + P for Windows or Android
- Fn + I for iOS
- Fn + O for macOS
There is an important exception: when the K780 is connected using Bluetooth Smart, Logitech says manual OS-layout selection is not necessary. OS Detection configures the keyboard automatically.
How to test that you found the right key
Press the suspected Start, Win, Windows-logo, or Option/Start key by itself. It should open or close the Windows Start menu, as described in Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcut reference.
You can also test it with these Windows shortcuts:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Windows | Open or close Start |
| Windows + E | Open File Explorer |
| Windows + I | Open Settings |
| Windows + L | Lock the computer |
| Windows + R | Open the Run dialog |
| Windows + V | Open clipboard history |
| Windows + Tab | Open Task View |
| Windows + C | Open Microsoft Copilot or Microsoft 365 Copilot, depending on availability and configuration |
Clipboard history must be enabled before Windows + V can display it. In Windows 11, go to Settings → System → Clipboard and turn on Clipboard history.

What to do when the Start key does not work
1. Select the Windows computer’s Easy-Switch channel
Many Logitech multi-device keyboards can pair with up to three devices. If the active channel is connected to a Mac, tablet, or another computer, the key will not control the Windows PC. Press the numbered Easy-Switch button assigned to your Windows PC, then test the Start key again. For more on this failure mode, see TechYorker’s Logitech keyboard guide.
2. Check the keyboard’s operating-system layout
On a multi-OS keyboard, the same physical key can behave as Option on macOS and Start/Windows on Windows. For the K780, hold Fn + P for three seconds to select the Windows/Android layout. Use Fn + O for the macOS/iOS layout.
Do not treat Fn + P as a universal Logitech shortcut. Logitech specifically documents it for the K780; behavior differs between models.
3. Check PowerToys Keyboard Manager
Microsoft PowerToys can change or disable individual keys and shortcuts. Open PowerToys Settings → Keyboard Manager → Remap a key or Remap a shortcut.
In the remapping window, choose the physical key under Select and set To send to ⊞ Win. Select OK to apply the change. A restart is not required. See Microsoft’s PowerToys Keyboard Manager documentation.

PowerToys must remain running in the background, and Keyboard Manager must be enabled, for the remapping to continue working. Closing PowerToys or disabling Keyboard Manager stops the remapping.
There are some limitations:
- Windows + L and Ctrl + Alt + Del cannot be remapped because Windows reserves them.
- The Fn key generally cannot be remapped.
- Keyboard Manager does not operate on password or Windows sign-in screens.
Microsoft documents that new PowerToys installations beginning with version 0.100 open the redesigned WinUI 3 editor by default. Keyboard Manager settings include an option to switch between the new and legacy editors.

Common misunderstandings
“The Windows key must have a Windows logo.”
Not necessarily. Logitech often prints Start or uses a split label such as Option/Start. Position and the Windows-side legend are better clues than the logo.
“Every Logitech keyboard uses Fn + P for Windows mode.”
No. That is an officially documented K780 command, not a universal Logitech shortcut. Check the instructions for the exact keyboard model before using an OS-layout combination.
“The K780 always has to be manually switched to Windows.”
Not when it is connected using Bluetooth Smart. Logitech says the K780 can detect the operating system automatically over that connection. Manual selection may still be relevant with other connection methods or when the layout is incorrect.

The Windows key is a modifier, so press it together with another key for Windows shortcuts. The K780’s shortcut and media symbols work differently: to invoke an associated function or media action, hold Fn while pressing the relevant key. This behavior is separate from identifying the Start/Windows key. See Logitech’s K780 shortcut and media keys guide.
